Watch the drama unfold as the first owlet fully leaves the nesting box to the perch. While on the perch, the owlet is greeted by the mother barred owl, Tootsie. The little owlet soaks it all in and sits on the perch for a while, allowing for ample time to stretch his wings. He eventually jumps to the top of the box (briefly disappears out of frame) before jumping down to the tree stump behind the box (appears to barely make it!). Of note, the nesting box and stump are about 30 ft high. While on the stump he gathers courage and eventually jumps to the Cryptomeria evergreen, and you can see the branches shaking as he is making his way to inner part of the tree. Stick around until the end of the video to see Tootsie fly to the stump to watch over her young little owlet fledgling.

*******************************
Two Barred owls, affectionately named "Tootsie & Pops" have been in our backyard and neighborhood for the past few years. The nesting box was built 2022/2023 and hung on the tree. Unfortunately, it must not have been high enough as they did not seem interested and they roosted in a neighbor's yard. During the summer of 2023, while we had an arborist on site for various projects, we had him raise the box to it's new location. The owls have quickly taken residence since January 2024.
There is a nest box camera inside providing IR light; however, a squirrel must have chewed the wire because it cannot seem to broadcast any picture. A second camera has been mounted to a neighboring tree to provide the comings and goings throughout the night. Enjoy!
