I've done a decent bit of backpacking and a few weeks of mountaineering, but I really wanna work on my rock climbing skills so I can pursue routes like this. Any advice on how to hone these skills other than practicing on easier stuff and in the gym and working my way up? Any books or classes you found particularly helpful? Awesome vid as usual 👍

Greg, I’ve worked as a rock climbing guide for the past 3 summers now and... although I may be a bit partial... I really think that getting a day or two out on ropes with a guide is the best way to get experience. I really wish that I would’ve done that when I was first learning. Climbing with a guide a few times and learning the necessary skills whilst under the supervision of a professional will give you the confidence and abilities that provide the framework for a good climbing career. Although, in terms of books and such, Falcon Guides “The Mountain Guide Manual” has been very helpful in terms of technical skills for climbing and mountaineering. In terms of actual rock climbing skill and physical fitness, there is no better place to hone your physical ability than in a gym. Build your climbing skill like a pyramid. The most amount of your climbing should be easier, moderate climbs, while the least amount of your climbing should be at your physical limit. The best way that I’ve learned to progress is just a massive amount of mileage on moderate terrain. The mind is really the most important part of a climber for 99% of climbs. Fitness comes after.... but then again... maybe that’s why I can’t climb 5.13 😉
