I had a German mother and American father. As a little child I learned my first words from both languages, and my parents were surprised that I did not mix the languages together at all. This, I believe, is typical because the words are learned in context. At first we do not distinguish separate words but we hear a river of sound. Some go together and others do not. A little one like Agatha is at the prime age when learning to be bilingual would be natural and much easier for her than learning any language later in school. You and she would not regret if you included some conversations with her in both languages. You could, for example, point to her nose and say, "This is your nose" in England and in Russian. She will soon be able to point to her nose when you ask "Where is your nose?" in either language. Thank you for sharing your life in this way! The best way to know another country is to learn about individual people and how they live.

From a speech language therapist - when learning a language as a baby a specific language should be spoken by 1 role model (e.g the mother) all the time. Changing the code from one sentence to the next hinders solid language development. It is however not a problem when a very young child is exposed to 2 languages simultaneously. For example, dad speaks Russian all the the time, mom speaks English all the time. So one role model, one language.
@Wloczykij19822 жыл бұрын
Should and should. Me and my partner are both Polish living in Denmark. We spoke only Polish to our kids before they entered kindergarten so they have a base of Polish. Later we changed to mixed using both languages so when a kid wanted to hear us reading a book in Danish we did it 30 minutes later if they wanted to hear a book in Polish we did it. We both changed using languages several times during the day depending on the situation. If people comes around speaking Danish we speak Danish so everyone understands everything if we call grandparents we shift to Polish 100% for obvious reasons. Our kids were exposed to shifting languages from both parents many times a day and our daughter is now 7 grade she is best in her class in Danish and English even though we never spoke or teach her English and even that English is easier to Danish kids than to Polish kids since it is the same language family. My daughter brain for languages is like a sponge still and she is learning German and curious about French. So I don't agree with you that one language should be spoken by one parent and another language by another parent. Don't agree at all.
@spraakborrel68332 жыл бұрын
@@Wloczykij1982 Thank you for this well thought through reply. The one language really applies in YOUNG children busy acquiring their first language. The idea is that when a child is exposed to 2 languages between 0-3 years, the adult speakers should stick to one language. When a very young child is learning his first language, he certainly can be exposed to different languages, but, 1 model 1 language is the preferred way to go. Of course, when the 2 languages are well established, there is absolutely no reason for exposure to even more languages. It is all about establishing those first languages between 0-3 years.
@Wloczykij19822 жыл бұрын
@@spraakborrel6833 both our kids before kindergarten from the age of 9 months were exposed to 100 % Danish at prekindergarten 10 hrs a day and than mostly Polish at home until they went to kindergarten when it went bit more in favor of Danish because it was the language they hear everyday outside home. I still mix languages not in the same sentence but when I want to emphasize something I do it in both languages for : 1. Making sure they do understand what I mean even if they may lack some vocabulary 2. Learn and train how the same concept is called in both languages. As you can see - both my kids were exposed to mixing two different languages everyday and they really have no problem with those languages at all. They are perceived Danish here in Denmark and Polish in Poland and no other kids ever think about them as being "foreign" in any manner. Furthermore their brains seem to have now an upper hand while learning new languages ( as well as "feeling" music) compared of native colleagues at kindergarten/ school. In my teen years I was exposed to Russian, English Latin and French and later on to Danish besides my mother tongue and I always had the feeling that I was faster picking up the grammar rules and the sounds of new languages. Furthermore I now a American-German couple who are speaking both English German and Danish to their daughters and the kids are just shifting the languages without even noticing it.

I love how you like studying, even if it may not serve any specific purpose. I'm also a person who likes to study and accomplish goals. But I do believe that any studying enriches our mind and perspective, so it will always have some practicality at least 😊

a little bit late but i love your channel and i liked this video! it's so interesting; i feel like in the usa we rarely hear/see anything about russia FROM russian people... it's nice to know you're just like us! i cannot wait to see your channel grow!

Agree, first real video I have found. Have enjoyed others but from very remote areas no chatter, but watching how meals are cooked.

Really appreciate the openness and honesty. Russians generally dont come across as most “friendly” at least on the outside but you seem very personable and smart. Especially considering you are only 22-23 years old, you seem very mature for your age. Anyways great job! keep up the good work

I really like the way that you can freely say that you don't enjoy something and that it just isn't for you, even when it's very common for others to do it.

Definitely speak to your daughter in English starting now. It is so much easier for her to learn as a baby than even you as an eight year old. She'll pick it up so fast, and then when you guys start classes for her she'll progress very quickly. I am fluent in three languages because my family spoke to me in all three since birth. I am trying to learn language #4 as an adult and it is harder. Also, I completely understand about university. I am smart and I love learning so much but I really didn't enjoy university (and I went in Canada). I only finished so that I could finish but I was mighty glad to be able to move on with my life. I don't know what I was expecting with uni but it wasn't what I got. (I am not from Canada, so I know one problem was that the transition to a new country was very difficult for me.)

Hello from America! I just found your channel and have enjoyed it so much. My husband and I were short term missionaries in Russia in 1999 and 2000. We went there to put on summer camps and work with orphans. We met our daughter there and adopted her in 2001. Your channel has taken me back there in spirit even though we can't return in person right now. I found it especially interesting that you honed your English skills at missionary summer camps.

I am so glad I found your videos. I started down sizing a few years ago. I have gotten rid of a lot of things. After listening to your 20 things you don’t buy anymore ... you have inspired me to get rid of more things.

I very rarely comment on any video but I feel that I have to do on this one. Most of the videos I watch although they look nice and mostly enjoyable, they feel a bit distant from me. This one makes me feel that you are the couple living just next door to me. I thank you for this feeling. "Agatha" is an ancient Greek work and it means something nice, good and innocent. Greetings and blessings from Athens :) Thank you!

I'm very impressed with your channel. Your English is remarkable for not having lived or visited an English speaking country. I would encourage you to teach your children another language besides Russian. It is so much easier when you are young. I spoke fluent Japanese when I was 4 years old, but lost it all when I moved to the USA. I so wish now as an adult that I had kept up with another language. Laus Deo, Wayne from Issaquah WA

I'm completely in love with your channel and you, Vika!😍 You are such a lovely person, and I find your content very inspirational and important. It think the key to a more sustainable life is to critically assess what you really need vs. want and separate these two. And at the same time it is very important to try to find a happy mindset in the midst of the overconsuming surroundings, that tries to get also you to consume more. It is not always easy, and this is exactly what you are doing! Simply great! It is all about the mindset. Keep up the great work! Lot's of love from Helsinki, Finland❤

I just came upon you snd subscribed immediately. Even though I have several children; one of whom is your age. I just felt you and I have a lot in common even though I am old enough to be your mom. I am older than my husband by 17 years, so i relate to being judged for this reason as well as many other reasons. You have a beautiful soul reflected in your beautiful family. Thank you for sharing your life with us! Blessings upon you and all you do always! Light and love from Texas💐

I think you are right to speak only Russian with Agatha. I feel strongly that parents should speak their native language with their children and try to ensure that their native language is as good as possible with lots of reading in that language so that when they learn a second language they have a strong hook for the new language. This is what we are trying to do with our Slovak-English bilingual daughter and I’ve seen it play out well for my nephews who are bilingual in Welsh and English. I teach a lot of bi and multi-lingual children and I think that as long as you support her Russian and also her education, as your parents obviously did, she will do well 👍🏻

I was taught a different concept of Russia. Mostly because my family left Cuba in the 1960's. During Cold war era. It's refreshing to see how much we all have in common. I love your videos. It's a good learning experience to learn about another culture. In the USA minimalist usually do tiny house living also van life. Usually these homes are movable and self sustaining.

Definitely teach Agatha English. I easily learned two languages at the same time as a kid and now as an adult it's an advantage in many ways. It's a plus when it comes to applying for jobs as well as being able to meet and speak with more people from a variety of areas and cultures. I didn't study linguistics or child development but from everything I've read and heard, it's much easier to learn languages as a child.

Research has shown children are "sponges" from 0-3. That is the developmental phase or "window" of opportunity humanity really misses out on. It'll be in Agatha's "best" interest and investment in a future with many doors and opportunities.

Maybe it could be something like reading children’s books in English or watching English language cartoons :) starting with that could help! I’m sure people could give you ideas of classic English- language books (I do this for my friends overseas teaching their children English!)

I’m Australian & lived over seas for several years. I worked with a South African & when her children were born she spoke both Afrikaans & English to them. Interestingly when I visited the kids aged 2&4 would just speak English to me. It was just like they new. My point being it’s easier for kids to learn bilingually from the start. 😊🇦🇺

My family moved to the US from Mexico when I was nine years old and I’m fluent in Spanish and English. My sister and I spoke Spanish at home and English only in school or when we went out. I now live in Mexico with my husband and I have friends who only speak English at home to their kids and Spanish only outside their home and their kids are bi-lingual.

As someone that returned to studying for a MA in my mid 30s (married for 5 years), I want to say you should study abroad if you get the chance. Your English is very good and you could totally get a Graduate Student Assistant or Teaching/Research Assistant scholarship at an American university which could possibly cover all tuition and even provide a stipend for living costs. Particularly, some Christian universities have very good programs for foreign students that need financial support and family support (Food and medical support for child + Free English classes for wife, etc.). Family doesn't have to be a burden. My wife supported my studies and although we're going through our savings a little, it's worth it.
