It used to be my least favourite Monkeys album, though I have been warming to it lately. Still, WPSIATWIN and FWN > the rest of their work. Though that's not an insult to the other albums, it's a compliment to the first two. Imo, the arctic monkeys don't have a bad album.

I went to university in Sheffield where the Arctic Monkeys come from. The whole album is very connected with the city, and is still huge amongst the student population. Went to a gig where a brass band played this album in full. Instead of anyone in the band singing, the whole 1500 person crowd sung every line together. Insane gig!

But then Arctic Monkeys came along with this! i'm not forgetting The Sex Pistols, but they are in a category all to themselves that being most important band and album. seriously, try and imagine what music would have been like last 40+ years if they hadn't happened. so many kids that wouldn't have ever bothered picking up and playing an instrument that they "couldn't play".

Another great thing about the album is the story it tells in the first half. Alex turner takes the piss on night life and clubbing with great dark humor through different stories that we can all probably relate to from experience that we have had ourselves partying. Pay attention to the lyrics on the view from the afternoon (about meeting up with your friends, preparing for the party and hyped up with unrealistic expectations of the outcome) and Fake tells of San Francisco (talking about guys approaching girls and making up cool stories just to get laid. Something we have all done at some point hhehehe).

As a huge arctic monkeys fan and musician myself I have to say that their debut feels MUCH more technically proficient than a lot of the later material. Some songs off the debut i struggled to learn for much longer than stuff off of say Humbug or AM. I’m not sure why there is a drop in the technicality for the instruments playing after the debut but having attempted to play a lot of Arctic Monkeys their debut is very technical compared to the rest and I think that shines through with the music from the album. The garage rock vibes are endless 🤙🏼

Holy shit Brad. You are liking Arctic monkeys finally. I enjoyed this Soo much, my heart was racing I was in awe and relief that you were liking the songs as much as I do. So this is what them girls felt when you liked trench! I'm sure that you will like the rest of the album, you will probably like favorite worst nightmare (next album) as well, it keeps a similar energy with some new elements. I hope you keep going through the Arctic monkeys discography, tho I'm pretty sure you will dislike the fourth and fifth album. But im still soo hyped that you liked this one. I don't know if you are into live performances but this songs live in a show with a great crowd are incredible. A great example is from Ritz to ruble (probably my favorite song of the album) in trnsmt festival a year or two ago, the crowd sings everything at the top of their lungs and the band plays as fast and as heavy as they did 15 years ago. I can't wait for the next video men, everything was on point and that was Tina's best cameo yet. Keep up the good work brad, and take care my dude

I accidentally stumbled upon "beneath the boardwalk" demo, one night in late 2005, on a file-sharing forum, months before the release of "Whatever People Say I Am...", before anyone I know (or anyone outside English indie-club scene, for that matter) ever heard about the Monkeys. .... I have never fallen in love with a band more quickly. All it took was a first couple of seconds of "A Certain Romance".

I miss the Arctics. They were so tight, creative, and energetic in their early days. Oh, the rifts, solos, wordplay! Helders was an absolute beast drummer! They lost that gang of 4 vibe after about the 3rd album and they were spread all over the world. Alex stopped writing interesting stories I guess when he moved to Hollywood and just became about coke and models. I listened to this album so many times I wouldn't even want to guess and tried to learn all the songs on guitar. Their last album I labored to get thru once. AM showed they still can make great music. They are so talented I hope they come back guns a blazing!

This was my childhood. In the UK we were given free tracks by AM online before their album. I remember proudly playing a AM track at school when I was 12 - we had a teacher who used to play music during the lesson. Them and Kaiser Chiefs were massive! I liked AM's first two albums but haven't liked any others; it is not the same sound and audience. That is okay - just not for me.
