Chase: *pause* "Wow. Yeah. Tell me music can't save lives... and I will show you this." *unpause" Ren: "So cower at the man I've become when I sing from the top of my lungs. That I won't retire, or stand in your fire, inspire the meek to be strong" I don't think I've seen a comment during a reaction be as on point as quickly as that before.

What a great reaction and commentary. I just subscribed to your channel. “Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 5 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of his songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern bard. His trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" is haunting and has an unforeseen conclusion. It needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline. It is another example of Ren’s genius and a master’s class in storytelling. It has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice while addressing mental health. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).” As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. Then there are his performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the moon/No Diggity”), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”), which are all great. Ren's performances as a member of the band "The Big Push" (which unfortunately broke up), their busking (street performances), concerts, and their live recordings, are awesome and well worth checking out. Ren's covers of "I Shot the Sheriff," "Wade in the Water," "An Englishman in New York," “War Pigs,” the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Watch Out," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. Ren recently released his single, “Sick Boi.” In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. As mentioned above, his latest release, “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” is another masterful work.

I dont know if im crazy but there a few things id like to point out from my view. 1. The intro is DESIGNED to GRAB get your attention before the important story is told. 2. The outro being and updated version of the intro is decidely TRIUMPHANT in tone to help drag and uplift the listener out of the heaviness of the subject.

You know, one thing that always strikes me is how at the beginning of the song, the yodeling throws everyone off track, and they’re like, “what is this!?” And then when he picks it back up at the end, everyone smiles when they hear it…like they get it now. ❤

Ren is a Poet, a Singer, a Rapper, a Songwriter, a Composer, a Musician, an Actor......An ARTIST. There's NO ONE out there doing what Ren is doing right now. Add to that that this is a LIVE taping....No pre-recorded music and lip-syncing in this one. Just Ren, Sam (the videographer), Ren's Guitar and 3 cameras for the 3 different perspectives. Look closely and you'll see the Mic on the top of his gown as well as his guitar plugged in (remote pack).

He is also a film director, and creator. The Tales of Jenny, Screech and Violet were all followed by a series of social media posts that follow the story of Screech from the angle of him stealing Rens phone, he has collected all the clips in one short film, about 11 minutes. We learn a lot about Screeches back-story. Ren is a pure storyteller. He teaches empathy, a very important lesson for us all. Not one of us is innocent. We are all full of inner battles between our dark and light. The more we seek purity and one correct path, the more we alienate each other and judge, the harder we make life for those struggling. ❤️

You forgot genius of the highest level! He's a master. I am 57. I haven't seen his level of talent in my life. People have gotten close. But I believe he's in a class of his own. As a longtime poet and activist, who has been through my own long struggle with Lyme disease, I enjoyed your thoughtful reactions to this very poetic and psychologically insightful song and video. I appreciated how Ren showed--through words, terrific music, performance, and stagiing-- that one has to work through one's struggles to reach a well-earned state of hope. And once Ren is in that state of hope, he can stand, he can do his opera-like singing even through fast-blinking lights in the room, and he can even stand on one leg for a moment while doing that singing. And what nice and insightful spoken word piece at the end.
@Patriot_Drone_Services Жыл бұрын
This the first time I heard this. I didn’t get beyond the first minute or two of this video before writing this comment. It is absolutely brilliant. This is reminiscent of the theatrical production of “Pinball Wizard” all wrapped up in a 9 minute song with a single classical acoustic electric, and one man poetically playing two parts of this insane musical broadway play! Just wow, “brilliant” doesn’t even capture the essence of what Ren has done here. Crossing musical genres and theater and blending them in such a way to take the listener on a complete musical odyssey in the span of a 9 minute and change song! Bravo!!!!

Apparently this recording is a single take, and it only took 4 tries to get it. As someone who has struggled with mental health for most of my life, what he says here rings true. While he couches things in the language of music, the truth in what he is saying shines through. And the vulnerability he shows through this is incredibly brave. His ultimate message of self compassion is incredibly valuable. Anyone who has suffered from mental health problems knows full well that voice of self hate/doubt/negativity, and how poisonous and self sabotaging it can be. And unfortunately, the temptation is to try to fight against it rather than recognize, and accept that voice as just another side of yourself. Doing so can be, paradoxically, liberating. Sometimes what you need is to be able to let yourself fail, but not beat yourself up about it. Some days just suck, and that's ok. It's not about the days when you fail. It's about picking yourself up after. As long as you pick yourself up and keep going, that's what matters.

The lights are even brilliant themselves. In addition to flashing for the demon, and not flashing for Ren, he is sitting at slightly different angles, for left and right, so when Ren is speaking, his face is fully lit, but when the demon speaks, you can't see the face as well. This lets the animated nature of the demon come through, nearly in silhouette, and lets the more tender expressions of Ren come through as you can see right in to his eyes.

Thanks Chase! This is ART with one of the most POWERFUL messages I've seen delivered in a long time. I think this is one of the rare few videos and messages that deserve the hype and widest possible distribution. For the very reason you mentioned... It will save lives. The aria at the climax to the song is as uplifting as I've ever experienced. Different art/theme/concept than SHOEMAKER, but brought a similar response from me...tears of 'release'. SHOEMAKER released a thrill of emotion. HI REN released a spiritual awakening and a flood of tears, nearly sobbing, and alarming those around me. Powerful to the third degree. Thanks again

There's a lot more to Ren - he's a modern minstrel, a rapper, an amazing instrumentalist and singer. As far as I know, Ren was signed with Sony in the past, but they dropped him when he got severely chronically ill. He went through a medical odyssey of misdiagnoses. Right now, he's in Canada for treatment for lyme disease.
