After such a short distance, the spark plugs should be just about clean like they came out of the box, with just a hint of tan beginning to form on the porcelain. My Virago sounded similar when the plugs became too fouled. The plugs were completely black after 5 miles, and the the missing set in. Turned out it was failed O-rings that are not listed in any parts diagram, and not available as spare parts. When they fail, instead of mixing air into the needle jet, you get fuel. I am pretty sure the carbs on your XS1100 are designed differently, but if the main jet is bolted into a plastic pipe and the carb piston runs in a plastic guide, that could be the issue. However, it is more likely to you have an issue with float level or carb clogging or fuel supply or something else regarding the carbs. For instance, you will never be able to get CV carbs to work well without the airbox. You can get the engine to run OK eventually, but you will never get nearly as much horsepower as you will with the stock setup. Cycle World magazine did extensive testing on a GS1100, as did German magazine MOTORRAD, using dyno and CO2 emission testing, and there just was no was to get proper operation under all conditions. Inline fuel filters can also play havoc with fuel flow. But do not rule out a spark issue. A strobe timing lamp will only flicker if you have a spark going on inside the cylinder. If it breaks down or is erratic, you either have a defect spark plug or no energy reaching the spark plug.

I'm loving seeing all these new creators coming on the scene and bringing us classic machinery. I subbed to your channel. Have a Merry Christmas and keep on cranking out bangers.

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. Merry Christmas.

seems like timings off, might be hydrolocking the cylinder from not firing then it fires and fouls the plug slightly, that noise might be fuel igniting in the exhaust

Yeah, tuning the carbs would do you wonders, but i'm also wondering if your timing is advancing because its backfiring hard... Try setting your timing to a fixed angle and reving it with a ziming light hooked up to see if it stays put with rpm increase ...

On fixed timing it doesn’t waver and the timing is correct within a couple degrees.

Mine used to foul plugs all the time. Try cleaning the needle and seats and checking the float height is correct.

I rebuilt the carbs with new idle needles and visually the seats were clean, maybe I’ll give them another cleaning.
