Mountain Sledder was invited to throw a leg over the brand-new Ski-Doo Summit 850 E-TEC Turbo in some pretty ideal (deep snow) conditions at Carl Kuster Mountain Park shortly after the release. In this video, Mountain Sledder Editor Pat talks about his impressions of the new sled as he goes for a rip!

I notice a few videos say “it does much better than a stock sled.” It is stock. Factory turbo. It’s here and it’s glorious.

We're so ingrained with the idea of a "stock" sled being naturally-aspirated that it'll take some brain re-wiring to talk about it correctly! It's a new world!

When turbochargers were first added to over-the-road diesel engines waaay back in the day, they were simply known as "altitude compensators". They needed something to keep the power level in the mountains the same as it was closer to sea level. The P-38 Lightning developed before WW2, was rejected by the British with it's so-so power from simple supercharged Allison V12 engines. The addition of turbochargers helped greatly for take-offs with heavy munition loads, but really shined at high altitudes for bomber support. While turbo superchargers have taken center stage in performance circles, the vast majority of these devices are simply engineered into daily work-horse engines for emissions control...

What is cool is that machine as more power than average machines and does not as the unnecessary noice like many has that is how we get the public to hate snowmobiling thanks to present that nice quit machine

6' 3" the handlebar height feels very natural in a knees bend, athletic riding position.

Hey Sleddermag... where can I get that front bumper mount for my gopro like you have on the sled you're riding?

The lower part is a RAM Mount and the extension to keep the camera up out of the snow is a modified piece of 1" dowel from the hardware store! Hi-tech stuff! Thanks for watching!

Never really got into the turbo at full throttle. Burped the throttle around, a normal 850 would've done all of that especially a 175
@sleddermag
@sleddermag 4 жыл бұрын
Only on one short pull on-camera, yes, but we did ride it next to a 165" 850 all day, including sustained WOT pulls and the difference was obvious to all riders.

This way brp released this sled really pissed me off, I totally would have bought it if I hadn’t just taken delivery of my summitx expert two days before they announced the turbo, I woulda even been willing to forfeit my $500 spring check, oh well, hopefully Polaris responds with a sick 2021

Travis Jarvis it was very unethical of them to do this, they intentionally withheld what I consider our right as consumers, access to information about their product offerings in order to boost summitx expert sales numbers. They knew that if they announced both the summitx expert, and the turbo model simultaneously, and let us decide which model to purchase, they wouldn’t sell as many non-turbo models because most people in the market for a summitx expert, would much rather buy the turbo model. So it appears that they made sure most of the summitx sales numbers were locked down before announcing the turbo. Idk how most people feel but to me this sport is all about the stoke and I personally no longer feel stoked about my sled and don’t feel good about doing business with brp at all. They should have made the consumers aware of their choices and let us make the decision on what we wanted to buy. Not get us all locked into a heavily marketed flagship product only to announce a better version of it before we even have a chance to enjoy our new purchase. I was arguing with Dave Norona on his Instagram and he tried to counter my complaints by suggesting I follow suit as many others have and sell my brand new 2020 summitx expert and eat the trade-in loss in order to purchase the turbo. What kind of absurd logic is that, why would I want to sell a brand new sled at a loss so I can upgrade to a better model when I could have just purchased the turbo from the beginning had BRP not withheld their intentions. That makes no fucking sense. Another possible incentive for this method of product release timing might have been to line dealers’ pockets with the losses customers incur by trading in their brand new summitx at a loss, at which point the dealers would turn around and resell the used summitx at a higher price than what it was traded in for. So the dealer would get to sell the same sled twice and increase the profit margin of summitx experts off of customers who traded them in to upgrade to the turbo. Another possible motive for brp to release the turbo like this might simply be because they knew as a first gen model, the turbo might have a lot of issues that would be repaired under warranty and they simply didn’t want to sell that many units cause they’d take a loss on covering warranty work. Either way I feel duped and will never purchase another brp product. They just pushed a brand new brp customer straight into the arms of Polaris. My next sled will definitely not be a brp product, nor will I be adding all the upgrades to this summitx expert as I’d initially planned. On the other hand, had they given us the choice to buy the turbo from the beginning, I’d be flushing money down the toilet right now modifying the hell out of that sled.

Tyler Baldwin And why is that? Your Polaris can do any better? Oh wait that’s right they are five years behind in innovation as always. Or they are broke down on the trail 4 miles back. Not everything is about power moron get that through your head.
