One of the dry sump companies, Peterson, Moroso, CV Products, or Barnes had a dry sump pump pulley that had a one-way roller clutch in it that allowed you to spin the pump over with a drill to prime and prelube the engine without having to mess with the belt. It was a pretty cool idea. I think fairly recently someone came up with a remote oil filter housing with its own priming pump built in that used a ball-end hex in a drill, also pretty cool. I ran oil pressure accumulators on a couple drag cars in the past, that works too. With a solenoid, soon as the ignition is turned on it opens and prelubes the engine, the oil pump when running recharges it. It will also save you with a loss of oil pressure. Had a high 9 sec Nova that had an alky injected 383 SBC, bearings and everything looked brand new after 5 seasons on it.

Yeah, I'm with Tye that the metal is old debris from the 'mass exodus' as Steve called it. It's amazing how difficult it is to get all the metal shavings out of a block after a catastrophic failure, even with a parts washer. One of my buddies rebuilt a 400 SBC that had spun 3 rod bearings, and even after having the block honed and professionally cleaned, he had to put another set of bearings in it because a bunch of trash from the previous failure went through everything. It sucks but considering the other possibilities, it certainly isn't the worst outcome.

Just personally with our brad hemis running dry sump through a screen, we often find shavings in our oil, its never too concerning and for us just one of those race car things, if you start seeing chunks that'd be more concerning. Cant wait to see it at tx2k
@mfaulks206 Жыл бұрын
True, debris they have though is likely through the whole engine?
@mattyoconnor3784 Жыл бұрын
@M Faulks most likely, as long as it had a good clean to begin with, the small shavings shouldn't block any oil passages

For actual drag n drive, there's no way the current one is enough on pump gas! The 4-port return hose they did was a nice trick idea instead of a 4-1 manifold but that little wedge it has to flow through is too small anyway.

It doesn’t matter it he’s right or not. All those bearing are marked up in a $100,000 engine. If they didn’t have that sight glass the engine would’ve already been toast.

Every single engine build I've ever done, and every single new engine I've purchased, car/truck/small/tractor engines. All the same. Little bit of debris in the filter after run-in. I am meticulous about cleaning my engines during builds. I went in with gun cleaning brushes and cleared out all the oil passages on my last tractor engine build. Still a little bit of trash in the filter. Don't know where it always comes from, but it's always there. I just do a couple heat cycles now that I know this, drop the oil and change it right away after a new build. On something like this that had a catastrophic failure at one point, I'm not surprised you found some debris that worked itself loose. Keep an eye on it and if it keeps making more I'd be worried. I'd be surprised if that happened after you pulled all the caps and found nothing though. My guess is that you keep running it and it clears out and never comes back.

Moral of the story, when rebuilding a engine with any kind of breakage and metal shavings, clean, clean and clean again, anyone, even the best of the builders can miss it. It’s just part of the game.

I wonder when Cleetus McFarland was born standing in front of Sick Seconds 1.0 if he ever imagined he'd be using the same powerplant some day.

Sick Second 1.0 doesnt have an SMX, it has a conventional big block chevy that starts with a brodix block, very similar to what mullet used to have.

I have a hard time buying the trash in the engine theory from the prior rod incident. No way Steve would have not thoroughly cleaned the block thoroughly before reassembly. The other factor is that you are not reusing any of the oil system that the engine previously used where metal might have possibly hidden out. Lastly the engine ran fine during its dyno runs at Fuetech and at Sick Week prior to its tranny issues. Hopefully Steve will figure it out in TX. Hats off to everybody for noticing the issue right away and doing the responsible thing by pulling all the bearings.

@exotics4life618 Жыл бұрын
I think something is wrong. Dunno what exactly But, if the entire Cleetus team is bound & determined to force mullet & the SMX to compete at TX2X that engine will not survive the event. Just take more time, Slow down, skip TX2K an make sure mullet’s new motor is safe & happy before hurting it further.
@alanbell2156 Жыл бұрын
@Exotics 4 Life 100% they'll kill that engine. Some of the comments Cleetus comes away with are embarrassing. That bearing he showed was horrible.
@Spike-sk7ql Жыл бұрын
@@kwmikedI think he may have been meaning that Cleetus isn't using Steve's oiling system that he had when the rods went kaboom. I'm sure that Steve wasn't using that stuff during sick week either, but I don't know, but hey... at least that kind of makes sense.
@jeremyking5684 Жыл бұрын
Yep! More than likely trash came from all the oil lines and equipment that's on mullet ,from last engine that went out. I bet they didn't clean everything on that car before running it.
