First session with OXI Coral

I've been looking for something like OXI Coral for some time. It's bewildering to me that there aren't more modules (or desktop devices) that:
1. Are polyphonic over MIDI (or i2c)
2. Have a bunch of CV inputs for modulation
3. Have controls like a module, not a microvave
4. Fit in an Intellijel Palette
Anyway- more thoughts on this guy after I've gotten to use it a bit more. For now, I'll just leave you with one tip: buy it direct from OXI and save over $100 over retail.

First session with a few modules:
- OXI Coral: Oscillator
- XAOC Katowice: variable band isolator
- XOAC Minsk: stereo image processor
- ALM Pamela's Pro Workout: multifunction clock/modulation source
I used the string algo on Coral, ran it through Katowice with some automation to bring in the low/high bands, had Beads doing some pitched-up grains, and ran it all through Minsk with some modulation to the stereo image.
Not a particularly great demonstration of the poly-capabilities of the module but I'm not here to give demos.
One thing I was confused by is the envelope re-triggering behavior of Coral (maybe just the string voice) which you can hear at the end of the recording. I was playing a strummed chord first, then laying a sequence atop that. The chord would have a soft attack and the sequence would be a plucky, almost banjo-like sound. Kinda cool because it sounds almost like two distinct parts (something else Coral can do that I have yet to try).
I finally figured out that the plucky sound happens when retriggering a voice that has not completed its envelope. I know some envelopes have "digital" vs. "analog" retrigger behavior but I'm not sure exactly what is going on here.

Great video. Really enjoyed it. I think the release issue could be due to voice stealing. Try increasing the number of voices assigned to the part and see if that keeps the note playing through the release stage while the new note fires. hth.

Manuel from Oxi instruments is an amazing guy. Always close and very very innovative in everything he does. It is really amazing that he is able to take time to make and evolve such incredible products and to be able to kite surf in the sea. I love your videos … you know it :)

Yeah between my experience with this module and OXI One I couldn't agree more. I initially dismissed Coral as being just a Plaits clone with some extras, but this is much more than that. Reminds me of what Apple does: they are not the first to market, but they have a way of taking existing ideas and elevating them to a level that makes the rest of the industry play catch-up for some time.

I think it's a no-brainer for anyone using MIDI, but I think I'd already recommend it over the regular Plaits, even for folks using CV.
