Күн бұрын

Getting a late start but we finally made it out on our first snow run of the 2017-2018 snow season. Conditions were not the best, but we had to see what was going on. Went up to High Rock, Oregon, then down past Timothy Lake and Clackamas Lake Campground. Next up to Summit Lake and finally to a little spot I like to heat up a hot snack and listen to the football game. Oregon Cascades, USA - November 20th, 2017.

Yeah, good call tripjet999...trust me, I've heard it before. Sometimes in life you take a gamble...the goal is to minimize the risks. I always try to keep the Monster Jeep in tip-top shape and usually pack a little extra food. I know the area very well and in a worst case scenario I always bring along a set of snow shoes and a backpack in case I have to hike out. If you ask me, that would just add to the adventure... Trust me, it would take an awful lot of things to go wrong and some real bad luck for me to be found dead in these remote snow-packed hills. I ain't saying it can't happen, but I feel very comfortable on the snow in the woods. Thanks for watching...Happy Trails! :)

Good video. I would rather hear that engine and snow then music. I actually fall a sleep in the middle of video because of this music :D. Regarding being in the woods during winter nights I always pack air activated hand warmers and body warmers. It lasts about 8 hrs since you activate it and its very good in engine failure case to just keep you warm until the morning or if you have to hike more then one day back. Combine it with heat reflecting foil and you get lite and effective kit.

Hey Kris...thanks for the feedback. You're not the first person to mention background noise-vs-music. The main issue is that usually I'm listening to something on my SiriusXM satellite radio that creates a copyright problem. I have tried to blend things more and will continue to look for opportunities to provide more background noise. They're there, I just need to utilize them more...thanks for the reminder. :) And thanks for sharing the helpful survival tips...good information we could all use. Anyway Kris, "Till next time...Happy Trails. Thanks for watching!" :)

Hey Combine...Yeah, sometimes I get lazy and just sleep in the Jeep. I have to much stuff in the back, so the best set-up is a sleeping bag in the passenger seat with it kicked back. It usually results in about three - two hour naps. If I wake up or get cold, I'll just start the Jeep for about 10 minutes and warm it up. Thanks for watching! : )

I'd kind of question the mud terrain tires in snow, but I'd *totally* question wheeling alone (!!!) and with no spare tire to boot (you never know what's under the snow). Still, a cool video, and great scenery. It looks like lockers would have been helpful. I just bought my first Wrangler (JKUR) a few months ago. Have had it off road several times, but have not had a chance to try it in snow yet, but I can sure see how the slow and steady style works well in the deeper stuff. Thanks for that.

Right on Videos...I just go when I can, sometimes it's alone and sometimes it's with others. I just recently ditched the spare tire because of the weight, got tired of packing that thing around, but you're right, I should probably get a tire plug/patch kit. Thanks for watching! :)

Hey Michael, it's by Mictuning. Here's a link to it on Amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OC9HMTM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 As far as the brackets, they are just a standard bracket to hold a 50 inch light bar on a Jeep JK. The wire did not go under the bracket, but I ran it down along the inside edge of the bracket and zip tied it. As far as the antenna bracket, it slips under one of the bolts just inside under the hood and I added a couple of self-tapping metal screws to beef it up. Thanks for watching! :) Till next time...Happy Trails!

Right on Adam, I feel the same way. I would love to try a Goodyear Duratrack, but everyone runs mud tires in deep snow and they are expensive...so go with what you know. The BFG KM2's have done real well. I only aired down to 14 psi at this time because I new I would be traveling across bare ground along the way. Thanks for watching! :) Happy Trails!
@elburroadventures

Snow tires aren't designed to go through deep snow. They're designed for snow covered highways. Mud tires with deep treads and large blocks are the only way to go in deep snow as the tread clears quickly so the tires keep biting for traction. We do a lot of deep snow off roading in Montana. We air down to 3-5 lbs, we run lockers, and drive slow and steady to stay as much on top of the snow as possible.

Interesting. You reinforce the reason that using 4WD full-time is considered dangerous. You don't know how thin your margin is, pushing until it is too late. And you head downhill (off road) into virgin space with out way out but to go backward.
@MonsterJeep
@MonsterJeep 6 жыл бұрын
Right-on WalterWhite8...good observations. I had the same thoughts so that's why I had an exit strategy and a plan B! But hey, that's what makes it fun...who doesn't like a little challenge? : )

Do understand the risk, oh solo one? Was there an exit strategy other than a cell phone or extra gas? Backing up uphill when in trouble was definitely not the best "plan".
@MonsterJeep
@MonsterJeep 6 жыл бұрын
Hey, right on Bob...thanks for joining the conversation. Well as you pointed out, "Backing up uphill when in trouble was definitely not the best plan." I should first say I didn't feel like I was in any trouble, but that being said, it was my first exit strategy. Maybe not the "best" plan, but I figured I would try to follow my pack back out and surprisingly I usually do better going backward than I do going forward. (and as it turned out, that plan worked) Second, I always have a shovel. I would have gone to that next just for practice, I always like to see if I can dig my way out. Third, I had an exit route going forward and to the left in a big U turn and had winch points (trees) to use if necessary. I don't usually dip off somewhere without an exit strategy. Thanks for the feedback. Happy Trails! : )

You need wider tires I had no problems in the snow with the K5 Blazer only on charlie Brown Christmas trees Lol. p s let more air out of tires
@MonsterJeep
@MonsterJeep 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Duane (Predator) good call. Yeah, I only aired down to around 16 or 18 psi (if I remember right) because I knew my travels we're going to take me back down to bare pavement on my way to my next location so I didn't want to take the time to air back up if I didn't have to. But if I had to I would of aired down more. When I got over to the road after Summit Lake I think I aired down to 6 or 8 psi to get through there. Good to hear from you...Happy Trails! : )

I agree, with chains it will go trough the snow like nothing. I used to work with Mowag Piranha 3c Infantry Vehicles (8x8, like US Stryker) as a platoon commander. One time, we were in the Czech Republic (exercise), quite hilly terrain, with at least 1 foot of snow. Without the chains our 8X8's became 18 tons heavy sleighs. After mounting only four chains on each vehicle, we could climb any steep and snowy hill. It was really impressive!

Hey Pathfinder, I believe it's a Smittybilt 76856 XRC Black Textured Rear Bumper with Hitch and Tire Carrier for Jeep Wrangler/Wrangler Unlimited and then I added a couple of Rock Hard 4x4 tire carrier tank mounts to it. You can find them pretty much anywhere...even on Amazon.

Do you ever look at tracks when you drive? I noticed several locations in the virgin drive, big tracks, but really noticed them about 18:57 or so. I am a big BF skeptic but I always look and those looked different. Could have been elk or bear or something but without seeing the actual track. You ever see anything strange out on your adventures? I have never seen anything I could not justify as being known. have heard some strange sounds once but chalked it up to wolf or a canine anyway love the adventure you had I am subscribing !!Semper Fi

I hear ya Charles...I just put a set of 37 inch Irok Super Swampers on it. Need to get these gears, taller springs and a couple other things installed. But as you know, snow conditions mean everything...it had been above freezing and raining all night and morning and it was above 40 degrees when I was up there. It was very soft and melting underneath. Thanks for your comment and for watching! :) Happy Trails!
