If you've ever wanted to see someone who is not qualified to teach people about or work on carburetors, boy do I have the video for you. This single celled organism is going to rebuild these carbs in order to get the bike running after being forgotten about for 17 years.

Speaking as a professional bike mechanic, this was an EXCELLENT first time deep dive into carbs. The only things I would have done different: remove the slide and float first thing and spray the bodies out as best as possible with carb cleaner and compressed air, then let em soak in some penetrant. That will loosen up stuck jets, etc. or toss the whole ass assembly into an ultrasonic/ bucket of gasoline/ hot soapy water for the same effect. The worst thing you can do with old carbs, from my experience, is going in dry. Also inspecting the diaphragms for pinholes and tears, which I assume was done off camera. Lastly, again in my experience/opinion, submerging the slide diaphragms in the ultrasonic solution is perfectly fine and if its the heated type, will actually improve their condition. One last hot tip, get you some methyl salicylate and put it on all those old rubber parts like intake boots, fairing bushings, etc. It replenishes the oils inside the rubber and makes them pliable and less likely to tear or crack.

Yeah, I'm super new to bikes and even I get nervous using any kind of impact tool to remove stuff, or going caveman mode and banging stuff. It worked out for this guy, but I'm never so lucky so I'm usually super careful lol.

Risk damage going in dry. I also check the diaphragm for pinholes/tears. You can never be too careful, even if you trust your Mrs. If your too hamfisted, she will make the switch to electronic injection (and where does that leave you)?

From a certified Harley Davidson technicion, if it starts up right away like that, you got the carbs dialed in 90+ % Carbs are a challenge and you deserve props for taking your time and doing it right.Great work and great video as always. I'm really looking foward to seeing the rest of the series.

The floatbowls were in the correct orientation in the beginning, if you swap them you make it harder to reach when everything is assembled. They have this orientation so that you can opperate them with a verry long screwdriver from the other side. If you swap them like you did you cant really access them because the frame is in the way.

Firstly, great channel. Back in 1978 I started working on outboard motors. Then motorcycles, in 1981. Cars, 1983. All forms of internal combustion technologies fascinated me. Everything from steam engines to gas turbines and everything in-between. Snapping the extractor was a, School boy error. You didn't have the extractor perpendicular nor your hammer. I have made the same error, when I was restoring a 1964 Mercury outboard motor, in my late teens. Keep up the good work. A big 👍

You asked for carb stories, here's mine. I used to do up old Corollas with K motors - 4 cylinder 1200cc from the 1960s. One afternoon sitting around after work with a mate and his dad, they suggested let's try to modify the carb. Off it came and onto the lathe for a light throat skim and a large vacuum step. I was very skeptical but hey parts were cheap, I think I had several spare carbs at home already. It was back together by 7pm and wow! That became the absolute best most responsive car I've ever driven, including all EFI cars. Years later I realised this guy's dad had spent decades hand-tuning lawnmower engines for go-karts, no budget but lots of time, and he really knew what he was doing by feel alone. I've owned many cars since then but I still have that carb on my garage shelf. Memories.

Wow... For the last few weeks I've been doing the same things to my unstarted for 5 years VMax 1200. Carbs done, coils & leads changed, dodgy wiring repaired, main harness, brake & clutch fluid, oil & fuel filters, fuel lines, coolant o-rings - all replaced and today is FUEL TANK CLEANING day! I'm in the process of bringing my 1989 FZR400 back to life. I bought it brand new when I was a senior on High school. Wrecked it in '93 and its been sitting ever since. I have a 1972 Fiat 500 which hasn’t started for 10 years because the original carburetors were replaced with Webers and these chronically leaked and the engine never idled. Your tear down and final start was so encouraging that Ive decided to take this on with my 16 y.o . So that I can pass on some of the learnings I’ve accumulated from years of rebuilding air cooled bikes, VW’s and a BMW 2002.

Hi Ronald: as for ultrasonic cleaning it is very important to degass your water first. This way you will achieve transient cavitation and will clean better and faster. So that metals don't have to be exposed to cavitation to long. (cavitation erosion) Putting water and detergent in it, turning it on and dropping your carbs in it will not clean it properly for the first (give or take) 15-20 mins. As there is still loads of oxygen in your water. You will hear when transient cavitation is achieved because that's an unmistakable sharp sound. Also: because of the sound waves to create cavitation it's even better to leave the lid on.... Just a note from a humble sr. Validation Engineer :)
