Morgan! I have a friend who lost a hand from clearing snow from a snow packed snow blower. It had a bunch of tension built up. It was locked and when he removed enough snow….😢. I am only posting “dreaded advice” because of risk of maiming. Going back to minding my own business now.

Definitely not a coyote, that's a beautiful red fox displaying its beautiful, thick, winter coat. Their coats thicken up in the winter to help withstand the colder temperatures.

Grandpop kept an area on the edge of his farm that was his "rabbitat" where he would pile brush, etc. to make it a good home for mice and rabbits to feel the coyotes. He felt they were territorial and a resident pack was a good way to keep other packs away. The locals knew where the food was easy and they didn't bother trying to get through the fencing.

I always love to see your weather, because living in northern germany, I can expect exactly your weather with about 5-7°C more xD Also for driving the tractor with the plow: You need to drive much slower (like a crawling speed), so that the blower actually clears out enough. Love for all the animals and you as well as your wife ^-^ Also the ash provides some neutralizing and replentishing minerals to the ground, so it is kind of a good refreshener for the manure and straw.

Hey Morgan, I have a set up for water much like yours. Things I do to make my life easier is 1} quick connects. 2} have a high bar to rest the hose on near the trough (I use a 2x4x8 attached to the fence with a pvc guide screwed on to it for the hose to slide on). 3} a rubber hose that you can pull easily up and over the bar to drain the water and then I take the end back up the hill with me to the faucet and just leave it on the ground so if there is any water left it will be flat ice and easily forced out when hooked back up the next day. I NEVER coil a hose in winter. Good luck - I love your ingenuity :)

If you spray some wd40 on the snowblower it helps in wet snow ❄️
@nodigBKMiche59 минут бұрын
is WD40 biodegradable? I heard wax, cooking oil - but then Abby would be eating the snow....
@79PoisonBreaker4 сағат бұрын
From my perspective you did not have the rpm's up high enough for the snow blower to work as intended, it should be throwing the snow much much further. Low rpm's result in slow snow movement allowing it to build up and clog it. Umm that's not a coyote, that's a red fox. For a hose try one of those expanding hoses and keep it in a reusable grocery bag at the house, regular hoses will not coil up in the cold.

A human has an average of around a 98.6 degree nominal body temperature. A dog has an average of around 102 degrees. Not only that, but some, like yours, have a very thick coat of fur. And that coat of fur, when it is not totally messed up(matted everywhere), is VERY effective. Your dogs could dig a ditch in the snow and law down in it, and they would be as happy like that as they would be in a nice warm living room in your house. Also, doing something today that makes tomorrow better in some way, any way, is a pretty good way to live your life.

I remember when I was 15 or 16 sitting on the porch with my grandparents and uncles & listening to them talking about they didn't see many more redtail hawks or black racer snakes. I thought, "Yep. Because you keep killing them every time you see one. Why are you surprised?" A few weeks later, they talked about how there were more mice around. Well, duh. This was back in the late 70s, so attitudes and knowledge has changed. But it's definitely an eco system. Also, that looked like a red fox to me.

Winter time hose draining and overnight storage idea.. install a pulley just outside the Barn Second Story window add a rope that will reach down both sides of the pulley to the ground at the end of the day tie rope to the end of hose and raise up to pully. with the other end at the ground level tied off to a cleat. .... Drag the hose back and forth with no coiling or rolling or wrestling for the overnight ...... hope that helps

Suggestion for your hoses: get a small battery-powered air compressor, bring the battery in to charge each night, then use the compressor to blow water out of the hoses. Then drain angles don't matter so much.

Morgan, you lived in VA long enough to know how to pronounce that y'all 😀 You need to install that Y'all-O-Meter in a flat unobstructed spot. I don't know why it doesn't come with mounting stakes - I cut up a metal hanger and stuck the wires in the holes in the end of the plastic to stick in the ground and then also used a little bungee around it and a piece of rebar I stuck in the ground behind it for more stability. It survived that 60 mph wind we had last winter in Burlington.

As a first time owner of a couple of young LGD great pyrs, I have a question. When you capture your chickens and they get upset, do your dogs react? When my husband grabs one of our roosters and the rooster cries bloody murder, the dogs go alert. Not sure if I should be allowing them to look at what's happening, or tell them to ignore it. To their credit, they do seem to just be checking what's going on and they don't chase the roosters after the bird gets put back down.

If your snow comes straight down with no wind, then you can measure it on the top of your fence; otherwise you should measure it on the ground if you want to be accurate. You probably know this; you were just doing the easiest thing this morning in a fun way. And you probably get way less wind in Vermont, lucky you!

Looks like a red fox to me. But also Morgan has guardian dogs unless the Fox incredibly sneaky. Then it’s not going to have much chance of getting one of his poultry. Plus the fence is tipped with hot wire which makes it a lot harder. Unless the coyotes came down in large numbers to have a go at one of his calves then they’re not going to be much use against two large guardian dogs, especially when they’re being backed up by a herd of angry, highland cattle with horns. The contacts I saw some footage, the other day of the same breed of cattle, trying to give a Glasgow kiss to a wolf in the Netherlands. Coyotes like foxes are opportunists. It’s a case of grab something when you can but unless you’re really hungry you don’t go in guns blazing again against a bloody great big pair of guardian dogs. The vantage so Morgan has right now is that with his past is affectively in their off-season. The coyotes can come in and knock off some of the various rodents rabbits and other bits and pieces running around the place. And not get chased by the dogs. Also, if anything succumb to the storm, then the coyotes will clean it up . Latin, hopefully they will have knocked off a few of the young deer in the vulnerable stage earlier this year, so the woods won’t be overrun with young deer, trying to make it through the winter
