We have had football dynasties for decades. They operated on reputation and locked up generations of talent in their 2nd & 3rd strings. If they lost it was because they didn’t show up. The stories are always about the nobility after all. The Portal and NIL changes that, and it makes teams competitive that never were before. And the media hasn’t caught up.

I realize most CFB media don't like to dig this deep into the facts about SOS ranking. They are usually too lazy...or simply do not want to face the facts. The problem with Georgia's alleged Strength of Schedule (SOS) rankings (as with all SEC teams) is that, this year, Georgia's opponents' sublevel opponents (FCS and Subdivision Teams) have a negative 23 Win/Loss margin. This means that Georgia's opponents, including SEC opponents, played Sublevel opponents who have a combined 23 more losses than wins. SEC fans don't like to hear this inconvenient fact, but FCS/Sublevel teams with terrible records, like Kent State, Wagner, UTEP, Furman, Samford and UMass (Which Georgia actually played themselves) were all played by Georgia's opponents. Its important for people to understand the reason the national media claims Georgia's SOS is ranked so high is because Georgia's opponents played really, really, really shitty FCS schools to get easy wins, which Georgia gets credit for when they play them. This negative loss margin among Georgia's Opponents' Sublevel Opponents is among the WORST in the nation. Moreover, the SEC plays more opponents who have played sublevel opponents, in total, than any other conference, late in the season. This yields a fraudulent SOS ranking for SEC teams which other conference are not allowed to benefit from because other conference do not play subdivision schools late in the season when records reflect results from 10+ games. Conferences, other than the SEC, play "tune up" games against sublevel opponents at the beginning of the year, within the first three games. The SEC plays them late in the season when SOS matters more, statistically, in support of national rankings. When you subtract sublevel team wins from Georgia's opponents' records, counting only FBS level opponents compared with FBS level opponents of other conferences, the SEC actually has very low SOS rankings. Essentially, the SEC struggles with FBS teams who have mediocre W/L records, but whom have not played Sublevel/FCS opponents late in the season. Especially highly ranked contenders in other conferences. These SEC W/L records become even worse when the SEC plays these non-conference contenders on the road. Florida, for example, actually has the HIGHEST SOS ranking in the SEC when counting only the records of the FBS opponents played by Gator opponents. The "FBS Opponent Only" approach reveals some startling disparities with commonly promoted SEC SOS rankings. For example, Georgia's opponents have a total Win % of .562 (68-53) through week 14 of the 2024 season. At first glance, this appears to support a strong SOS for Georgia. One of Georgia's wins, however, was against Tennessee, which also has a 9-2 record. Georgia (9-2) defeated Tennessee on Nov. 16. However, when we look deeper into the data, Tennessee's opponents have a total combined record of 52-71 (.423). Moreover, the dirty secret about Tennessee's record, however, is that the Vols played 3 FCS/Sublevel schools with the worst combined records of any other three SEC Sublevel opponents, of 9-24 (Tennessee played Chattanooga (7-5), Kent State (0-11) and UTEP (2-8) in November). This means that Georgia gets SOS credit for beating a 9-2 Tennessee, who played absolutely abysmal FCS/Sublevel schools with a combined win % of .272!! Another example, Kentucky, (who Georgia defeated by only one point 13-12) played FCS/Sublevel schools (S. Miss, Ohio and Murray State) with a combined record of 10-24 (negative 14 Win/Loss Margin). However, if we remove FCS/Sublevel records from Tennessee's and Kentucky's collective Win %, Georgia actually only defeated a 6-2 Tennessee team, not 9-2, and a 1-7 Kentucky team, not 4-7. When adjusted for all Georgia opponents, the combined win/loss record using FBS only opponents is 42-45 (.483) rather than 68-53 (.562)! When extrapolated across the entire SEC schedule, this has a dramatic affect in decreasing the SOS ranking for SEC teams. When using only legitimized W/L data to calculate SOS among SEC teams, the conference actually has some of the worst SOS rankings in the nation. Georgia, for example, actually ranks 6th in the SEC and 88th nationally. Sorry. Just the facts.

This is exactly what I’ve been saying about college football. The old guard of white coaches is being forced out, and a new generation of Black coaches, like Deion Sanders, is stepping up because they actually connect with the youth on a deeper level. It’s refreshing to see, but also exposing how uncomfortable some people are with this change. I’ve never seen Finebaum smile so much as when he talks about Colorado struggling. You can feel his pleasure at seeing Deion fail-it’s not even subtle. And Stephen A.? He’s no real Colorado fan. He’s all over them when they’re winning, but as soon as they take an L, he’s quick to take jabs. Let’s be honest, neither Finebaum nor Stephen A. were true athletes, so their opinions don’t hold much weight. The only one keeping it real is Shannon Sharpe. He’s a Hall of Famer, someone who knows what it’s like to be an athlete and understands the grind. His takes actually matter because they come from experience. Finebaum can’t hide his bias, and Stephen A. seems eager to keep his bosses happy. Meanwhile, Deion is out here breaking barriers and inspiring a generation. I’ll say this loud and clear: Go Buffs! #CoachPrime #ColoradoBuffs #PrimeTimeDeionSanders
