Not a furry, been aware of them since PoE way way back in 1996 or so, searching KZbin for cringeworthy furryism, and..... uh... find a video of a guy/girl wearing a fursuit obviously designed and made by a professional, behaving appropriately and catch myself smiling when I see that little kid laughing. Someone I knew quite well is a furry, something I only found out years after knowing him, and I was surprised that he was so 'normal' (patronizing and meaningless, I know), held down a job, didn't live with his parents, talked about all kinds of things in the way most other adults did. A sub-culture can be defined by the people most prominent as a member of it, but with furries those people have been, largely speaking, utter trainwrecks. Funnily enough I mentioned this idea to said friend, and he said (as a furry) that he believed the same and how much it irritated him. Pardon the essay, but good on you sir/madam.

Sometimes when I go through comments on furry videos and come across the phrase "I'm not a furry, (but...)" that phrase almost always precedes some sort of bashing. I almost always get that sinking feeling and if I were to read it I'd think, "Ugh, lets get this over with." Or if not, I'd think "It's not worth my time or energy." In your second paragraph, I think I can understand why you'd be surprised by finding a furry that acts, for want of a better word, "normally". I would guess that's due to either seeing news stories or (insert CSI episode here) that metaphorically took the rotten apples out of the barrel and threw them at people's faces. I mean, why do you think historically people threw rotten tomatoes at people? Because they wanted to humiliate them, not hurt them. The portrayal of the fanbase as being a group of mentally disturbed people is quite a low blow, and it's also a bit contradictory as well, because there are much, MUCH worse groups out there, furries are simply people having fun without being (too) detached from reality. Now I won't deny that there ARE "those guys" who are vocal nit-wits and, intentionally or not, causes trouble for the rest of us. More often than not a swift telling off will sort it out, but some of "those guys" don't get the message as easily as others. Thus, that causes mischief for the rest of us. BUT, but we do try our utmost to "put our best foot forward" as they say, and whenever the media comes around, either every furry within a 100 mile radius will make themselves scarce, or Dr Samuel Conway/Uncle Kage comes to make face noise at the camera. So in short: For the most part we are very decent people, because we have to be. Not only because of the public, but of ourselves: we have to keep a close eye on us to be sure we're behaving. And for the most part, it works very well. And you never know who is a furry, for the most part though: they're very good at computers and/or art.

so cute and it is nice to see such a friendly group of people. word of advice though find a find to be with you from now on. i noticed you grabbed your nose and face when the kid pushed or pulled on it a bit. as a fellow fur fan i think you where just worried about the kid damaging your suit by all the pushing and pulling but it seems the people did not get it having a none suited friend (or at least one who will talk) really helps avoid misunderstanding and lowers the risk of not only damage to the suit but injury to yourself. (And yes i know this advice is two years too late but a friendly reminder never hurts and i just had to say it in case you where still running into issues like this.)

+Justicar333 Understandable, of course the quality of the suits in the fandom are far beyond what you'd get in just any costume shop, therefore the people who make the suits experiment with how the static masks could be made to have more expression to them. There are a few that, when tilted up or down, can look like they are either smiling, neutral or frowning, not forgetting 3D eyes and moveable jaw among other things.
