... Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). Ah you've met Floor Jansen, lead singer of Nightwish. Third one, in fact. But you haven't heard all that she can do. Not even close. I've heard her sing Dutch, German, Finnish, Spanish, Swedish and Latin. I've heard her song rock, metal, pop, jazz, lullaby and aria. I've heard her hold a D6 for 8 seconds, and I've heard her do deathgrowls. Stick with Nightwish and you'll hear her do many of these things. She is married to the drummer of Sabaton, lives in Sweden and the Netherlands interchangeably, and stays at the Nightwish cabin (Tuomas' cabin in lapland in Finland with its own studio) when she's doing band stuff. -Keyboards: Tuomas Holopainen, the founder of Nightwish and the primary composer, arranger, lyric writer, and all around badass with the keyboards. He is sometimes called "the metal Mozart" because he, along with a few other composers from other bands, kinda kickstarted the whole symphonic metal genre. He has formal musical training, and has a somewhat unknown ability to take time signatures that shouldn't work (like the 7/6 at the start of Ghost Lover Score) and makes them work in service of metal. He also has two other projects, one under his own name where his wife sings and plays characters for his "musical plays," and a secondary band that lets him explore his more classical-rock combo side, Auri, which has two official releases out as of 2021. -Drums: Jukka Nevalainen. In 2015, he temporarily pulled back from drumming due to medically diagnosed severe insomnia, which if not treated can actually be severely damaging to the human body and sometimes even fatal. It was because of the touring, and the constant resetting of time zones and jetlag that led to him developing the insomnia, and it really took a toll on his mental and physical health. Kai Hahto, Jukka's mentor and "the human metronome" of Wintersun fame, was called in as a temporary replacement until Jukka decided to retire from the band and is now part of the management team behind the band. Kai officially signed on to the band to replace him. Jukka is very well known for his "animated" drumming style, as you can see during the bridge where he is bouncing on the drum throne waiting to do his drum solo ^__^ -Lead guitar: Emppu Vuorinen, "the metal hobbit" because he is short af, and one of the original three that formed the first version of Nightwish when it was Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja only. I think he's officially like 5'1" or 5'2", but he is an insanely good guitar player that doesn't often show off just how good he is, preferring to play more of a rhythm style guitar to Tuomas' keyboard leads. When he DOES shred, however, he is literally one of the fastest pickers, tappers, and counter-strummers in the world, not just in metal, but in THE WORLD. He has three official guitars through ESP, the EV-1 which he is playing in this video, a white painted model called the EV-2 which is his standard E tuned guitar, not the drop D of the EV-1, and the EV-3, which was used in HUMAN:||:NATURE for the first time, IIRC. My fellow Nightwish army members will correct me if I'm wrong ^_^ -Bass guitar: Marko Hietala, "the bass Viking." For the longest time, he had his name spelled Marco because that is a far more global way of spelling and saying it, but he reverted to the Ural-Baltic (Finnish and Estonian) spelling of Marko for his last few years with Nightwish. He is the lead singer and frontman of Tarot, formed in 1984 with his brother Zach. He was probably the most tech-savvy member of Nightwish, as he worked as a studio and recording tech before Tarot got their big break in 1986. While touring with Tarot in 1998, pure chance (or fate, if you believe in that) put Tarot and Nightwish on the same bill, as the "new" band Nightwish was opening for the "established" band Tarot. 3 years later, after the departure of bassist Sami Vanska, Tuomas asked his friend if he wanted to sing and play bass in the rapidly developing project that was Nightwish, which by now was gaining worldwide recognition. Marko stayed with Nightwish until 2021, when he retired from the band because of not wanting to be as much in the public eye, having a little privacy for himself and his family, and also because he disagreed heavily with the way that Middle Eastern companies had snapped up a lot of studios and some labels during the pandemic that were faltering and nearing bankruptcy, as it put the majority of financial and production power into one area of the world, while he believed that studios and labels should be global and spread out to create the best sounds, bands, and releases. -Uilleann pipes, tin whistle, flute, mandolin, rhythm guitar, vocals, and some composition (NOT SHOWN IN STORYTIME): Troy Donockly, multi-talented multi-instrumentalist that started his journey with Nightwish as a session player with Dark Passion Play (album) in 2007, and in 2011-2013 was brought along on the Imaginaerum world tour because he was in so many of the songs in subtle ways. After the tour, both he and Floor were offered permanent positions in the band, and both accepted. Troy can be heard very clearly as the "poet" in Song of Myself from the Imaginaerum, and as the singer in Harvest from HUMAN:||:NATURE. He is amazingly talented with so many instruments, and was literally bouncing between projects almost every 6 months, so for him to join Nightwish, it was a lot of stability for him, and he can, and does, still do projects between tours and studio sessions with Nightwish.

Great reaction. Floor Jansen is a vocal athlete with incredible range, versatility, vocal stamina, and stage presence. She is a spinto soprano with a range of around four octaves +. When listening to Floor sing, it is apparent that she has spent the better part of her life fine-tuning her instrument with help from several vocal coaches. Floor can sing in multiple languages and genres, and is a Master vocal coach. She often refers to herself as a vocal nerd. It is incredible how she is able to take any song from any genre and make it her own. This woman is a true gift to her craft and an incredible addition to a band that has always been great until 2013 when they officially hired the undisputed Queen of Metal, Floor Jansen, making Nightwish the greatest band on the planet. Montreal tomorrow, then 11 concerts in the US, moving from East to West. Before North America they played two home concerts in Finland, in Tampere and in Helsinki. I attended both. Nightwish was founded in 1996 in Kitee Finland, a small town of 10 000 people. Floor Jansen is the 3rd and current female lead vocalist of Nightwish. She is Dutch. She joined Nightwish in 2012 on a 48 hour notice mid Nightwish US tour, replacing the previous female vocalist. Greetings from Finland! The keyboardist Tuomas is the founder, songwriter and leader of the band.

There are no bad songs and each one you hear is very different from the other. And each one will become your new favorite. That might sound ridiculous but we have seen it over and over again. This is a live band. This is a rarity that the live music is better than the engineered versions. Stick with live. General Gabriel should arrive to give you a road map and a history to help you on this most magical of journeys. A few of my suggestions outside of this concert venue, Yours is an empty Hope, Wembley. I saw them live in Denver two days ago. I'm 54 and that was my first concert since the mid 80s. What a way to re-join the rock/metal concert-going crowd than to see Nightwish live! I was maybe 50ft from the stage. Just magical. The whole band performed at or very, very near perfection (as always). The ticket and travel expenses to see them were worth every penny (I live 7+ hours away by car in Utah). I am so glad they decided to add several more shows in the US or I would not have been able to attend. They only have 3 remaining shows in the US. One show in San Fransisco and two shows in Los Angeles. I think there may still be some tickets available. If you are able to attend, you will not be dissapointed.
