This song struck a nerve when it came out late fall of 1977, I was 10th grade. I also went to a very conservative Christian school. My theory how this song became huge is that everyone was singing it, it was that one secular song that your devout Christian mama would allow you to play on the radio and at home because she liked it to. It was the aligning of the stars and divine intervention that catapulted this song on the airwaves

I love watching young people explore the older music and get to experience some amazing artists from different time periods. I was born in 1956 and have seen an incredible evolution of music. I have to say that back in the day there was no auto tune or computer generated music. It was all pure talent. I love the reactions and appreciation you show 💜😊

Oh - it was a hit, for sure! I remember it well, still today. It was on radio - without options of today. '77, record (vinyl), 8-track or radio (AM, typically). Hits about the same time frame (but only from memory, not looking thing up) ... JimEd Brown/Helen Cornellius, Huge hit with Barbara Mandrell and can't forget Crystal Gayle ... several others but not coming to me at the time. Why am I here -- I'm sub'd .... but the Home Free reactions was the start and when I see something of interest -- I check it out (but not always comment). : ) Be Safe

First, let me say, I love the persona that you two come across with on screen. You seem to be really wonderful people Debbie Boone is the daughter of Pat Boone who is a very famous singer from the 50s so it’s no surprise that she has such a beautiful voice. Pat Boone had a single called love letters in the sand that was very famous in his time. A really nice song keep doing what you’re doing we all love it!😊

Trivia: Carole King wrote and performed "You Light Up My Life" in 1973, four years before Debbie Boone performed this one. They're NOT two versions of the same song, the two songs are completely different lyrics and music. The hook line in Carole's is "You really light up my life. You give me faith and hope and love and light."
@Coffeecorner2000Ай бұрын
No you're totally wrong the Carole King song that has the same title but it is a totally different song the Debby Boone song "You Light Up My Life" was written by Joe Brooks not by Carole King. Bexause two songs that has the same titles doesn't mean it's the same song, i gues you never heard Carole Kings version because then you would never made a comment like this.

I graduated highschool in 1977, rural Indiana (very Bible belt, ya know? and also the center of much gospel music - Gaither band, and others.) Three classmates had this song at their wedding, and I played the piano for two of the weddings. (edit added: A late 1970's wedding ceremony in rural Indiana was 1) still very traditional 2) held in a church, whether either newlywed attended church or not 3) included a unity-candle ceremony 4) had live piano, or piano and guitar, accompanying . . . 5) a friend/relative of bride or groom singing something like "We've Only Just Begun", the Carpenters, or ... "You Light Up My Life." And sung during the untiy-candle lighting ceremony . . . ;)

I expected Debby to be an all time great, but I don't think she necessarily was aiming for that, and wanted to be true to herself and her faith. It is easy to respect that, and she has been able to have a successful marriage since 1979, and four children.
