Dolores O'Riordan was an expert in 'keening' which is a traditional Irish form of singing. She was also unusual in singing in her normal Limerick accent - a lot of Irish singers sing in a 'neutral' vaguely American accent but Dolores engraved her brogue on every word she sang.

Well. I think more accurately, it's called yodeling (very common across ... many folk traditions). Keening, from my understanding, is more of a genre of music. An Irish song of grievance, often sung with a lot of yodel.

Keening was a traditional form of mourning. It was a part of the traditional way of life of the rural , mostly remote native Irish language speaking areas. There were older women who were called "keeners" and would go to village wakes, as a group, and chant keens for the deceased. It is a long dead practice and has disappeared from modern Ireland. The only place you will get a hint of it is from some of the traditional "sean nos" singing in the Irish language in the Gaeltacht regions of the west of Ireland.

Love the drumming track on this. Not a boring standard riff. Fergal Lawler is such an intuitive drummer. RIP Dolores. This song has been in heaps of movies and shows. Most recently Yellowjackets. 18 year old fell in love. Didn't turn out well though. Most of the songs for this album and next were about the break-up. lol. Dolores incorporated a lot of primal vocals including monk chanting in her vocals. More Cranberries please. And Dolores also had two amazing solo albums too. The track "Loser" has one of the best put down lines in a song ever for me.

This type of traditional vocal effect in singing is called "Keening" and it comes from Irish (celtic) music. You'll also hear it with Sinead O'Conner for example. You should listen to the Cranberries' 'Linger' next. Great track! I seem to remember you listened to the excellent "Nothing compares to you" from Sinead, "Mandika" would be a good next track from her

@@johnnie160 OK I'm happy to learn J_WAR. I'd read that it's a 'vocal style' that pretty unique to Ireland which is inspired by Keening. I have to agree that you don't hear vocal inflections similar to this elsewhere, but you do in Ireland and Irish folk. Sinead is the other example I give. So you're saying there's no connection to Keening? Is it just originating from Irish folk music?

@@JonseyWales yeah not a criticism. I’m Irish. Keening isn’t singing or music. It’s a solemn kind of wailing that the older women used to do at a funerals. It’s not music. Delores just used to sing like this and some people recently have likened it to keening. But keening doesn’t have a melody.

I've heard it's called keening, and is used in grieving. I'm not Irish( (I'm Finnish) But I've read that the rising notes that sound like almost yodeling, is keening.
