"Lost in the pages of a book full of death"... is the Bible. He was pondering life and death (and everything in between), and what our purpose here is.😊 One of the most beautiful songs ever written!! Love your channel so much!!! Keep 'em coming!!!❤ 🙏Rest in sweet peace Chris, "no one sings like you anymore".😞❤❤❤

I'd say it's a general reading of religious texts, unless you think the bible is particularly full of death (Lol) as opposed to dealing with what happens after death/existence as in theology...which is why he says that he will pray like a pagan, to anyone...as long as he has hope of getting to a better place...but as far as we know, the longest lasting memories of us as individuals will be carved upon our tomb-stones...kind of reminiscent of Shelly's poem, Ozymandias..."Behold my great works and tremble"...and the long, lonely sands stretched far away...one of the most tragic yet hopeful songs ever written...kind of a flipped perspective from the king who will inevitably see his monuments whither, to an average man who hopes his one love can transcend existence itself...

Tom Morello is a master guitarist. He is using a tremolo pedal when playing clean at the beginning (or the tremolo effect come from his amp), then some type of overdrive or distortion pedal on top of the tremolo for the chorus. His solo is a highly distorted tone. I would guess that he is stacking another overdrive/distortion or boost pedal on top of the distorted chorus sound, adding reverb and a delay pedal, and using a volume pedal to get the swells. What makes this solo special for me is the melody line he plays and the fact that he is not over playing the solo. This allows the song to continue and maintains the song's vibe. This is an artist at work.

@@mannybravo237 Not sure what form of delay he was using, but I am pretty sure he is operating a volume pedal to get the swells during the solo. Of course I could be wrong.

This song hits me so hard you don't even know, bro. Let me explain, frontman of Audioslave, Chris Cornell, took his own life at 54, he was good friends with Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington, who took his own life shortly after Chris at age 41...and they were both influenced by Layne Staley of Alice in Chains who died at 34...I've just turned 38, and these men are my heroes, not to mention the 27 Club of people who died before at that age: Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, ect. It just seems that the more that you embrace life, the faster you rush toward your death, as the saying goes, "The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long."

Chris and Layne shared a rehearsal space with lots of other bands in the very early days of grunge. Another band that shared that space was Andrew Wood, they were friends, Wood was the lead singer of Mother Love Bone who had just dropped their album and it was climbing. Then they found him ODed and it hit them hard. Both bands set to writing songs about their friend. The remainder of Mother Love Bone (most) joined up with a new singer introduced to them by Chris. The shirt Layne is wearing in the song "Would?" (by Alice In Chains), and the song is about Wood (hence Would?). Chris is AMMAZZZBALLLS!

@@bartstarr100 Yeah, much love to the Love Bone...so many made it so close, but never "Broke"...or broke and then died like the 27 Club (of which Andrew didn't even make it at 24)...so much talent that was lost if only someone would have come and alleviated their troubles...I guess life is fickle like that...

Tom Morello is a very creative guitarist. An electric guitar can be made to sound like just about anything with the use of "Effect Pedals" that distort the clean sound it normally makes. Tom can make that instrument sound like he is scratching on a turntable.

It's sad this song was written for a friend who passed, that he wanted to join. And eventually took his self there, and it affected chester the same way, and he did the exact same thing to his self, i think 1 year later. The sadness is overwhelming sometimes, but people don't realize that when they do that, the ones left behind are always the ones who suffer. ❤

I grew up in grunge in Seattle during AudioSlave, Pearl jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden and Hole. Although our music was celebrated a sad numbing time. We didn't give a crap how we dressed and totally indifferent to our own futures. This music is about anger and losing faith in the future.

Plus you have to understand our generation grew up hearing about free love and sexual revolution to only be shut down by the AIDS epidemic. We only know you could die from sex for years. I think that caused a lot of resentment and confusion for my generation and our music reflected that.
