Rob's a trained opera singer. Austin's training is in musical theater. Rob has said that there is no way for them to perform this live, as the warmup for it is completely different than what they need for their country acapella performances. He also played this for his father in 2022 as a Father's Day present. It left his father in tears to hear his son perform what he had trained for and which his father believed he would never get to hear again. (Austin's appearance always looks like Don Giovanni from the Mozart opera!) Peter Barber is a classical opera bass who reacted to this. He wasn't surprised to find out that Rob is classically trained.

Rob's professors at the University of Minnesota encouraged him to consider opera as a music career. However, Rob wasn't interested and chose another career path. Austin had a full scholarship in musical theater. It was Austin who encouraged Rob to do the aria. It took Rob a month to get prepared since he hadn't sung the genre in fifteen years. Both Rob and Austin were nervous about people's reactions to the video when they released it. People's reaction has been amazement at their abilities. Peter Barber, a trained opera singer, of The Bass Gang is highly complimentary about Rob's ability to sing opera. He has stated that Rob could have easily became a working opera singer if he had chosen that career path.

I have no expertise in Classical Arts ..... if you know Italian, go to the opera ... perhaps you can pan or pick the critical elements apart .... tom that I say ... THEY DO A WIDE VARIETY OF GENRE IN MUSIC .... what they do ....they do it better than anyone .... critical enunciation and technique aside .... they are incredible here too. Thanks for the background .... I figured Rob was the initiative. GBjj

@@jeffreyjacobs390 Italian reactors have said that their Italian is correct in the song. Professional opera singers have slight criticisms on technique which seem mere differing opinions on how to do particular words with mouth placement or breathing. Austin put his country accent away for the performance. Austin was trained to get rid of his native accent at school, but he decided to retain it since people didn't mind or even liked his accent. Austin isn't singing as an opera singer, but is performing as a crossover artist. He gets high praise for his performance as does Rob by professional opera singers.

Years ago, Rob's vocal coach predicted Rob could have a HUGE career in opera. Thank God he joined Home Free!!!! It's reported that Austin (who talked Rob into doing this) recorded his part first but when he heard Rob he went back and re-recorded his because he said it just wasn't nearly good enough. Most reactors expected it to be a cappella because it's Rob and Austin but I don't think opera could be done properly without the symphony music. Then again Adam's damn near a symphony all by himself lol.

- Yup, that pretty much sums it up. Rob could sing over an orchestra with his technique (ie: no microphone... just fill an opera house with nothing but your voice).. Austin can hit all the right notes... but he would be completely drowned out if he weren't miked up. It's a very different style and technique needed to do true operatic performances.

I immediately trusted them on this journey into their form of country music. After getting to know the range of their talents, I knew why. The amazement on your face after those first 8 or 10 notes was priceless -- not to mention the last refrain! You also have recognized their extreme talents, but even your jaw hit the floor. When this was first released, they'd not teased any of it. The use of 'try' in the title had some expecting lip syncing or something typically comedic which the HF guys are so skillful at doing. Loved your surprised expression. Have seen a few reactors dissolve into tears. Some professional opera singers have offered lengthy commentary on this performance, but for me, having it dissected to the nth degree would take away from my enjoyment of it, therefore, I have chosen to steer clear of those reactions. This was received so enthusiastically by fans there were requests for more Rob and Austin opera collabs. (I even proposed they could enlist the rest of the guys and surely Adam can do 'orchestral' sounds.) But have seen comments that R and A have said that won't be doing any more like this. You'll never look at these two, quite the same, again.

Welcome to opera! Opera has some of the most beautiful music you've ever heard. Rob was classically trained, Austin wasn't. You may want to watch Maggie Renee's reaction to this. She is a classically trained opera singer (currently singing in the opera world). She had nothing but good things to say about both of them. And if you want to get into opera, she's a good one to view on this video, as she talks about the differences between operatic singing and "regular" singing.

Don't listen to Maggie Renee - thinks she knows it all and in fact comes out with absolute rubbish, treating highly trained and highly experienced singer as if they were peasants. Her reaction to this, that you think so highly of, was patronising in the extreme. Her behaviour towards the band, blaming them for her spat with their distributor and YT, when she had broken the rules for making money out of others' work, was disgraceful. A thoroughly nasty piece of work and seems to know nothing of the opera scene in the last 100 years. Avoid.

@@brendasorenson6186 I would not trust anything Renee says. She has always behaved as though she is somehow "better" than highly trained and far more experienced singers, and her reaction to this was typically patronising (and a lot of it was downright wrong). She is in fact a student of singing, not a professional. She also showed her true character a few months ago when she launched a vicious public attack on Home Free because she had tried to do her usual thing of basically auctioning off others' work without following the YT rules. For the sake of a few dollars she told people not to listen to the band (who had always been very nice to her - Austin gave her an interview and somehow contained the irritation he must have been feeling when she treated him like a complete redneck). She ended up blaming HF's manager, who had been trying to help her. She lost a fantastic number of subs, deservedly, along with most of her reputation. Peter Barber also has a slightly inflated opinion of himself and a very old-fashioned idea of what opera is. He did a collab with Jen Glatzhofer, which didn't really work because he didn't seem to understand the genre.

For me he will be able to stand with the greatest of opera singers. This is perfection for me.. I'm so glad you enjoyed this so much! It makes me feel overwhelmed all over again (having seen it about 100 times) when I see someone else react with such heartfelt enthusiasm. Apart from being a stunning sound,, it's a useful example of the range and difference of tenor voice types. Rob's comfort zone is actually much lower than we normally hear it, going towards baritone, and the dropped larynx used in the sort of operatic training he had is what produces the richness . People have talked a lot of nonsense about Austin needing more training to sing like Rob - the fact is that they have different vocal architecture, and in fact Austin is a particularly fine example of a lyric tenor, but of a rare type. He has what the Italians call "spinto" - an incisive quality that enables a lyric tenor (who by nature can't produce the brute vocal force necessary to be heard against a full orchestra) to cut through the sound. It can't be taught, you're born with it. Jose Carreras was the most famous example of "spinto", enabling him to sing a whole range of roles. I would guess that this quality is why Austin's teachers wanted him to continue in opera. The college where he studied music theatre demands classical perfection from its singers and everyone has to prepare for and go through auditions for every college production, opera included. Something else that shines through this video is the love and trust that these two men have for each other. Each of them is the other's biggest fan, and it's been like that since they first met. They haven't collaborated before, probably because they live at opposite ends of the country, whereas Austin and Tim both live in Nashville. Austin's TikTok does contain some minor collaborations, notably a country version of What's Your Fantasy by Ludacris, which deserves a wider audience, if only for its inspired lunacy.

The problem I have with opera is they are sooo stuck up on the tiny details; how long you hold a note, do you pronounce Dorma or Dormah, where you take your breaths, etc. You can have the most magnificent voice but you have to play the game of how the aficionados want it presented. Opera critics I have seen react to this say yes, they sing it well, then pick it apart. Opera Singers, on the other hand are tickled pink. Most of them love it and say, though it's not professional level, it's wonderful and give them cheers. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it so much. We Home Fries would have loved them if they'd messed it up entirely but we're beaming with pride that they actually did so well, as we thought they could.

It's been a blast watching reactors' shocked expressions, especially after Rob's 1st verse. That Austin's channel has not yet registered even half a million views is crazy. Suppression of talent by the corporate music industry and their radio lackeys needs to stop.

Sadly, Rob resists to go farther down this road, however, check out Austin’s “Bring Him Home” Le Miserable. Look for the video of him at home, accompanied by piano rather then the live, with Home Free.

Opera reactors have said Rob even now would be a sought after opera singer and tha Austin could work as much as he wanted as a classical crossover singer

Perhaps you could react to or listen to Dimash Qudaibergen from Kazakhstan. Dimash is considered the greatest singer in the world with a vocal range of over 7 octaves and quite capable of performing everything from opera to contemporary and combining both sounds in one song. Dimash Qudaibergen Olympico/ Ogni Pietra. (Krutoy) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpyzhGmqbZmknZY This is a glimpose of what he can do.
