The Beastie Boys were notorious for being great rappers but also playing their own instruments and infusing rock elements into rap WAAAAAY before most other artists thought to do so. They’re truly amazing. I also believe they have the best selling rap album of the 80s? Don’t quote me on that…but I think it might be true. Love them.

The Beastie Boys were first a punk rock band. Completely punk rock on their first album the Pollywog stew album . It was their second album Liscened to Ill where they introduced rap and hip hop. Their role models were the Bad Brains. The Beastie Boys took the B&B from Bad Brains and came up with the name Beastie Boys. Whereas the Bad Brains were an all black band playing hardcore punk rock .The Beastie Boys were inspired by the Bad Brains to do something similar being white kids making rap music. Later the Beastie Boys would produce a Bad Brains record Build a Nation on Megaforce records.

Actually, they are doing a parody of the 1970's cop shows and movies. Also realize that the Beastie boys started out as a PUNK ROCK band at the beginning of the 1980's. Like Run-DMC, they incorporated a lot of rock vibes into their music. They actually made their own music and are very good musicians. I am surprised how so many people today cannot watch a video AND listen to the lyrics. It was always easy for us.

YES! So glad you did these guys. I hope you do more. Their catalogue is deep and wide. They were kind of their own genre. Most of their stuff is more straight hip hop, but they combined hip hop, punk, metal (in their early days anyway), jazz, funk, psych-rock, and experimentation to make something that's not quite like any other band. Such a fun group.

Nu Metal was prototyped by Rage Against the Machine in '92, it was officially made as Nu Metal by KoRn in '95. So every so called "Rap Rock/Metal" genre before '92 like Beastie Boys and Faith No More are probably the sounds that influenced Nu Metal. But they all must thank Aerosmith and RUN DMC with that unusual collab that gave birth to it all.

There was a huge crossover with the Hiphop scene and the Punk scene in NYC in the 70’s and the Beasties come straight out of that mixture, and are themselves a super important part of HipHop’s foundations, and as stated in some of the other comments, the video is a spoof of 70’s police shows. 😎

That genre-mix was a big thing in the early nineties ... we used to call it Crossover ... Rage Against the Machine, Bodycount, Clawfinger, P.O.D., etc. etc. the whole Judgement Night soundtrack ... a bit like Run DMC vs. Aerosmith on steroids, the moment when Rappers and Rockers started to take each other seriously and recognised that there was a lot of common ground attitude-wise.

This was pretty much the peak of the Beastie Boys and the end of a pretty incredible run of albums. They did an album of Rick Rubin produced party jams. Then they did an experimental hip hop album composing with samples. Then they got sued a bunch and the laws on sampling changed so they picked up instruments and did a moody political hip hop album. The fourth album, the one with this song, is them taking everything they learned and making another party jam album. Their best song is actually off the moody political album. It's called "Somethings got to give" and it's still one of the most original sounding songs I've ever heard. Genre wise they are solidly hip hop. They played around with the edges of the genre but never really broke away from the rapping over a beat format, even if the beats got weird. Outkast pushed the boundaries a lot more and I never hear anyone questioning if they are hip hop. I blame vanilla ice. They idea that three jewish white kids from New York could be a legit hip hop group is met with skepticism but they worked with Qtip and Nas so good enough for me.

Call it Chaos rock. Where the choice of all the instruments and beats and tempos are crushed together create a chaotic gritty sound of music. There are songs that I love because the arrangements are so off and forced together that it's pure "chaos" at the studio or on stage. This song and Living colors song cult of personality and a Kidd rock song called "where U at rock where you at" I used to hear. My old home stereo had 2 reverbs hooked up to it And I would turn up the reverbs And the delays sound-effects all the way up. And it was so chaotic And crazy sounding that it made you call down or some thing .. And most ac/dc songs should be called chaos rock.

"I feel like there are no guitars". But...there ARE guitars. It opens with a riff and has a solo in the middle just before the "WHOOOOAAA!"
