Billy Joel is a great singer songwriter & composer from the 70's-90's. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. His first single was "Piano Man" released in 1973. My favorite album is the "Stranger" album. It has a lot of great songs such as "Just The Way You Are", "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant", "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)", "Only The Good Die Young", "She's Always A Woman" etc.

Some of his best are right there, but since I live in Upstate New York, New York State of mind is easily my favorite with my added bias. Without that bias, it's still top 3 for me

I will say without a doubt Billy Joel has the biggest highs but also the lowest lows. I challenge you to listen to entire albums (other than greatest hits and The Stranger). He has a LOT of realllllly bad and mediocre songs. That being said he has some of the best songs of all times.

@@soocool78 To each his own, soocool78, but I could put on An Innocent Man, 52nd Street, Songs in the Attic, or Piano Man and play it all day long. Back in the 80s, on long road trips with the kids, I often did just that with the old 8-track tapes. The kids didn't complain - they sang along. There is nothing to any of these albums (nor The Stranger) that could possibly be called a "low" IMHO.

@@spcoon What are you talking about? He's a worldwide superstar, but he's FROM Long Island. Where did I say he stayed there and made his mark there? Not sure why you're not understanding. No person says he's from the "tri state". You're from one state. Maybe a storm hits the tri state, but you never hear people saying, "I'm from the tri state area". They say precisely where they're from, not a general region. 🤣

Billy is one of the greats . This live version is perfect, much different than the album version, verrrrrry jazzy. I think I read somewhere that he was doing his best Ray Charles impression while singing this version. He idolizes Ray Charles. Billy named his daughter Alexa Ray after Ray Charles. Also, he does a duet with Ray Charles called Me and My Baby Grand that is just awesome. The live version of that song definitely deserves a spot on your radar for a review Polo. This was a great suggestion. 🔥

@@zippymacadoo6336 And to be clear, Billy Joel grew up on LI, so he’s a suburban kid - thus, “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” is totally LI. But like many of us who were born in the city, in his generation, grew up on LI, then moved back to NYC, our major romance is with the city. Of course, he didn’t get priced out of it like I did, but I’ll always be a New Yorker.

I was fortunate to speak with Billy Joel after his concert. He is just a regular guy: he's so personable & humble. He studied classical music as a kid. He once said when he was overseas playing a concert, the audience didn't seem to really know who he was & what he did, so, he sat down at his piano & played a classical song. The audience erupted into cheers & clapping. His saxophone players have always been terrific. At his concert, we gave his sax player a Standing O after his solo. Joel jumped on his piano & started clapping along with us. He told the sax player, "That's for you; keep playing." He didn't jump off his piano for 10 minutes while the sax player continued to play. When I get homesick for NYC, I listen to this song on a loop until I feel better.

Just imagine if all the greatness we can access, so many years after the moment it happened, was lost to time in that moment in the 70s, in the 30s, in the 90s, the 80s, the 60s, 50s, 40s. Without recorded media, only the people in that room on that night would have experienced that performance. We are extremely fortunate for this wealth of culture.

I was an architectural designer/draftsman in the early 90s. I worked in an old railroad building. I heard someone playing piano, beautifully. Turns out Billy Joel's office was above mine!!! Loved drafting and to Billy playing piano. Dream job. I met the bass player, Howie, from his first band "The Hassles". He was going on tour with "Ram Jam". Yeah, the "Black Betty" band. I hung out with a few of them in the 70s. My favorite Billy Joel album is "Turnstiles".

Billy Joel has written many, many great songs, every one of them unique and not limited to any particular style. Anything you listen to will be incredible.

Polo, I've been following a lot of your videos, but haven't seen all of them. But I see in the chat that this may be the first time you've ever reacted to Billy Joel. I wonder how he's escaped your notice. Check out further suggestions for his music as put forth in the chat by your followers. You could spend quite a long time just on his hits. My personal recommendation would be River of Dreams (the official video).

So many hits. So many different styles. He's thinking Billy's a jazz musician, but he was right when he called him, "a Jack of all trades" and doesn't even know why.

He had a great documentary concert at Shea Stadium before it closed for good. Fantastic show...and Paul McCartney joined in at end. He was driven by same guy who drove the Beatles when they played NY back then..amazing!

I have been lucky enough to see Billy at MSG, once from the front row. This is one of my favorites as I love NYC and this is Billy's love song to NYC. I wanted to see him one more time at MSG, but when they announced that his residency at MSG will end in July 2024 the ticket prices went thru the roof. A front row ticket I had just a few years ago is now about 10 times more. By the end Billy will have played 150 sold out shows in the last 10 years at MSG. It was a once/twice in a lifetime experience.

Those of you who saw him live know his last remark of the night was always; “Have a great night, and don’t take shit from anyone!” Billy “closed out” Shea Stadium as only he can. The next morning contractors began tearing it down. He IS NYC. 🤘😎

There are a holy trinity of piano playing singer songwriters. For me Billy Joel Elton John / Bernie Taupin and Bruce Hornsby are exactly that Billy’s music and his words will still be being played in generations to come because it’s both timeless and unforgettable.

Grew up on Long Island. He'd show up at bars in the Hamptons and just sit and play and everyone would just start singing along. No one mobbing him. Just like he was one of the crowd. So nice and polite too! Great times! Captain Jack is a favorite!

His music never gets old. Many of his songs have been used in movies. Sax player sounds like Wiseberg.

There's a reason he's STILL selling out Madison Square Garden every month (going on like 90 shows in 10 years.) He's not my favorite, but he is an undisputed icon, and incredible singer/player/songwriter. And yeah, it gets smelly here in some parts, but despite all its many problems it's the greatest city in the world. Check out Simon and Garfunkel's "A Heart in New York" live from the '81 Central Park performance!
