This was shot in one take. Let that sink in for a moment. The Nicholas brother were self taught tappers. Cab was one of the greatest performers and talent this planet has ever witnessed. Let's also realize this was shot in the 40"s. Let that sink in also. This is one of the most epic scenes ever recorded!

Like hell it was. If you cannot see the obvious edits, then you really don't know anything about movie making. Even if the brothers were capable of keeping up that level of energy for the length of that song, the cameras (which in 1943 were huge!) had to be moved for those closeups and to that adjoining stage. No, sorry. This is an amazing performance regardless. It doesn't need lies to embellish it.

Great reaction.. FYI.. Cab Calloway was legendary! Terrific showman, formed his own first class band when he was in his 20's! they travelled and performed everywhere! The Nicholas Brothers also were legendary performers starting out at a very young age, their parents made sure they only performed in first class places, they even had their own Chauffeur! quite a feet for Afro Americans in the 1930's! there is a documentary on their life! Amazingly gifted performers! may they all R.I.P.!

In my opinion, and others, also, Cab Calloway was the greatest big band leader of all time. Fabulous dancer, fabulous singer, and great with JIVE TALK. He even wrote a book on it. He also did the moonwalk decades before Michael Jackson. Here he is mixing Jive with scat. The Nicholas Brothers were the greatest tap dancers in the world. Another great Nicholas Brothers performance is the last half of Chattanooga Choo Choo with Dorothy Dandridge. She is a knock-out, and very sexy.

They did not have formal dance training! Performed from beginning to end: One time! They just watched folks and added their own moves. Neither had hip or knee surgery. Fayard, (taller one -- (1914 - 2006.--stroke) Harold (short one) -- (1921 - 2000 -- heart attack) Fred Astaire once told the brothers that this dance number was the greatest movie musical sequence he had ever seen! No one can do this today. Computer-generated jumps would have to be made. (side note) I don't know if you've ever watched 'Good Times' (James and Florida Evans). The orchestra conductor, Cab Calloway, is the man said to had been Ja'Net DuBois' father. She played Wilona Woods on the show. She did not tell anyone because she wanted to make a name for herself, and not be known as his daughter.

One word describes the Nicholas brothers regards those spits and that is LIMBER! They were self taught masters of tap and I will say the only dancers and gymnasts are anywhere near that limber because they need to be for their profession. Great big band jazz, scat singing and masterful dancing this clip had it all!

Love this. Cab Calloway was such an entertainer. This is big band/swing music. Its awesome. It gets you moving. You should react to couples swing dancing...bet no one nowadays could do it. Fred Astaire was once quoted as saying this was the best dance routine ever recorded on film. He felt his talent could never even hold a candle to theirs, and he was the most famous dancer in history. The Nicholas Brothers deserve a lot more recognition than they get. And most of all....no slutty stage performance to hide the fact that some entertainers have no talent.

Cab Calloway was the Prince of his era. Check out his records and his performances. The Nicholas Brothers were incredible athletic dancers so they were in great shape and super flexible. What you saw was also in their act.

This would have been reminiscent of the recently closed (1922-1940) Cotton Club in Harlem. Cab Calloway led the house band for much of those years. He took over from Duke Ellington. According to the Britannica article other performers who were featured at the Cotton Club included Louis Armstrong, Lena Horne, Bojangles Robinson and the Nicholas Brothers. So if you wanted to set a movie in an edgy nightlub in 1943, you hire Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers to reproduce one of the acts from the Cotton Club. My mother saw Calloway perform at Niagara Falls in 1948 when she was in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Her base was about three hours north but a bunch of them got a weekend pass so they could go dancing.

Staged?? Bruh nah nothing staged back then yes from the movie stormy weather. They did that in one take because they ran out of money to do more than one takes. So they had to do it right the first time. Performers gave it their all. Cab Calloway was considered the highest paid black entertainer at that time. Which was unheard of the nicholas brothers was a tap dancing duo. In other movies they have sang before. The jumpin jive was style of high energy dance in the 40s.
