@@Dinnerthedaythebanksareopen Hi Valerie, yes I grew up in the 70s. I'm Gen-X, coming on 57 years old in June, Lord willing. I can't speak for everyone else, but me and my household loved Candi Staton! I was a little girl at the time, but I would hear her music constantly on the radio. Like I said in another comment, my big sis loved her music, and we'd all sing along to "Young Hearts Run Free"! ☺ I agree, I think more people should acknowledge her and her contributions to music. She doesn't get near the attention here on youtube that she deserves! I followed her career off and on, she was Candi Staton-Sussewell I believe at the time she gave her heart to the Lord. I remember hearing her tell her story and struggles with alcoholism and her Husband's drug addiction on Christian tv, back in the 90s, and it was both riveting and compelling!

@@earth2kosmickitty That makes perfect sense. I’m 23 but grew up listening to lots of 70s & 60s music. I was curious because Candi, Linda Clifford, The Stylistics & Love Unlimited never get mentioned even though they obviously shaped the sound of the 70s

@@Dinnerthedaythebanksareopen Oh wow, u have amazing musical taste and sound like an "Old soul" like me. 🥰My first exposure to music was of course through my parents. They were known as the "Silent Generation". I basically cut my teeth on Blues, R&B, Jazz, etc. They played everything from Nat King Cole to Al Green. I love the Stylistics, and yes, I agree 100 that these artists and others helped shape the sound of the 70s! And yes, Linda Clifford should get more mention, as well as Love Unlimited, loved them!!! I might also give an honorable mention to Randy Crawford. She was/is also an amazing musical treasure that should be explored by more reactors!

I was a child when this song debuted, it's message was still loud and clear: You get one life - never put anyone or anything above your own well-being! Take care of yourself, first! what profound lyrics, about woman's dignity and breaking free from life struggles: She says "my mind must be free to learn all I can about me", "self preservation is what's really going on today"; "I'm going to love me for the rest of my days"...wow true today and always.

Disco is just a sub-genre of Rhythm & Blues and so are soul, funk, New Jack Swing, house, Latin Freestyle, Latin soul, electrofunk, zydeco, neo soul, adult R&B, southern soul, soul jazz, smooth jazz, acid jazz, Chicago soul, etc. R&B itself developed from Black gospel/spirituals and many of the early R&B/soul singers either started in gospel or sang in church. Some early R&B (& rock n roll too) songs were originally gospel songs with the words changed to secular topics. Thomas A Dorsey, who is considered to be the "father of gospel", also wrote blues songs. Most of these genre titles were made up by the record labels, radio DJs, or the music press for marketing reasons. They were not usually made up by the artists themselves. Miles Davis & Nina Simone did not like the word "jazz", and Hall & Oates have said in interviews they hated the title "blue eyed soul". At one time, any music by Black artists was officially called "race music" and "country & western" was originally called "hillbilly" by the labels.

Yeah, I think I would put this in the genre of disco, such a great song from a great voice, I’ve always loved it. It almost has a “beach music” vibe too (Carolina folks know 😉). I’ll have to look back to check, but if you guys haven’t done Thelma Houston’s “Don’t Leave Me This Way”, please add it to the to-do list. Another R&B/disco song from a powerhouse voice! And you can’t help but move with that one either.

So much of the pre-Disco 1970s R&B was considered 'dance music' and was played in dance clubs, both gay and straight, across the country. This song from Candi Staton, was often played in the gay dance clubs of the 1970s. The first time I heard it was in a dance club in Seattle called Shelly's Leg. This song was used in the movie Romeo and Juliet (DiCaprio, Danes, Leguizamo). I was 16 so this was the version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet shown in English class at school, for the 90’s generation. Romeo and Juliet represented that Young Love being encouraged, despite the unaccepting and unacceptable society. Also touching on the acceptance of cross dressing, rainbow and culturally pushed elements throughout (gun violence, racial, generational, etc) leading to mental illness and self harm. It changed the way that I ear the full song. The full song is more about teaching your kids not to fall into life altering traps and staying there, want more for your life than mediocre, live your life as if the Young Love you feel is for yourself and your future, with Hope, instead of regret.

I love this song, it brings back powerful memories of teenage years and first experiences. This is a super popular classic Disco hit [there are many more to look forward to]; some of the slower more soulful disco was played at the end of the night for smooching. - 'R&B' meant something very different in the 70's - rock versions of blues imports from the 60's and early 70's, like early Led Zeppelin at it's best, but more commonly associated with amateur turgid pub bands until punk put a stop to it.

From the long hot summer of ‘76. I remember it well. Another great Candi Staton track is her cover of the Bee Gees’ Nights on Broadway

I can't hear anything by Candi without thinking of the hit she had with "He Called Me Baby" a song so good that a group called One Eskimo wrote a song named "Candi" about her and He Called Me Baby. Both are great songs but done as a set (hers first) it's spectacular.
