Cold Chisles attitude towards that record company reminds me of Pink's attitude toward the record executives who told her she needed to sound more like Brittany Spears.

Pink is well loved in Australia. What a great rock chick. She is down to earth as well, which we love in Australia. Our kinda person. I am glad she is like she is. Why do they want everyone to be the same, hey?

I searched the story behind this song and some of what came up is this: The song “You Got Nothing I Want” by the Australian rock band Cold Chisel was written in response to the band's treatment by their American record label, Elektra: Background The song was written by singer Jimmy Barnes after a frustrating visit to the United States where Elektra refused to promote the band or their album East. Barnes specifically targeted Marty Schwartz, the label's promotion manager at the time.

There are a lot of very good Aus and NZ bands and singers that USA record executives didn’t understand, dismissed or wanted them to change and America missed. With that attitude the bands would have given them the finger and said f you we will just go home and be appreciated.

The story told by Chisel is that Atlantic Record executive missed seeing their show due to having to go to a DJ’s dog’s party. It disappointed the boys, who wanted him to see their live act, which we all know is brilliant. He did not see it, arriving after it had just finished and he offered Jimmy a substance and told him not to tell the others about. Jimmy was furious so he went to the crowd and gave it to them. Not something a band would do regularly. So they returned to Oz. Whilst Don, the brilliant lyricist, and on keys here (weren’t they so good) wrote a lot of songs, this one was written by Jimmy, and boy did he sing it with feeling. Mighty fine if you ask me. Being able to play music well live was everything to this band. Merry Christmas Mike.

What Chisel should have done was to go back to their roots - buy a $1,000 ex-bread van and just dropped in and played the dive bars, what we call Pubs over here. They are nothing fancy, have a bar, basic food court serving wholesome country style meals, and a beer garden. Put on a free show, or charge them just the price to get a feed and enough fuel money to get the 100 miles to the next bar, play for food and a bed at the next bar. Within 2 or 3 months Chisel would have found enough followers by word of mouth that it would have got them the start they deserved. Unfortunately they were already tired from doing that every week back home, and didn't have the energy to live that rough again, and who could blame them, when they already had such a loyal base at home.

Legend has it that an American record exec put off a meeting with Jimmy and Ian to attend a funeral. They thought that was fair enough until they found out it was for a dog and not even his own dog. You might be able to imagine how Jimmy would react to that.

must be 40 years ago or more American music industry made it hard to break into the states to protect their local talent (as is they had to) and ol 55 was in talks with happy days to do a number of shows because their music fitted the time period but they went with Suzi Quatro, it seems the English had no problem breaking into the USA music scene for some reason,
