People don't talk about just how big Debbie was in her heyday. As someone else said below, she WAS the Taylor Swift of her generation. Back then, it was almost unheard of for a teenager to write, produce, and sing her own music. She sold out concert after concert, and while she eventually dropped from the charts, she stayed involved in music and in Broadway and found very good success. "People don't understand what Debbie Gibson went through because, unlike many of the later female singers who were teenagers, Debbie Gibson had to deal with an industry completely controlled by adult men who considered a 15 or 16-year-old girl as a child. Debbie Gibson had to do everything from the scratch; she composed the music for her own songs, wrote the lyrics, and also produced her own songs, taking part in all the marketing, advertising, and image-building aspects of herself in a thoroughly professional manner, almost becoming an extremely perfectionist person. Her contemporary competitor, Tiffany, couldn't hold a candle to her, as Tiffany basically focused on covering famous songs from the past, classics from the Beatles and other groups from the 50s and 60s. Their successors who emerged in the late 90s were also teenagers, but they were really created by big show business companies, almost as if they themselves were money-generating corporations. Singers like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, among others, were the creation of adults who learned from Debbie Gibson how a teenage pop star should be. For me, it's truly admirable how Debbie Gibson, at just 16 years old, composed the music and lyrics of her songs, in addition to producing them. She filmed music videos, embarked on massive tours across the United States, filling stadiums, and yet she managed to graduate from high school with honors.

I had to double-check to make sure - this is your first Debbie G song! I'd venture that no other female 80s teenage singers' posters graced as many tweens' walls as Debbie Gibson and Tiffany (whom you've already reacted to). Debbie's start shot high right from the start, hitting the Top 5 with her first four hits - "Only in My Dreams", "Shake Your Love", "Out of the Blue", and "Foolish Beat". This song, and "Foolish Beat", were both #1 hits. She's now 52, and I'm happy to say, still active. She's been on Broadway, including playing Sandy in Grease!

Can you believe that, just because she was a teenager when she hit the charts, he music - including this beautiful song - was classified as "bubblegum pop." This was considered a derogatory term for music that would appeal to only teen and pre-teen girls. The critics completely ignored the quality of her voice, as well as the talent and smarts it took to not only write this song, but also to produce it and make all the arrangements. Those dismissive critics were idiots. If you want to hear more from Debbie, especially something with a "big moment," check out her song "Electric Youth."

The song was written by Gibson in late 1987 and published by Creative Bloc Music, Ltd. and Deborah Ann's Music in early 1988,[citation needed] with the rights eventually administered by the Music Sales Corporation (ASCAP). A beta arrangement had been performed on the Out of the Blue Tour. Released on January 6, 1989, "Lost in Your Eyes" debuted at No. 42 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 on the week of January 21. On March 4, the ballad climbed to number one and remained there for three weeks, becoming her most successful single and her fifth and last top 10 hit. In Canada, it also reached number one for three weeks, and outside North America, "Lost in Your Eyes" experienced moderate chart success, reaching number seven in Australia and the top 40 in Belgium, Ireland, Spain and the United Kingdom. One variant mixed from the original multitrack, "Lost in Your Eyes" (Piano and Vocal Mix/3:34), was only available in Europe as Track 3 of the CD3 release
