Depeche Mode are SO underrated for their vocals. Dave Gahan's baritone is so sexy, and Martin Gore's vibrato is heartfelt and lush. They also sound just as good singing live as they do recorded. I'm always surprised how few people mention this.

this is because Alan Wilder's musical talent is soooo good that it is above or on par Dave's fantastic vocals. Gore's vocals I actually like as much. His soft vibrato in Somebody and Question of Lust is amazing. Wished he'd sing more.

People often wonder as they are so much electric-oriented, but that sound you wondered about that panned across the ears that when "verrrrrrmmmmm" dropping in tone is a guitar doing that "duh-dum, duh-duh, duh-duh dummmm" with the end note/chord sliding down and panning across, toned to fit the rest of the song's sound so it gives a synth-feel. It's another where they started mixing Martin's guitar playing into the songs, but still keeping it more back in the mix as opposed to songs like Personal Jesus and such where it's placed clearly and out front. Loved the 80s for the heavy experimentation and genre cross-overs that happened then and formed so much of current sounds/genres - it's nice to hear the occasional artist now that really takes those risks/playfulness with their work, too, while still sounding like it's them and not putting out something not fitting them. If you've not hit them/him, I'd suggest Aesthetic Perfection for an independent artist who is inspired by the industrial, new wave, synth-pop, metal mix depending on which song but also each (so far that i've heard, I'm working my way through as a new fan) but reliably still feels like him each song. For something heavy/industrial-electronica I'd suggest Gods and Gold. For something lighter/poppier/synth side I'd suggest Big Bad Wolf or Never Enough. More DM I'd suggest is the Only When I Lose Myself - Live at Launch, Vienna where Martin sings the live (Dave sings on the album, if memory serves) and you don't have to worry about copyright block. For newer work of theirs the audio-only so no copyright block is the song Soothe My Soul with Dave as lead.

Depeche Mode started in 1980. This album Violator, which also contains “Personal Jesus” and “Enjoy the Silence” which are also considered part of DM’s signature songs list, came out in 1991. They’re still going. David Gahan, Martin Gore and Andy Fletcher have been doing this together since 1980. Gahan is the vocalist, Martin Gore is the guitarist and Andy is the keyboardist. Just three dudes from Basildon, England not afraid to try new sounds and change styles between albums.

Depeche mode was founed in 1980, by Vince Clark( later Yazoo, Erasure) Martin Gore, Andy Fletcher and Dave Gahan (Lead singer). First single was Dreaming of me, it was released Feb. 1981 Debut album, is Speak and Spell. Okt. 1981. Just can't get enough, is the biggest hit, form this record, and still well known. Vince Clark was the prime songwriter, on this record. He left after the first record. Martin Gore took over songwriting , and in came Alan Wilder, (officially member in 1983, on the album Construction time again. They are a very innovative band. Changing sound an style on every new record. This song is from the album Violator, from 1990(their best record ) witch also includes Enjoy the Silence, and Personal Jesus. Alan Wilder, sadly left the Band in 1995. He had a huge impact on Depeche mode's style and sound. Thier music, is mainely made with synthezisers, and samplers. Depeche mode's best music period 1981 - 1993. Boy you have a long way to go, if want to go trough thier music. But it is worth it.

“Personal Jesus” is one of my favs. Depeche Mode is classified as electronic music, synth pop, or new wave. They’re from Essex, England and started to play together in 1980. The group is: Dave Ghana - lead vocals, co-songwriting) Martin Gore - (keyboards, guitar, co-lead vocals and main songwriting) Andy Fletcher (keyboards) Former Members: Vince Clark - composer, songwriter, and a previous member who went on to form another awesome, synth pop band, Erasure. Depeche Mode’s first album, Spark and Spell, was released in 1981. One of the most popular songs from that album was “Just Can’t Get Enough.” “Policy of Truth,” released on May 7, 1990 is a song on the Violator album. This is their only song to chart higher on Billboard Hot 100 in America than in Britain. Their latest album, Spirit, was released in 2017 with “Where’s The Revolution” being one of the best sellers. Depeche Mode was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020.

Oh and Depeche Mode started in the early 80's. Original band member was Vince Clarke who moved on to start Erasure. His influence on early Depeche Mode is very noticeable because they were a lot more light and upbeat. Of course they were much younger too. The band came to its own in the mid-80's with their darker synthetic-pop sound. The peak of their music/fame was when Violator (the album this song is from) came out in 1989. That was peak Depeche Mode. The lead singer, Dave Gahan however was dealing with some demons and the band became even darker. Songs of Faith and Devotion in the early 90's was unlike other DM albums and just raw and became a favorite for many of the faithful. After that album, band member Alan Wilder left the band due to feeling unappreciated and so the sound of the band changed a little since then as well. They are not wha they used to be but their later albums had some good songs too.

"Policy of Truth" made the US top twenty in 1990. The song seems somewhat like a reflection on the two adages "Honesty is the best policy" and "The truth will set you free", if not others I fail to recall at the moment. The lyrics conclude "Hide what you have to hide \ And tell what you have to tell" and that makes sense. White lies are often necessary to smooth over day to day interactions with other people, but big truths are better spoken than left hidden away to fester and corrode. Depeche Mode always reminds me of high school. "People Are People" (1984), "Master and Servant" (1984), "Everything Counts" (1983), and "Just Can't Get Enough" (1981) were a few of their hits during my school days. "Never Let Me Down Again" (1987) arrived years later. It sounds great in the car driving fast down the freeway in the summer with the windows rolled down. The piano in that one bounces between speakers in the bridge as some of the violins and synths do in later bridges and the backing vocals in the fade out.

I think “Enjoy the Silence” was the first Depeche Mode song you reacted to. This is from the same album as that (“Violator”). Released in 1990, but the band started in 1980. “Enjoy the Silence” was the second single released from the album and I believe the biggest hit. “Policy of Truth” was the third single released if I’m not mistaken. “Personal Jesus” had been released as the first single in the second half of 1989 before the album was available.

I love "In your room". They played a great version at Wembley. And the bass...!

Three words: 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝟭𝟬𝟭. That's the live album from their sold-out 1988 show at the Rose Bowl. Pick any song from it, you won't be disappointed.

It’s a ridiculously good album. It’s all this, Personal Jesus, etc, on one great album. But there is a ton of earlier stuff, like Master & Servant, Never Let Me Down Again, and so many others. But yes - welcome to why DM was a mainstay in clubs for over a decade. You just had to move to this. Lead singer: Dave Gahan. (Gah-han, I think?) But Martin Gore is the skinnier guy you see a lot (especially in People are People) and he was key to a lot of the sound and songwriting. They were/are a great team.

If you like the beat to this song. You should react to World in my eyes by Depech Mode.

I’m loving how you’re realising that they have so many grooves. You don’t think a band with 3 synth players (back then) and programmed drums would be so groovy but it totally is. This was a big hit in the US too. This is from 1990 l, People Are People was from 1984. They had such a golden run of albums and hits.

I think it helps that there are some blues influences. It really does add a lot of depth snd soul.
