DICE is all about addressing a social problem in Japan, where young people complete their education and then lock themselves away in fear of failure. The lyrics are all about finding one's motivation and breaking free of self doubt.

@@ShadeReactsLive I wrote a text file on this, so I'll post it here to further explain. The song's basically about taking risks, seizing opportunities, putting in the work to get the rewards. Roll the dice. Take your shot. The doll is just a doll. It's harmless - in fact, that's kind of the point. The doll is a simulated person, it's safe. The girl is blindfolded, in the dark, holding the doll for comfort. She's sheltered. At the end of the video the girl abandons the doll, lifts up the blindfold, steps into a blinding light that represents the uncertainty and opportunity that she's been hiding from. This song is a call to arms. In Japan they have a sub-culture of shut-ins, people who are either unemployed or under employed who basically won't move out on their own. They stay in their parent/grandparent's home basically playing with dolls or video games, instead of getting out and living life and trying to better themselves. This song is calling them out. Challenging them, "Are you gonna stay in there playing with DOLLLLLLLLLS like a little kid? Or are you going to stand up take off the blindfold, leave the dolls and games behind and step out into the real world?" At the end of the video, the girl puts down the doll, takes off the blindfold and steps into the light. It's called Hikikomori in Japan and is defined as: "pulling inward, being confined", also known as severe social withdrawal, is total withdrawal from society and seeking extreme degrees of social isolation and confinement. Hikikomori refers to both the phenomenon in general and the recluses themselves. The concept is primarily recognized only in Japan, although similar concepts exist in other languages and cultures. Hikikomori have been described as loners or "modern-day hermits". Estimates suggest that half a million Japanese youths have become social recluses, as well as more than half a million middle-aged individuals. - Definition from Wikipedia

Another of my text files for you. About the bass forward sound of Band-Maid When the band started, Miku the founder and singer, could not play guitar. Their management wanted a second guitar for "Optics". They didn't want to add another member to the band, and Saiki the new Co-Lead singer refused to carry a guitar. So Miku said that she would do it. At first all she did was hold the guitar and mime playing it, until Akane told her of she was going to hold it she needed to learn how to play it. So Kanami the lead guitarist started to teach her how to play. The problem was, she wasn't good enough at the time to fill in the music where the rhythm guitar is supposed to be. So MISA the bassist was asked to step up and fill in that part of the music. While normally the bass would be tied in with drums, MISA was now free to become a Lead Instrument. While Miku would fill in the bass parts, tying in to the drums. And for awhile, that was how it left. However, Miku was forced by Kanami to become a GOOD rhythm guitarist. Not by actually making her do things, merely by setting an example. Kanami constantly practices and is always trying to learn new techniques, just like MISA and Akane do. So Miku couldn't say that it was too hard. So she applied herself, and has become a very accomplished rhythm guitarist. Today, she does some lead riffs, that were originally done by Kanami, so that Kanami can add more embellishments to their music. But even now. MISA and her bass forward playing has become a central part of the Band Maid Sound. So I doubt they ever change it. I have several more files about the Ladies I post as needed.

Another great reaction from you to Band-Maid in the books, awesome work, Shade! It's just indicative of the quality of their work that this song used to get suggested constantly as a top tier song for reactors when it was new, and then during Covid and the online Okyujis the live got recommended a ton... but... well... there are a LOT more songs that are just this good now. Few Madiacs would say that this isn't a great song, I would bet... but there are soooo many other great songs that they've put out since then!

One thing that I love from Band-Maid is that they usually change riffs from verse 1 to verse 2. And that off-tempo beat right before the chorus is so epic, with the accents accompaining Saiki on lyrics. This is awesome. If only they return to Europe this year... Some say this is the Maids commentary on the social phenomenon of Hikikomori. It also follows right along with thee. Thos of banmaid i.e. Seize the day, Never give up, Push Forward to the Unseen World/the Future/ World Domination. There is no quit. Need the whip? Need the candy? This is my go to song for introducing new listeners to band maid. Great rock, catchy, just that perfect mix of old and new rock.

Day of Maid is a pun. Written Japanese uses modified Chinese characters (kanji), which have multiple ways to read them, and the character for the number 10 (十) can be read as tou, and in Japanese, to (と) and do (ど) are closely related (do just has that little quotation mark-looking thing that turns a T sound into a D sound). So May 10 is convolutedly May Do or meido (メイド) or Maid. So May 10th is the day of maid, and they always do something special. Japanese has a pretty small number of possible syllables (technically moras), so you end up with a lot of homophones, which has the side effect of making puns a big part of Japanese humor. And Miku loves word play. If you’ve seen reference to her being an 810 year old pigeon, 810 comes from 8 (hachi) and 10 (tou) -> hato = pigeon.

The song is a nod to the Japanese phenomena of hikikomori or shut-ins. People who lock themselves away from society. It happens everywhere but it is a big problem in Japan. The band are saying basically 'get out there, roll the dice, live life'. At the end of the MV the girl takes off her blindfold and walks into the light. This live video was for J-LOD, a Japanese government programme to help artistes during the covid lockdowns because they couldn't tour. The government gave grants to produce a video. One of the grant stipulations was it has to be 5 minutes long or more, hence two songs. It's from a full livestream concert during covid - so no audience. A rare case of the MV being better in my opinion. May 10th is literally Maids Day in Japan. Of course the ladies celebrate it every year.

“Candy or the whip” Sure, the actual explanation is innocent and simple, but don’t underestimate Miku. She works closely with her translators. She puts English where it matters. She rhymes Japanese and English words. She’s poetic, cryptic, and sometimes even intentionally meaningless. She knows what she’s doing.

J-LOD was a Japanese government initiative to help artists through the covid lockdowns. They gave grants to artistes to put out video's of their work. One of the stipulations was that the video's must be 5 minutes or longer in duration. Band-Maid have no 5 minute songs so they put out two songs on each J-LOD video. Both of these tracks were taken Band-Maids online concert livestreamed on May 10th 2021. Another great J-LOD video the Maids put out was "Manners" & "Black Hole" - it's worth checking out! 😎🤘

Great réaction When you see 2 songs live in row generally, it was recorded during the pandemic, BAND MAID make some livestream form the fans block at home and couldn't come to concert ( at this period no concert where unable by the Japonese Gouvernement). Now you can make a video for LOVEBITES with the song ENCHAINED ( the MV was able since last summer) on the 4 of February they've released the live version of the song. Less complex, simpler than most Band-Maid songs but a banger of a song. And I especially love the lyrics. The sad thing is so many nuances are lost in translation. It's like you really have to decipher what Miku is getting at, I'm saying this as a Japanese, and I sort of grasping the message with the help of MV.

The old geezer I am has been drinking as much water as possible before going to bed (especially after drinking alcohol) and kept a bottle of more water by the bed to drink from whenever I wake up and to finish it before getting out of bed. Totally understandable how some people might interpret it that way. However I started referring to her as a “vampire” from the first video I ever watched of theirs before I knew about her teeth.
