Just for clarification, the "mommy" tirade isn't actually his mother. Mommy is society. He's spoken about it in interviews numerous times.

I legit thought it was about abuse ("the sickness") and how it can be passed down to your kids. Thanks for the clarification
@KerryNelsonART Жыл бұрын
David has used the "mother" concept of society beating its children into compliance in a number of songs, so, the "mother society" idea in this song isn't just an attempt to be more socially acceptable. Check out "A Welcome Burden".
@VadulTharys Жыл бұрын
@@cindyshawver9986 In interviews he stated his mother was always a wonderful woman, he was a bad son, but his main issues were with any authority figure like his father teachers ect. He comes from a strict Jewish family and rebelled at a young age, but has returned to his faith and has a great relationship with his family now. Though he was clear there were quite a few years it was not good but that as he says was his rebelling and his drug use.
@gabrielstratton17752 жыл бұрын
The "mommy" part is supposed to make you uncomfortable. It is designed to make you feel angry, because anger is "the sickness." Also Draiman has said that this is not a real family situation, his family was very loving. It is a metaphor for negative societal and government organizations keeping you down through acts or threats of violence

The part of the song about his mother is actually not about his literal mother. It’s a metaphor for how society tries to make you conform and that force feels abusive. His rage is him trying to rebel against society trying to make him conform to what they want him to be instead of what he wants to be.
@psychosocial19172 жыл бұрын
David Draiman has an unbelievable voice range. He does heavy to chill like Corey Taylor. Awesome in person as well. The intro kinda came by accident while warming up and messing around in the studio. He did the OH AH AH AH AH and they liked it so they put it in the song making it EPIC!!!

So glad you did the full version and not the radio friendly one like other reaction channels have done. Just to support what others have said, the mummy bit is about the mother society and and unruly rebellious child I.e. anyone challenging expectations and norms…. It’s not to be taken literally as the band have said repeatedly…..

David Draiman (vocals) of Disturbed said he writes very cryptic lyrics... he knows what to do vocally to grab your attention for sure 😂 The first Disturbed album 'The Sickness' in 2000 really set the stage for the band's next 2 decades in the music business...

This song is about how society treats people who are "different." A lot of people think they are "sick" and "wrong" and want nothing to do with them. In the middle of the song, lead singer David Draiman acts out a skit where he is being abused by his mother (not in the radio version). Finally, he builds up enough courage and hits her right back. This is used to symbolize how "mother society" abuses "her" children for not being the way "she" thinks they should. "She" keeps doing it until "her" children get sick of it and are so angry with her and themselves they go out and get revenge for it, most likely by killing the people that hurt them ("here it comes, get ready to die!") A good example of this would be the school shootings that go on around the country. Getting "Down With The Sickness" means accepting people for who they are so we can all function better.

My favorite song by one of my favorite bands. Glad you checked it out. Many other comments have already told you what the lyrics really pertain to so I won’t rehash them. Loved both your reactions. Before the end verse you’d both really started digging the song I think, but then your expressions completely changed…hilarious! I felt similar the first time I heard it. Someone has suggested you react to Daddy by Korn. Korn is one of my favorite bands also, but that song, based on Jonathan Davis’ true experience, is heart-wrenching. The topic of the entire song is horrible but the end of the song is really devastating. A lot of people can’t take it so be prepared if you decide to check it out. Other Disturbed songs I would suggest are Stricken, The Game, Stupefy, and 10,000 Fists.
@rmcclain1242 жыл бұрын
...And now you've seen the extremes of Disturbed. The rest of their music fills all the space in between. Say what you will, but that band is not afraid to dig into serious topics. Try "The Vengeful One" and "The Light".

The lead singer, David Draiman, says about the breakdown "I’m really talking about the conflict between the mother culture of society, who’s beating down the child yearning for independence and individuality, and the submission of the child. The tragic part is just how that little section ends up making my poor, sweet mother feel," he told Billboard in 2020. "It's not like my mom actually beat the hell out of me when I was a kid. The whole thing is an analogy, and a lot of people have used it as a direct interpretation for their own cathartic purposes, and so be it. I love that, but it's not what I wrote it as."

One time I picked up my then gf from her soccer practice while listening to it. She got into my car right when the "mommy" part started. She was immediately offended and shouted "What the hell are you listening to?!" I spent the next 20 minutes explaining to her it's not something I usually listen to. She dumped me a week later.
