The community became famous in 1973 when the Doobie Brothers' "China Grove" became a hit song. It was written and sung by The Doobies' Tom Johnston, who wrote it after passing through the town on his way to a concert in San Antonio, Texas. Despite its name and Johnston's lyrics, China Grove does not have a sizable Asian population; residents tracing their heritage to Asia number less than 0.1% of the population. Instead, the town got its name from a grove of chinaberry trees once located near the town's train depot, no longer extant.

Chinaberry is actually slang for a Persian Lilac Tree which originated in the Middle East and has nothing to do with China.

Tom Johnston sung lead on this song. He was the first lead singer with The Doobie Brothers along with Patrick Simmons. Tom got sick around the mid-seventies, they brought Michael McDonald in, then from that point on he sang lead for The Doobie Brothers. This song was made just before the mid-seventies. They were all great on the songs they sung.✌️

@@chrisa4695 Skunk came on two years before Tom got sick. Skunk did recommend Michael, because they'd been together in Steely Dan. Michael was only supposed to fill in during the tour they were on at the time Tom had to go to the hospital. But he stuck around because it all worked. Tom came back after a year, and the Doobies toured with both him and Michael. But then Tom didn't like the musical direction the rest of the band was liking with Michael, so Tom left again in the middle of making Livin' on the Fault Line album. So then they went on with Michael for a few years, but THEN the manager did stuff the really pissed off Pat Simmons, and he left and that was the end of the Doobies for a few years. Until, of course, they got back together....

The original band with Tom Johnston on guitar. My favorite vocalist in the band. Great guitar too. My band played this at lots of high school proms back in the 70s. "Listen to the music" was a giant hit. Also "Jesus is just alright" , " Long train running" and "Eyes of silver" are very cool. They had two drummers and the bass player had a very interesting style. A mix of influences .A major hitmaking band.

Yeah, Michael MacDonald always destroys bands ... not because he's not phenomenal, which he is, but once he joins a band, they are his band and sound like him, killing the original band that everybody loved instantly. The only band that got away with it is Toto, because they didn't feature him and used him for backups ... probably the reason he didn't stay with them too.

@StevesFunhouse
@StevesFunhouse 2 жыл бұрын
@@jimpaquette8007 Never said I didn't like or appreciate the man, just that he has a habit of destroying existing ones when he joins them. Also, the "number 1" spot and a quarter means nothing in the life of a band, especially 1 with such a huge catalog, pre-MM. I am realistic ... I KNOW they needed him (or someone) because of Tom Johnston's illness (while on tour) and his eventual departure, but him joining ... that officially killed the old sound, and I for one, really liked that older sound much, MUCH more ... because it was already great, it was a little unusual, and better represented the name, "Doobie Brothers". When he joined them, they might as well just gone ahead and renamed themselves, "The Michael MacDonald Band" right then and there, because it sounded no different than any other band he had been in, with the lone exception of Toto. That was probably due to the fact that he wasn't there long. Tom Johnston's departure

@@StevesFunhouse I get the fact that you prefer the pre MM days but to say he destroyed the Doobies is your opinion not a fact the man brought many hits to the band I don't think they would feel destroyed at all far from it!
@StevesFunhouse
@StevesFunhouse 2 жыл бұрын
@@jimpaquette8007 Apparently, you don't read so well. I didn't say he destroyed the Doobies. I said he officially killed their old sound, and that is fact !!! It makes no difference how many hits the New Michael MacDonald Band had after that ... because it was no LONGER the Doobie Brothers that the rest of us knew and loved. It also has nothing to do with how famous he (and they) made them after he joined, or whether they were more successful or not, but you can't deny that their sound changed. You are confusing financial success with musical greatness. Success is NOT a measure of greatness ... it can be, if all you're looking at is the revenue they generate, but it is NOT a measure of the greatness of a band any any point in their career. Again, I will say it ... close your eyes and listen to any band that MM was in, and TRY to see and/or identify where you can hear the band's influence, separate from MM. You can't, because not only is he the singer, but he also plays keyboards, in HIS style. The rest of the band may become rich, but they also become unknown. For that reason, people who LIKED the old DBs or, like me, thought their old sound was better, effectively knew the end of an era had come to pass, that ship had sailed and there would be no more "Doobie Brothers" as we knew it. That is fact !!! Finally, I never said they did bad music or never did any good music. I said, they were different ... the Doobie Brothers, in name only, and that I, like many, MANY others, thought so too. We ARE entitled to have our opinions, regardless of what you think, and I won't let anyone try to tell me what I like. or what I can think. Sorry if you can't respect that ...

Tom Johnston said in an interview he never heard of China Grove and had a dream one night about this strange town. Years later, while in a cab in Texas, the cabbie was asking Tom how he knew about China Grove Texas. Tom said "There really is a China Grove Texas?" The cabbie told him "Yes, and it really is just around San Antonio" Tom was stunned.

Yeah, he says in the song that it's "down around San Anton" (i.e. San Antonio, Texas), and it references a community of mostly Chinese people, like Chinatown in San Francisco, CA. So naturally, their Sherriff and police force would be Chinese people, who just may carry Samurai swords (probably only figuratively). However, it has been said that there really aren't a lot of Chinese people in the town, despite the song stating there were.

Great song! About China Grove: It's kind of an interesting story around that song, because it was written around a piano lick. The lyrics anyway, not the chords. The chords, I already had. I was pretty much a guy that would walk into the studio with a song but no words, except on a few occasions, and that was one of them. We went in and we cut the track, and when we brought (keyboardist) Billy Payne in from Little Feat - he played on a lot of our stuff - he played a lick (sings), and that just gave me this idea for this wacky sheriff that lived some place down in Texas, and the name of the town he was working in was China Grove. Source: Google.

That's not unusual. Many great songs start out with just a catchy beat laid down and they build around it and then figure out some words to sing to it. That's why there are plenty of songs that don't seem to make much sense in places. The audience usually doesn't care. They just love the way if makes them feel.

You know it is funny that somebody showed up at one of the practices where the group was rehearsing and they were all getting high and chilling smoking all these joints and just having a good old time and somebody said you are to call yourselves The Doobie Brothers because back in the day that's what they used to call marijuana cigarettes anyhow yeah we used to do a song by little band so we played this one song yeah it's a song called Road Angel yeah there's so many different styles that they played and different lineups and all sorts of things but it's all good when it comes to the doobies

From SongFacts: China Grove is a small town in Texas, about 10 miles from San Antonio in Bexar county. Did Doobie Brothers singer/guitarist Tom Johnston know this when he wrote the song? Sort of. Here's what he told Songfacts: "The words were written last, and they were made up around this whole idea of this wacky little town with a sheriff that had a Samurai Sword and all that sort of thing. The funny thing was that I found out in 1975 in a cab in Houston that there really was a China Grove, although what happened was in 1972 we were touring in Winnebagos, and we were driving into San Antonio. And there is a China Grove, Texas, right outside of San Antonio. I must have seen the sign and forgotten about it. And when I came up with the term 'China Grove,' I thought I was just making it up because of the words being about this crazy sheriff with a Samurai Sword."

That's the Doobie Brothers sound I grew up with. The album this song is from, The Captain and Me, doesn't have a bad song on it. One of those rare ones where you can listen to it from start to finish. The previous album, Toulouse Street, and the two albums after, entitled What Were Once Vices and Stampede are flawless also.

Of course they were talking about Texas at the beginning of the song you hear say down around San Anton and then at the end it's the lone Star State.

Michael Mcdonald is not in this band at this time. This is the original line up of the band. This song is off the album Tolouse Street or The Captain and Me. I do not remember which without looking it up. This group could rock in the early years and they still do. Michael Mcdonald did not join the band until the lead singer on this song, Tom Thomason, left the band for a while. These two albums were from the early 70s and Mike did not join the band until 1979, I think. It's been a while since I have refreshef my memory.

My favorite song by the Doobie Brothers is TAKE ME IN YOUR ARMS (AND ROCK ME). It rocks with raw energy and the vocals and message are on point!! But you should also give BLACK WATER a turn. I think you will like the intricate country feel. Also, I would suggest a song by War. It's called, SOUTHERN PART OF TEXAS. The album cut gives you the full experience without cutting out the essential music.

These guys always reminded me of Three Dog Night, and vice versa. Not that I'd ever mistake one band for the other, they each had a very unique sound, but a very similar vibe. I can imagine each band covering the other's hits, and doing them very well. Or....maybe I'm just nuts.
