This is a song that needs to be experienced via viewing its iconic video. As for the meaning of this song, taken from a website: On the VH1 show True Spin, the band explained this reference: Rio is a metaphor for America, and the song expressed their desire to succeed there. Which they did, after Hungry Like the Wolf peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in March 1983. On a sidenote, my first concert was with Duran Duran, at The Forum (Inglewood, CA), in 1984.
@tlt-ell1193 Жыл бұрын
Right on @leosarmiento4823!! I was there, too!! 😎 I ended up going both nights. My best friend & I bought tix for the 1st night, the day they went on sale (at the Wherehouse; remember them?) Meanwhile...unbeknownst to me, my mom secured tix for the 2nd night (as a birthday present), through a contact at The Forum. Needless to say, those seats were A LOT better, 😆. R.I.P. Mom, you were the coolest!! I miss you. 💖 (she passed 5 years ago, today)

The singer of the group said, to the band, America was like Rio. (A beautiful woman) He said when you played in England "you paid the bills", when you made it in America "you had a successful life". This song was all about the band's attempt to become successful in America, to them, a dream because conquering America with their music meant conquering the world. They were indeed successful, and they made their music when all of the band members were in their early 20's. They were called the "fab 5", by their fans, and the second coming of the beattles by some rock critics.

This is seriously one of Duran Duran's signature pieces. As you have already read, you can not interpret Simon's lyrics literally. The bass notes that John laid down on this solidified him as one of the greatest bassists this planet has had the pleasure of hosting. You must watch the video, it epitomizes the 80's!Obviously, I am a fan and continue to be! They continue to tour and put out original music 40+ years later. They are Rock Hall inductees, which I was lucky enough to be in attendance to witness and are well deserving of this honor. Just wait to see what else they create! I can't believe, though, that you are just now discovering this gem! My kids grew up on DD along with the Beastie Boys, Run DMC, LL, Depeche Mode, The Cure, and others. Glad you finally found it though ❤.

Now this is what I call music. One of my favorite bands from the 80's. Please watch the music video. "Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand." The part where Simon sung "Cherry ice cream smile, I suppose it's very nice" had no meaning to me when I first heard it, and years later I was like oh! that's what he was talking about haha shoot. Clever euphemism. I do suggest "Electric Barbarella" "Too Much Information" and "Falling Down." Btw, I'm sad that the cherry line wasn't in this :(

I suppose. The title Rio was taken from the perennial Rio Carnival festival in Brazil. For Duran Duran, Rio represents a celebration, (as it is) and Rio is a metaphor for the United States. They are poetically celebrating & singing about the United States. The opening lyrics to Rio is actually about a waitress that Simon Le Bon found attractive & was admiring at a restaurant.

Late to party on this one, but as it's been said 50 times below, this song needs to be seen as well as heard. The video for this song is possibly the best video from the MTV era, and while there are many to make that claim, I doubt many could argue against RIO! If I could only pick one video to represent the 80's and what it represented in regards to music and videos, this would probably be my number 1. Duran Duran was also one of the first groups to take the medium of music videos seriously, and you can see that throughout their 80's videos. To this day, 40 years after the fact, I can't hear this song and not think of every scene from the video, as they are one in the same.
