My favorite all time track by ELO if I had to choose 1. Perfect lush smooth arrangement. Lyrics send you away to another place starting right away with " midnight on the water ". My friend and I used to have a basement band and we wrote and recorded our own songs. But we did a cover version of this song back on October 18, 1985. I tried to sing it in the way Jeff Lynne did. Because I was inspired by him. His voice, song craftmanship and overall knowledge of music.

Your reactions are so funny and when I think of the actual songs which I must hear on the radio or the actual songs in the charts, nothing can beat the songs from 60/70/80s... there were so much heart, feel and technique in this songs, no one can beat this today.

Jeff wrote this album in response to his father saying - 'the trouble with your tunes, they have no tune'... Jeff said in a interview 'I'll show him'... and yes his Dad's response was 'you made this for me didn't you - thanks, it's great'! Jeff was 27 when Eldorado was released in 1974!!! Love this album!

To be precise, Jeff wrote this song, "Can't Get It Out of My Head", in response to his father's criticism. Not the whole album. Yes, the album was born out of Jeff writing this song, but his response was really just the song.

Eldorado is pretty much a protoype of Time as a concept album. It needs to be listened all the way through. Please react to the rest of the album! You won't dissapointed.
@lhpl Жыл бұрын
And it's the second of three prototypes. The first was the Birthday Party with the Idle Race. And the third was, no, wait. Eldorado is the third prototype, as On The Third Day was the second. I'm not sure ANWR was one, but OOTB definitely is the fourth. If we count them as prototypes of Time that is. But then, Jeff does sing "Time after time it is the same old story", on _Time After Time_ from the CD and cassette releases of Secret Messages. (Which fits perfectly with the line "...Back to the story..." from _The Lady Who Said She Could Fly_ ...) Jeff has made one concept album, for sure. But he has made it many times.

"eldorado" is their 4th album but i like their 5th album "face the music" (1975) better, with "fire on high" and "poker." although i never owned it their 6th album, "a new world record" (1976) is full of some really good songs such as "do ya" and "rockaria!" their 7th album "out of the blue" (1977) is a double album master work. its one of the best r&r albums ever made.

NOTE TO EVERYONE: By all means, leave your comments here as usual about the musicality of the song. But given Tyler and Marisa will be discussing the lyrical meaning, please don't provide any spoilers here, as it will be more fun for them to take a whack at interpreting them without any help from the peanut gallery (that's us, for you young folks, lol). Sure, it's possible they've already taped the ELO After Show, and so they wouldn't get spoiled by anything written here. But just in case, save lyrical commentary for the After Show. *And keep your comments limited to the tracks they've listened to. Do NOT tell them how the story ends, or what the songs mean that they haven't listened to yet.* ps~I'm stoked you guys loved the song, and that it was right up Marisa's alley (I thought it would be). Jeff's father was not a huge fan of Jeff's early work, and challenged him to "write a memorable tune". Challenge accepted, Jeff sat down in the front room of his parents' house and wrote this song. Then around it, he built the entire concept album. Beautiful, haunting, I love it!

To me, paying scant attention to the Eldorado story doesn't really diminish the effect of the individual songs or the album as a whole. SPOILER TO NEW LISTENERS: This comment is for ELO fans who already own the album. So many interpretations for this concept album by ELO. The most popular view is also the saddest. It's about a man who is so bored and depressed with his life that he is only happy in his dream world. He eventually becomes so in love with his dream life that he decides to commit suicide thinking it's the only way he'll be able to live in his dreamworld forever and escape the sadness of his real life - thus the lyric "I found the key to the eternal dream" from the title track. But then the second popular view is that it is just an innocent story about dreams and nothing more. Just pure escapism. It really is up to the listener. But I tend to go with the more morbid theme. How about you? Feel free to share.
