@@Diovanlestat true. The lynch mobs of the deep south were beyond evil, and it is horrific that so many innocent African-American men, women, and children were their victims in the 20th Century, solely for the color of their skin. Billie Holiday's beautiful voice contrasts so extremely from the evil she sings of in that song.

Ella recorded a long series of albums where she sang some of the greatest songs of America's greatest songwriters. Collectively they're called "Ella Fitzgerald sings the Great American Songbook." Each album featured different songwriters: Ella Fitzgerald sings ...the Cole Porter Songbook; ...the Rogers and Hart Songbook; ...the Jerome Kern Songbook; ...the George and Ira Gershwin Songbook; etc. Many of the cuts from these albums can be found on youtube. Here's a search which will lead you to many of them: kzbin.info?search_query=ella+fitzgerald+songbook+albums

Best of the jazz world. Ella has some great clips of scatting in mid '60s. C-Jam Blues and Cottontail with Duke Ellington or Mack the Knife are must see for jazz fans. How did we get from those times to now, sad.

"Ella you doin' something to me right now!" She's been doing that to folks ever since she stepped onto the Apollo stage in 1934 as a more-or-less homeless 17 year old kid with a raggedy dress and a magical voice that, just a few years later, the whole country would be able to recognize instantly. When she and Sinatra finally had a chance to work together, he summed up the experience this way: "I try to work up to what she does. You know, try to pull myself up to that height, because I believe she is the greatest popular singer in the world."

Ella Fitzgerald was my first concert. On July 4th, 1984, a new outdoor concert venue in Cincinnati opened with a patriotic concert by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, with special guests Ella Fitzgerald and Neil Armstrong. My parents took our whole family to see it. I was only 10, so I had no idea who Ella Fitzgerald was and couldn’t have cared less. Now, I get to tell people that Ella Fitzgerald was my first concert! Now you hit my musical SuiteSpot… Ella was practically a street urchin when she entered a “live at the Apollo“ type contest. She intended to do some dancing but the people up before her were so good she got scared… Her sister told her to just sing something instead. She was so nervous to begin with that the crowd were laughing at her. She restarted twice and One of the other performers was later to say that “she shut the room up so completely that you could hear a rat piss in cotton”. Her voice was so Pitch Perfect 2 that her orchestra would tune their instruments to her rather than the violin… Now go and listen to her live version of “Mac the knife” recorded in Berlin when she got it completely wrong but improvised so brilliantly that the live version one a Grammy.
