I met Eminem a few years back. He was outside a food joint I was in LA. It was late at night. I couldn’t believe it was him. I looked twice and he looked and nodded his head at me. I said Oh shit, and said sorry man didn’t mean to bother you. To which he said how do you think you’re bothering me. I said, I just figured you were chillin. I ain’t gonna bother you about a pic with you I’m sure you get that all the time. And I started to walk off. He said yo, you know I would have rather you bothered me about an autograph and a selfie than do what you just did. I thought he was about to go into dick mode. But he said, people act like I’m some fucking untouchable unapproachable celebrity that doesn’t know what a normal life is. I said man I’m sorry I didn’t mean to act like that. If I remember correctly this song was a world record for most words in a rap song and it took like 2 or 3 years to be dethroned and the song that did it has like 4 times the repetition of words it’s just so sad in comparison. Top 5 (from a 52 year old white man that's been listing to this shit since 70's disco rap) 1. Chuck D (Public Enemy) - Spitting facts that are still relevant 30 years later 2. Sir Mix Alot - Don't sleep on him. Incredible flow. Nobody, absolutely nobody, put together songs that told a story, and carried a theme through the entire song, not just a verse, like he did. Get past the Baby Got Back popularity that hurt his cred, and put on Testarosa, Swap Meet Louie, Possie on Broadway, and let the bass carry you away. 3. Big Daddy Kane - It's said a lot that you're a Kane fan, or you're a Rakim fan. Me personally, I liked Big Daddy Kane's songs better. And come on, give Eric B. some love. Rakim didn't do it by himself. 4. DMX - Just raw, aggressive and uncensored. 5. Missy Elliot - Yeah, I said it! One of the move innovative rappers ever! Impeccable flow. Honestly, a bit tired of the should Em be in the top 5 because he's white. Beastie Boys were far more influential bringing rap to white audiences, because back then, race didn't come in to play with the genre of music. Hell, the term "Rap" comes from a Blonde song, and she was one of the whitest entertainers in history. Cultural thing yes, racial thing...absolutely not. The Beastie Boy's career spanned just as long as Em's, had just as many hits, but the Beastie Boys did it without a script. Everything they did was new, because back then, everything was new. I'm not taking anything away from Em. Album sales says it all, timespan of his career says it, his rapping ability has only improved over time. Lyrically, yeah, top 3 easy. But my playlist still has more 3rd Bass, Lincoln Park (I'll argue with anyone that debates rap can't have a rock music track...Body Count, *cough, P.E. featuring Anthrax, *cough, Beastie Boys, etc,.), and Beastie Boys songs then it does Eminem. I'll put him in the top 10. Rather listen to Busta Rhymes, Geto Boys, Naughty by Nature, but yes, I'll admit he has more great songs then any of those artists (groups).
