i like to describe this song as "empathy/compassion 101." not only is it a great song, but it's a good introduction to challenging the way we think about other people. love it.

I'm 47 years old, but I'm still 23 in my head. I live for music, past and present. Lyrics, beats, and real expression. Who can say that music hasn't saved them at some point? I love your reactions to songs I haven't heard in a minute, but bring me back to a time where they were constantly present in my life. Y'all rock.

This is a very deep song, I remember when it came out and even to this day it is still real. Like years back when I worked at a convenience store where there were a lot of homeless people around, the line that goes "god forbid you ever had to walk a mile in their shoes", well just walking a mile in their shoes in your thoughts is horrible. imagine actually living that. Some people give them money or buy them food, others ignore them or complain about them and ask you to call the cops because they shouldn't have to deal with people asking them a question when they come to the store. And it was crazy that people with money would steal more often than homeless people. I would buy this one homeless guy I got to know food and drinks a few times a week, he said it sucks when every day you have to ask strangers for money or have to go through dumpsters hoping you find something edible enough just to get by to the next day. I have many physical and mental issues myself, I have done so much dumb shit, it is amazing though how you feel when you help a fellow human being, in that moment you forget the pain, the problems, you both get that feeling that hope is not lost and it may be enough to help you keep going anticipating other moments like that.

My brother and I are complete opposites on this matter. He is of the opinion homeless people are all lazy drug addicts. I've tried so many times to tell him you have no idea what they have been through or what they're dealing with. You don't know what caused them to be on the street. While I'm sure there are a few like that I can honestly say the majority aren't. I actually sit down and talk with them and help every time I can afford it

I always liked this song because it's a cold slap in the face as to the reality of what exists in the real world. Most take life for granted and try to distance themselves from all that is happening and he is just warning everyone that you are only one wrong step from a different world. Glad you reacted to this. So few do.

I know the feeling. People labeled me as a gangster, when they never know why I had to be this way. This was during the crazy years in the 90s Sweden. High employment, recession and the rise of the nazi gangs. Even I look white, I'm a karelian. We'd different culture the other so called "normal white culture". I was knifed by an nazi when I was 12 years old. Then they found out who I was, so its was normal for me to hearing "Go home you f-ing tattare" Tattare is a racial slur against us. I always answer them back: "I'm already home". Things escalated out of control, then come the peace. But then comes rumors about me. "Don't hang with him, he is a gangster". They still talking stuff what happen over 30 years ago. 😔I'm not that person anymore. I've changed, we all do. So its hard to getting new friends, due the gossip in my neighborhood. I'm trying to move out from here, to get an fresh new start. Where I can be me. So this song I can related to.

Empathy. This song is about empathy. Something sorely lacking in our society. You can look down on someone. It's easy. But to walk a mile in their shoes? Most people lack the imagination or vocabulary to even mentally do so, let alone literally. Where it is usually depends on where you start. Another deep line.
