THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL was a fabulous showcase of then-current hits and talent. all performers had to play LIVE, no lip-syncing or pre-recorded tracks, so it was like seeing a concert every week. so this particular video by exile was the true live version. there is another which someone overdubs the recorded audio with the live performance. the original studio recording of this song is superior but i LOVE singer jimmy stokley's (long hair, purple jumpsuit) amazing showmanship. he's compelling - can't help but watch him lol - and the energy he brings. FANTASTIC. sadly jimmy passed away only about 8 years after this performance.

After several lineup changes, the band was re-launched as a country act that achieved additional success in the 1980s and '90s

There were two shows, Burt Sugarman's Midnight Special, and Don Kirschner's Rock Concert. These were nothing like American Bandstand or Soul Train which both came on Saturday morning where I lived. These were done on Friday and Saturday nights as I recall. It was a live musical performance of the best music out at that time, no genre other than popular radio music. You can hear it here kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5u3oKyfoZuEea8. The other minor hit was "The Part of Me That Needs You Most" made it to number 2 in South Africa an number 10 in New Zealand. BJ Thomas a Country Singer covered the song and made it to number 61. "Kiss You all over" was their only number 1 in the US on the Pop Charts. They did chart 10 other songs in Country Music. Also the band Alabama covered ""The Closer You Get" in 1983 and turned that into a number 1 Country Hit. Exile's JP Pennington and Mark Grey wrote the song in 1980 Exile did record it but it did not chart.

American Bandstand and Soul Train were on Saturday afternoons after a morning of cartoons. Midnight Special and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert were on Friday and Saturday Nights. Then the one thing that cemented TV sets in every bar in the country came on the scene - The Not Ready For Primetime Players on Saturday Night Live. Bars would empty out for 1 hour or so, and everyone would go home or over someones house to watch before returning to the bar until bar owners wised up and installed at least one TV so their patrons could watch SNL without leaving.

Starting with American Band Stand, Soul Train, and Midnight Special, and Saturday Night live, an hen many celebrities variety show would have a musical guest in the mix of other celebrities. Those were our music videos and our only opportunities to see celebrities perform, then of course someone got the brilliant idea to develop a network of just music videos. We all know the name.
