Although this song is very old, I was pleasantly surprised to see it pop up recently on all these Reaction Videos. I loved how they all close their eyes and get the sadness of this beautiful song. I literally get a lump in my throat hearing it again. How many songs do that ❓ A masterpiece composition , especially with the violin section. Wow.

Gordon Lightfoot passed on May 1st, 2023 at the age of 84 of natural causes. I regard this to be a true masterpiece of songwriting. The lyrics, the voice, the string arrangement, the guitar parts, all combine to present a perfect song. As a Canadian who grew up with Lightfoot's music, ( I'm 73, ) he was unique and so talented.

He wrote this song while having marital troubles. He said he felt like a ghost in his own house because his wife was basically ignoring him.

Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian legend & one of the best singer songwriters. He has had many hits through his long career such as "Early Morning Rain", "Steel Rail Blues", "Ribbon Of Darkness", "Sundown", "Carefree Highway", "Rainy Day People", "Canadian Railroad Trilogy", "Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" & many more. I saw him in concert once.

I've been told by several Marines that the correct term for one who has been discharged is "former", NEVER "ex-" so imma go by what they say. Besides, how do you differentiate between active duty and retired/discharged? Personally I think these are distinctions without a difference but out of massive respect I abide by their wishes.

@barbarae-b507
@barbarae-b507 Жыл бұрын
This song was written by Gord about his divorce from his first wife. As a Canadian, I have lived close to where he lived in Toronto for most of my life. He has always been my favourite folk music artist. Beautiful lyrics and music. I suggest you try Don Quixote, The Canadian Railway Trilogy,Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Sundown. He not well known in the US because he has spent most of his life in Canada and didn’t find the US very receptive when he first went, so he came home. If you stay in Canada, for the most part, the IS ignores you. He has toured all over the world.

66 year-old Canadian here. Gord's music has been (excuse the cliché) the soundtrack to my life; at least the earlier part of my life. He was the inspiration for my taking up guitar briefly. The only song I was ever able to play from start to finish was, "Pussy Willows Cattails." He was one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, Canadian musicians to truly capture our glorious country in song. His death hit me hard.

I like songs others have mentioned including "Carefree Highway", "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" and "Sundown." One that many others haven't heard is "Circle of Steel" which I'd describe as a sad Christmas song. Keep up the good work, so glad you appreciate Gordon Lightfoot!

National treasure here in Canada. In his 80s and still performing... This song's lyric was so vivid to me when it was new that I remember drawing a picture of the ghost in the castle. Along with Song For A Winter's Night, this remains my favourite Lightfoot song. I cannot recall, James, whether you have reacted to Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald; if not...do. Stunning storytelling about a real life maritime tragedy, and Gordon's song appeared only a few weeks afterward.

He is our Canadian Jonh Denver ! You need to listen to a few more songs of his if you think this song is deep you will be BLOWN away. He was underrated for sure, but not in Canada ❤❤❤

A great writer and singer. One of the few singer-songwriters who can really be called by the old word troubadour - his songs tell powerful stories and are like ballad poetry set to music. There's a wonderful video by Rick Beato breaking down how this song was recorded that is really worth watching. Try his song "Sundown" next. Peace and thoughts to the guy who wrote in to you about his wife.

You were so very kind to and thoughtful of that man who lost his wife. This song has always made me cry or want to at least,depending on how low I am feeling at the time. It truly is hauntingly beautiful and so very sad. So...side note story I heard about it...the song was to Gordon's wife when their marriage was ending. His daughter knew that and asked him to change the line "the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back" from "I" to "we" because she felt his way was more disrespectful to her mother, she wanted people to know that they BOTH lost feelings for each other. Gordon did perform it that way for his daughter for years. His way was better/more effective though.

Lightfoot is my favorite "singer-songwriter," nobody tells a story like him. However, this is not an appropriate song for a funeral of a significant other, IMO. This is about the end of his first marriage. It was written in '69 and release in '70. The demise of that marriage was seen often in his work until 1982. Great song, one of my favorite, but not a good tribute song for someone you love.

@@slabriprock5329 The song is beautiful, melodic, uses words like "love," so without listening closely or reading the lyrics, one would easily conclude it is a love song. She did see meaning that I didn't, mainly by adding meaning to it that wasn't there. Pretty obvious if one reads the lyrics.
