At least Mark Farner was born in 1948 - so he had to be at least 20, if not 21 in 1969 ;)

Mark Farner, the lead singer , and drummer Don Brewer were both born in Sept., 1948 and so were at least 20. The song is from their second album, released in Dec. 1969. So they were both probably 21. The bass player, Mel Schacher, was born in April, 1951so he was legitimately only 18. He'd joined Question Mark and the Mysterions at 16. Pretty good 'stach for 18.

My generation's music, this music, was, hands down, the best ever! This is raw, organic, REAL music. It's sad to see what most music has become. Every concert today is theatrics. Concerts in the 70s didn't need all that - it pulled you in and kept you in the zone. Like Stevie Ray Vaughn, you got to see their souls coming out of their instruments - beyond awesome!

When I first saw Grand Funk Railroad in 1971 I was only 14 and didn't know much about them. It was my first concert and I was blown away. The first time the drummer hit the bass drum I thought I'd been kicked in the chest it was so loud. I started looking all over the stage because I didn't understand who was making all the music. There were just the three men, Mark Farner, Mel Schacher and Don Brewer. They've been my favorite band from that day on to this day.

They were only 20-years-old! This was their first year together, too. Lead guitarist and singer Mark Farner was "relearning the guitar," which he hadn't played in a year-and-a-half. And he only learned how to play at age 15. And get a load of this: He's still performing! Don Brewer on drums also sang lead sometimes. Within three years, this garage band sold out Shea Stadium in seven days. It had taken the Beatles seven weeks to sell out a few years earlier! They were a shooting star, for sure, and broke up in 1976. The next year, Mark Farner woke up and wrote "I'm your Captain" during the height of Vietnam. Here's their legendary performance at Shea Stadium in 1971: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5DXZmyKpJyGpM0
