You should listen to the studio version, it is definitely a 4runner track, and also through the album in its entirety, American Beauty (1970). Some may disagree about whether it's their best album, but it has a great laidback vibe, and holds together from start to finish. If you're having a bad day, you just put this album on, and peace finds you.

“American Beauty” and “Workingman’s Dead” are the two masterful studio albums by the Dead and deserve to be listened to in their entirety. They took more care and attention with these two, crafting some of the most intricate and beautiful harmonies and adding to the great Americana songbook.
@NebulizerChi10 ай бұрын
You nailed it: the studio version of this is the spot (that entire American Beauty album, in fact, and the one released right before it called Workingman's Dead). The whole acoustic set that this closes is on here and is totally off the chain --it was Hallowe'en nite in NYC...

You’re correct, for this particular song. Hunter’s beautiful lyrics are the jewels in this tiara, and the studio version is easier to follow. For the opposite experience, compare the studio version of Sugar Magnolia, a nice, laid back tune, to the late ‘70’s live versions that rock the house. But that was the beauty of this band, each show would bring a new joy to behold. ✌️❤️🎶

Imagine it’s a beautiful, sunny 70 degree sunny day. You are near the carousel in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco dancing with a big group of barefoot, long haired friends. Everyone is laughing and singing, and joyful as hell. I went to San Francisco when I was 17, and this is what we did: go hear famous bands for free in the park. Life was golden for a moment.

Polo - great observation - although the magic of the Dead involves live music, this song is best appreciated in the studio version. There’s not an intense lasting solo. The harmonies and sound quality and mandolin are readily noticeable in the studio version. Good instincts. 10/31/80, Radio City Music Hall, NYC. "Let there be songs, to fill the air!" That lyric just about sums up the Grateful Dead philosophy. They allowed, and even aided, folks to tape their shows. Polo, you are correct that the studio version of "Ripple" is VERY good. The Dead released an official video for it a little over a year ago, that enhances the music, truly worth a look. I know the date of this show because I was "there", in spirit, I was in Boston at The Orpheum Theater, watching a live Closed Circuit broadcast, with a full concert sound system, and about 2500 other Dead Heads, on Halloween Night. Good Vibes all around

The Dead's complexity is often easily missed in concert recordings. Conversely, the relationship--the VIBE--is easier to miss in studio recordings. Go to the excellence of the studio "Ripple," but remember the vibe of the concert.

Love love love that you’re reacting to GD!!! I’m prob a rare dead head in that I did fall in love with the GD from listening to their studio versions first before I could even begin to enjoy the long drawn-out improvisations of their live masterpieces but also Jerry’s voice is so angelic to me on the studio cuts. Would love to see your reaction to the “official video” for Throwing Stones. Also Box of Rain is my fave but was rarely played live as lead vocal is bassist Phil Lesh and from my understanding he did not enjoy singing (lead) live. ✌🏻

There are a couple different issues going on with the live vs. studio situation. For the acoustic albums (American Beauty and Workingman's Dead, both released in 1970) I would say listen to the studio versions first, then the live versions. The problem when it comes to live versions is finding the best sounding live version, and the best sounding live version is almost NEVER one that has video to go with it. For many of the acoustic songs from American Beauty & Workingman's Dead, the best commercially available / regular issue LIVE versions are going to be from the live album you have reacted to before, called Reckoning, which has no video that I'm aware of. Having said that, my favorite LIVE version of the song Brokedown Palace is from the 1981 live electric album, titled simply 'Dead Set'. Btw, *Ripple* is a very special song to a lot of people, the lyrics are worth thinking about 👍 Enjoy!

Watching this I’m giggling at the comments. It’s so strange for dead fans to suggest the studio version of anything of theirs. Each time they play something you can pull something different from the song. They were the first band to actually allow and encourage fans to tape their concerts. Because of that we are lucky enough to have a vast library of shows from different decades. You can listen to changes in the band over those decades. It was the recording and trading of those concerts over the years that built them a following that really went against pretty much every rule in the music industries playbook. And we were the ones that really benefitted from their casual outlook on recording their music.
