This style was labeled "horror core" at the time. This song was basically 2 different groups Gravediggaz and Sunz Of Man.... Shabazz The Disciple(Sunz Of Man), Rzarector(GraveDiggaz), Frukwan The Gatekeeper(Gravediggaz), then Killah Priest (Sunz Of Man) Poetic The Grim Reaper didn't rap on this, and Prince Paul was the producer of the group. All Wu Tang affiliated

I was 14 when that album dropped those who heard it understood the creativeness and the depth and lyrics and creative root angle that Gravediggaz were actually coming from. That whole album was a classic and to me one of the songs that embodied where they were coming from was "Death Trap" and "The Night the Earth Cried". And also "Hidden Emotions" from their second album. The 2 musical producing geniuses of that group was Prince Paul aka The Undertaker and The RZA that give this whole album such a beautifully sampled distinct genre sound that can't be duplicated ever. Caucasian people in higher places saw out to eliminate this group and albums like this and the whole horror core genre because of the white guilt that they cant erase or forget. When you fully hear that whole album and see all the the visual official videos you will begin to see why and realize that The RZA/ Gravediggaz were somewhat under fire/ heavy criticism. This was no doubt one of the most dopest and creative artistic expressions through art and music period.

Excellent selection! That first album was a highly slept on classic! They actually originally formed in ‘91 BEFORE Wu Tang dropped. Prince Paul (The Undertaker) formed the group after parting ways as producer of De La Soul. He got together with RZA (The RZArector) in his Prince Rakeem days, Frukwan (The Gatekeeper) had just left Stetsaonic and MC Poetic (The Grym Reaper) who also had a prior record as part of Too Poetic. Each kinda had something to prove because of their prior history for one reason or the other. He shopped the demo for a year, and most labels passed (including Def Jam, who turned around afterwards and released another horrorcore record with Flatlinerz). Easy E wanted to sign them to Ruthless Records but offered a bad contract which Paul rejected. The other guys in the group got tired of waiting and started moving forward with other things. RZA releases Protect Ya Neck with Wu, Too Poetic gets a 9 to 5. After a year of shopping the demo, he finally got a deal with Gee Street Records. By the time they actually record and release the project, Wu is popping. This song was the lead single, the video was directed by Hype Williams…it was his first music video…he would go on to be a legend in his own right. Unfortunately, most of the mainstream outlets banned the video because of the lyrical content, even though the horrorcore style was used to “wake up the mentally dead”, according to RZA. Hip-Hop radio also wasn’t initially interested, some saying it was gimmicky. But thanks to local video outlets like Video Music Box in NYC, the record started gaining attention and became highly requested. Overall, the group had moderate success but, wasn’t considered a hit. But that first album was highly slept on and a genuine 💎, IMHO.

All those brothers also had deals with Tommy Boy Records that soured one way or another. Thats why one of the 360 Questions to ask a Gravedigga is, "Who...Killed Tommy's Boy?" And Too Poetic(R.I.P.) first group was called Brothers GRYM(which was him and his younger Brother). He had a solo deal with TommyBoy but they dropped him like RZA.

I love the second album, especially all that Wu Elementz production ooowee...but the first album is the best overall, 6 Feet Deep is the gem. The production is ridiculous, samples, drums, transitions, scratches and mixes are unbelievable. The Whole album has an otherworldly vibe, it feels 70s, 80s ,90s all at once. It's alot more going on then the second album. The second album is 🔥 tho...and everybody took their lyricism to a whole other level. The lines are heavy, great concepts too like Fairytales, Pit of Snakes, 12 Jewels, Repentance Day, Whats Going On, Nite the Earth Cried and Hidden Emotions.

One of my favorite tracks of all time, this entire album was fucking crazy. In the uk the album was titled something that i cant and wont say and had an extra track. The second album was also dope, Rza abandoned the group for the 3rd album Nightmare In A Minor and Too Poetic died shortly after the album was completed. Def one of there most haunting albums cus Too Poetiic was liiterally dying while making it, the track burn baby burn is him pissed bout getting cancer. Its a pretty legendary abum in that respect, some of poetics final verses, but the beats and production definitely werent on par with 1st 2 albums

Gravediggaz were a group started by producer Prince Paul. The concept of the group was that each rapper had somewhat failed careers in hip-hop and now they were to “revive” their careers from the grave. Before starting Wu-Tang, RZA was known as Prince Rakeem and had a failed solo career due to the label he was signed to (Tommy Boy) repackaging RZA by turning him into a pretty-boy ladies man rapper, which was something he didn’t want to do (check “Ooh We Love You Rakeem” by Prince Rakeem). Frukwan was a member of a group called Stetsasonic and Poetic was part of an underground duo called The Brothers Grym. So Prince Paul gathered them (around the same time RZA began working on/recording the first Wu-Tang album) and named the group Gravediggaz. For the album, Prince Paul became The Undertaker, RZA became The RZArector, Frukwan became The GateKeepa and Poetic became The GrymReaper. Most of the production on the 6 Feet Deep album was done by Prince Paul, with RZA co-producing “Diary Of A Madman” and fully producing “Graveyard Chamber” and “6 Feet Deep” (the song). The album features Wu-Tang affiliated rappers Scientific Shabazz a.k.a. Shabazz The Disciple (on “Diary Of A Madman” and “Graveyard Chamber”), Killah Priest (on “Diary Of A Madman” and “Graveyard Chamber”) and Dreddy Krugger (on “Graveyard Chamber”). The group was categorized as “Horror core” rap and it was supposed to be a one-time concept album by Prince Paul but in 1997 (with Prince Paul’s blessing) RZA took over leadership of the group and released the second Gravediggaz album (The Pick, The Sickel, and the Shovel). This time, the group were official Wu-Tang affiliates and the second album has a more serious tone with a Wu-Tang sound to it due to the fact that the Wu Elements (Wu-Tang’s production team of RZA, 4th Disciple, True Master and Goldfingaz) produced the entire album. The album featured Shabazz The Disciple, Killah Priest (member of Wu affiliated group Sunz Of Man), Hell Razah (member of Wu affiliated group Sunz Of Man), 9th Prince (RZA’s little brother and member of Wu affiliated group KillArmy), Omen, and Wu vocalist Blue Raspberry. In 1999 Gravediggaz member Poetic/GrymReaper was diagnosed with colon cancer and was given only a few months to live. But miraculously he survived a couple more years and in that time he recorded the third and so far last Gravediggaz album with Frukwan, called Nightmare In A-Minor. Poetic/GrymReaper passed away in 2001 (R.I.P.).

Thanks for adding the real history, crediting Prince Paul. I gave a shorter version just now before I read your comment. People see the RZA’s name and assume he was the man behind the Gravediggaz, but it was really Prince Paul’s project. TBH the first album doesn’t even sound like RZA’s production style. The second album is more his speed, and it isn’t as good. Prince Paul’s beats are less leaden, there’s more humour, and the music is jazzier with more light and shade. I much prefer it.

Actually, 'Gravediggaz' was DJ Prince Paul's project, because he was in a dark space in his career. When this released, he knew who he could reach out to that would be a good fit. I don't know the order of who was chosen, but Frukwan of Stetsasonic a group that Prince Paul produced, is part of the group, RZA of course, and Too Poetic makes up the quartet. Another dope song off this record is "Nowhere To Run, Nowhere to Hide"...I wore this cassette out when it released. Such a classic in its own right.

Just an FYI, this beat was originally on the Wu-Tang demo tape that RZA originally distributed to the labels and A&R's in the beginning, but he ended up eventually using it for the '6 feet deep' album. That demo tape can now be found with a search on KZbin, it has a different variation on Wu-Tang's "Bring Da Ruckus". Big up to you bro 👊🏻

RZA was actually in this group before Wu Tang. At the time he was Prince Rakim, changed his name to RZArecta, kept RZA as his name in Wu. 36 Chambers got released a couple months before the Diggaz first album and got play. The rest is history.

Verse 1 Shabazz from Sunz of man, verse 2 RZA verse 3 Killah Priest of Sunz of man, first four Frukwan da Gatekeeper. The original Gravediggaz was RZA from Wu-tang, Poetic the grym reaper, Frukwan da Gatekeeper from Stetsasonic and the producer Prince Paul, The Undertaker also originally from Stetsasonic and was the original producer from De La Soul. They are still putting out music, Poetic passed from cancer in '01 and the members has changed up a bit.

This group was actually formed by DJ Prince Paul who produced the 1st 3 De La Soul albums. He recruited fellow Stetsasonic member Frukwan who called himself the Gatekeeper, the late Too Poetic who called himself the Grym Reaper & obviously the RZArecta, while Paul called himself the Undertaker. Fun fact: This beat was supposed to be on 36 Chambers, but Paul took it from RZA and added the court skit throughout the song. 1st verse: Shabazz The Disciple, Sunz Of Man member in his commercially recorded debut. 2nd verse: RZArecta 3rd verse: Killah Priest, Sunz Of Man member in his commercially recorded debut. 4th verse: Frukwan AKA the Gatekeeper. If you wanna hear what the Grym Reaper could do on a record, listen to the Gravediggaz song BLOOD BROTHERS

RZA created the Gravediggaz back when he was on Tommy Boy before WuTang. They shelved the project until after the success of 36 chambers. Prince Paul did all the production (although it sounds like early WuTang).

That album was recorded at the same time than Method Man’s debut album « Tical », that’s why when you listen « Mr Sandman » from Method Man featuring the RZA, RZA raps with the same style that he has with Gravediggaz, like a horror style…
