Since so many singers passed their auditions, they needed this Judge's Cut round to trim the field. Each singer was required to sing a cappella, unless they also played a instrument. This round was not in front of an audience, only the Judges, who didn't give comments. Thanks for learning this song was co-written by Frank Sinatra, in 1951. This song was Billie Holiday's last hit, in 1958. Angelina's next performance on AGT was in the Semi-Finals. Best video and suggest listening to the Judges comments using the subtitles. You were absolutely correct about her timing probably matching the backing track of Billie Holiday's version. Someone took the official backing track & overlaid this performance & it was nearly a perfect match-up. I wonder how many adult vocalists could do that.

She definitely has the orchestra playing in her head. Someone put out a video with the backing track superimposed on to this video.. and the result is goosbump material. An almost perfect match both in pitch and (even more imposing) in tempo - all through this long, slow and difficult song. It's crazy good!

Great reaction as I expected. It is so easy to appreciate what she brings to the table. Even at 8 years old She was feeling the music not just singing. There is so much more to go! If you want to jump forward from an earlier to a later performance, my recommendation would be Unchained Melody. She did it at 9 years old and again at 11, then at 17 at the Nobel Peace Prize tribute. The 9-year-old one is interesting because it is part of an interview with Ann Lindmo on Norwegian TV. Angelina had just published her new book, Between two hearts, which is about why she sings barefoot. It is a short interview but very heartwarming, and then a separate video during the same event is the 9-year-old version of Unchained Melody. I would recommend doing the sequence of the three versions of the song. But the first one I would do is the interview and then the 9-year-old version of the song. You could do them all in one longer reaction, which would be great. Or, you could do the interview with the first version, and then the second and third versions in a separate reaction. Your choice of course!

The girl with a thousand voices-her next two songs on NGT are extraordinary. Her progress will stun you. Next is the 60’s song Bang, Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down). You’ll hear an entirely different Angelina, different genre, who can express melancholy so convincingly and beautifully. And her final song that won this talent show is hard to believe. Angelina sings Summertime. She’s 8 by then, but it’s a timeless performance that should be impossible for a child. She’s absolutely stunning- and singing authentically in another completely different genre.

Just look at how she was dressed vs. the other competitors! And, the look on their faces when they realized they were watching the top competition. Angelina was born on January 10, so she had progressed to the age of 8 here, in early 2014. This was a judge's cut, since too many competitors had passed the initial audition. There were no spoken words from the judges, but they made notes. In these early years, Angelina had practiced the songs of all the great jazz singers and emulated them. In the next 6 months or so, she progressed into putting fine touches on her covers, adding her own pronunciation, timing and emotion.

There were no comments, but in the longer version they do make the selection of the acts that go on to the semifinals. She sings it exactly like Billie Holiday, she also did a cameo performance of this song on the TV show Lillehammer, and she did a version on her album “It’s Magic” that she did with the Norwegian Military Band, which can still be found on the iTunes Jazz Album Chart!

If you follow Angelina in order at your current pace it will take you a couple of years to get to where she is now - and then you have more material to catch up from that point as Angelina continues to perform both covers and original music. My suggestion would be to do some reactions for every age time period then skip around with a mix of both younger and older performances.

Spot on Kev! I hadn't thought about it before you mentioned it, but you can indeed totally see the music/track playing in her mind! This is one of my favorite early recordings of her that we have. I find it unbelievable such a young child, a 7-year old girl, can produce such a low and beautifully dynamic voice with so much soul. With it being a capella, the rawness of her voice really hits me, and I often find myself weeping when I listen to this performance. Already, her vocals have markedly improved from her first audition. It's astounding, really. Looking forward to the next one! :)

Watch out which version you take: From "I'm a fool to want you" which in Norske Talenter AJ sings a capella; there is a shorter version because there are 54 seconds cut out. And these 54 seconds are so good - even with speaking in - but the good thing of this version is, that you can't hear that there is something missing: AJ hit exactly the notes even after nearly a minute... Fine reaction. Several vocal coaches have noted that her voice is an instrument. Nowhere is that more evident than those occasions when she drops the lyrics and just does voice. For me, the end of her performance of SMILE (excerpt from a movie soundtrack) and the end of her short performance of HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN are both magical. You owe it to yourself to hear the instrumental quality of her voice in these two instances, even if you don't react publicly to them. I've provided links below. Interesting that you mention it, the timing is actually not like in the original. She shortened the pauses between the lyrics, but so that the "beat" is always right. This is absulutely not a song that you sing a cappella in a competition. There are a few versions where fans put music under her singing, and they had to change the timing back. You can also hear there that she sings perfectly in the original pitch from start to finish.
