James and his Dad are both former British army officers, who have both seen active service. This is his Dad sitting with him. He was dying from stage 4 kidney failure. For an Army officer to openly show such raw emotion is so brave. He showed so much vulnerability doing this. Thankfully a donor was eventually found and James' Dad survived. James donated all proceeds of this song to a Veterans charity. Such respect for them both. ❤
@cherrylsagan63

The donor was a distant relative who happened to see the video on KZbin. He contacted the Blunt family and said he would give one of his kidneys if it was compatible. It was a perfect match and Col. Blunt is doing well, thank God and the distant relative.

Not only was Col. Blunt dying when this video was shot, he had donated one of his own kidneys already! What an amazing family. The line "I'm not your son you're not my father , we're just two grown men saying goodbye" was what James said to his father when he left for his first tour (when both of them knew James might be killed).

Other commenters have given you much of the lowdown. The Blounts - that's how it really should be spelt - are one of the oldest military families in England, going back to at least the fourteenth century. Both James and his father will have been brought up to the traditional English "stiff upper lip", which makes it all the more moving. James was a Captain in the British Army, playing quite an important part in the Kosovo Intervention about 1999.

We live in a world where people grieving a loss lose our. The man grieving feels he must be strong and hold his emotions in check. His wife may lean on him, draw strength from him, and not grieve so heavily herself. Now along comes a man revealing the hidden depths of our grieving. He can change world.. Men need not be the rock but instead reach out to woman and grieve with her. Woman need not avoid grief by leaning on man. We can begin the healing and strengthen our bonds by both allowing themselves to openly grieve. Thank you for this video.

This is a true story as his dad had stage 4 caner and James said if he cries,, keep the rolling the tape.. A real tear jerker! Lost both my parents 3 months apart, 9 years ago. Tuffest year of my life as my brother was out of state working. Thank God it was old age and they weren't in pain and they had a living trust made up and I was on everything financial ad we had made cremation arrangements all ready done 6 months before.

It's funny after my father died I started referring to him as "daddy" again (a word largely ruined by society lol) - but I think it was possibly because I reverted back to feeling like a child who missed their father. I don't imagine James' refers to his father as "daddy" in person (not judging if he does) - but I do love that he refers to him as daddy in the song. Makes me feel connected - even if it's just in my head lol

As someone who lost both their Mum and Dad to breast cancer, i can remember being at both my parents bedside in hospital and just always thinking they would get better. My mum was 1st and although we loved each other and i knew she knew that, we never said goodbye before it was too late for her to understand me. You always think its not going to get to this point and its always a difficult subject to broach. Similar with my dad, however when do you actually say to your father its ok to go. I heard this song today and I've listened to it ALOT. Its obviously stirs alot of emotion everytime I hear it. Its simply fantastic and strangely healing. Thanks James!

James didn’t want to sing this in a studio because he wanted it to be real, real emotions which we saw in his eyes…. I believe it was in one shot too. He’s back story is he was in the army and drove tanks they wouldn’t let him take he’s guitar inside so he had it strapped to the outside lol he’s father also served. Thankfully his dad is doing well now.

This song is about his dad,who was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure. With no donor available, his dad wasn't expected to live. After this video a distant cousin came forward, was a match and save Mr Blunt Sr. That's his dad in the final part of the song. Mr Blunt spent 2020 in isolation due to COVID so he wouldn't come in contact with anything that would have put his health at risk.
@foots-qt4pk
@foots-qt4pk 2 жыл бұрын
What really hit me about the story behind this song is that dad had donated a kidney in the past because he has a rare blood type. James wasn't a match when dad's remaining kidney began to fail. But, because of the song, their distant cousin became aware of the issue and got tested. So, in a beautiful way, by writing this song, James really did chase the monsters away.

This was a tribute to his very ill father who he thought he was going to lose. His condition had deteriorated dramatically and they believed he would die before a donor was found so this was James’ goodbye to his dad. It was done in one take, the emotion is absolutely real. His producers wanted to correct the few places where his voice cracked a little and James refused, wanting it to be authentic.

Both he and his father were British military officers, so they had problems expressing their feelings for each other. This song was his way of laying everything out there when he thought his dad's death was imminent. James Blunt is also very funny and may have prevented World War 3 when he was a captain in the British Army in Kosovo and was ordered to attack the Russian army. He refused the order, and a British General backed him up and told him to stand down. Check out the video for No Bravery for a look at his time in Kosovo. For a happy Blunt song, check out Stay the Night. It's a great song.

Brother, you aren’t human if this song doesn’t bring you to tears. This one destroyed me the first time I saw it. I still have my father, but lost my mom to cancer at 11 yo. I wish I had been old enough to find the words to tell her how I felt. This song hit me both as a son and parent to three kids knowing they will be facing this one day. One of the most authentic, vulnerable videos I have ever seen. The courage just to sit there and let your emotions flow for the world to experience, especially in our society where men are expected not to show emotion. Such mad respect for James Blunt. Incredible. Nice reaction, and thank you for sharing your story as well. I’m sure your willingness to share helps more people than you realize.
