Both James and his father are former officers in the British military (tank Commanders I believe). Everything about this remarkable video is absolutely real. No Auto-Tune and no rehearsals. This was recorded exactly as we see it and this was the first time James had sung the song to his dad. To be honest, I don't know how he managed to hold himself together as well as he did.

His father was a Colonel in the British Army. James was a Captain in a front line recon unit. When James went to serve in the Kosovo War, his father was saying goodbye not knowing if he'd be injured or killed. He said "let's just pretend you're not my son, I'm not your father, we're just two grown men saying goodbye". James was repeating it back to his dad now that the roles were reversed.

James and his father were both military men. James was actually a tank commander in the first gulf war. When he was being deployed, his father would say: "You're not my son, I'm not your father, we're just two grown men saying goodbye...". This song breaks me every time I hear it. The video was shot in one take, because James wanted the emotion to be raw and genuine. His father was diagnosed with grade 4 terminal kidney disease and this was written as a goodbye. In a positive irony, the song was so popular, it got the attention of a distant relative who turned out to be a match for a kidney donation and his dad is now doing great. His father spent 2020 in isolation, James has a very loving relationship with his father and says his father is his hero…

I always interpreted that phrase "I'm not your son, you're not my father, we're just 2 grown men saying goodbye" was his way of making saying goodbye easier - a little more removed than father and son. . . but I must say, most people that react to it see it more like you do - a father and son at odds. One thing that bothers the shite out of me is when the person/people who are supposed to be giving us an authentic reaction WHILE they are watching this video PAUSES IT THE MINUTE IT GETS TO THE POINT THAT THEY'RE showing their true reactions to the video! ESPECIALLY THE MEN! I've noticed, and particularly so with this song since I've probably watched at LEAST 100 or more of these reaction videos on the song alone they find the need to pause it in hopes that they can regroup or pull themselves together right when the song is making them emotional and they don't want to cry as a response to the video, so they pause it.....too often they pause it! But see the thing is, the lyrics actually get heavier as you are listening to it, SO IT'S DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU PAUSE it in hopes to stop yourself from showing too much emotion! This song will NOT ease up, if anything, the lyrics get even deeper. SO LEAVE IT BE AND SHOW US YOUR TRUE REACTION while you're watching it start to finish with zero interruptions. Because afterall, THAT is WHY it is called a REACTION video! So pausing it, even once, defeats the entire purpose of the video. YES, viewers want to know what/how you're feeling, BUT NOT WHILE WATCHING IT! ONLY AFTER you've watched the whole song. I KNOW I am not the only one who feels this way. MANY viewers want to see your reaction while listening and watching the video. No pausing to give your point of view, no pausing to break down the video, no pausing it to explain the video to us because, duh, WE ALREADY KNOW ABOUT THE VIDEO and it is WHY we are asking you to do a reaction to it. So just please watch it without interrupting it so that your viewers will see your TRUE reaction to it. I have only seen 2 out of the 100+ reaction videos of this song where the people didn't cry or at least tear up while watching it. 99% of them full-out cry (or tear up) during it. It's not a true reaction video if you're trying to control your emotions while watching it since that defeats the purpose of it being a reaction to it. I shouldn't even have to say this, because it should be an automatic understanding of why these are called REACTION VIDEOS. (FYI: IF you feel the need to reply or send me a message please make peace with the fact that I will never read it or even see it. I refuse to do the back and forth debate on my comments and I just don't want anyone wasting their time).✌❤

Is pausing the video not a reaction. That was a lot words to say nothing. (FYI. I would love to waste your time). If you do not have much time, no problem, just a small interaction will do.

very sorry for your loss. Losing a parent is so hard, I lost my mom and the grief overtakes you. With Blunt's video, his dad had stage 4 kidney failure and needed a donor. Blount Sr donated a kidney a few years ago and his remaining kidney was failing. After this video was posted a distant cousin was tested and a match. With the lockdown in 2020, Blount SR spent all of it in the hospital so that his new kidney wouldn't be compromised by any germs. As far as I've seen Senior is doing fine. All the emotion James put through this song is so real. When he wrote it, he knew he was going to lose his dad and the song was to help him say goodbye. Miracles happen sometimes. But you never know when the last time you saw someone could be the last time. Tell the ones you love, that you love them, and say it often.

The roles are reversed in this song. He reads him a story, folds his clothes and chases the monsters away. Parents always want to be strong in their children's eyes. This song is letting his dad know that it's okay.

When James and his dad filmed this, it was the very first time his dad heard it and James wanted the producer to leave the tears in because of its powerful message that resonates with so many of us. James’s dad had stage 4 kidney cancer and luckily a distant relative was a match and donated their kidney, thankfully James’s dad is in good health today but this song hits such a powerful cord.

His dad fell really poorly with stage 4 kidney disease he was dying at the time of this song but luckily they found a match so he’s seems to be doing well with the transplant. James is a brilliant singer he writes his own songs . Cool reaction 👍

That is James’s real dad and the first time his dad heard the song. His dad was dying from stage 4 kidney disease. He only had one kidney as he previously donated one . A match could not be found and he was not going to live long. When this video was released a distant cousin saw it and came forward and was a match . He donated a kidney and is doing well now. James and his dad both were military and not always easy to show their feelings. The song is more about the roles being reversed as he is now the one chasing the monsters away, reading the stories and the one doing the comforting. My dad was not in my life but I think this song can refer to anyone you are close to that you are losing or have already lost.

The lyrics "I'm not your son, you're not my father, we are two grown men saying good bye." Is about the handing over the "man of the house" title. That his father won't have to worry about passing, because now its the son's turn to protect the family.

the "2 friends..." thing.... I see it as father and son yeah, but now the son is a man in his mid 40's. By that point the Dad is more like a friend, sure he's still your father, but you understand him now more like a friend and your relationship moves more that way. In fact if you wind time even further forward. A son might even have to start caring for the dad as you perhaps would a child....man kinda depressing lol
