Janis was relatively unknown at this time. She was only about a year into her professional music career. But she blew everyone away with her rendition of Ball & Chain". Interesting Note: The lady watching Janis performing here at The Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 is Cass Elliott from the group "The Mamas & The Papas". Her mouth drops & she mouths “Wow" after a particularly strong vocal run from Janis.

Janis embodied the music. Just to know, I was able to be on the earth at the same time she was here comforts me. I loved her when I was 8 years old and love her to this very day. She was a a one of a kind artist. She is in the museum of my heart. No lights, no dancers just pure unadulterated music at the highest level. RIP Janis.

I'm 44 and was born almost 9 years to the day AFTER Janis took her last breath... from an early age, somewhere around 16 (circa 1996), I fell in love with this unbelievably gorgeous creature. I felt every note she bellowed soulfully. I lived through every vulnerable offering she gave of herself, every time she performed in front of a live audience or recorded in a closed studio. I related to her on so many levels-- the loneliness she felt, the approval she craved, and the love she longed for- journeyed across the country in search of- that eventually found her (though she wasn't ready for it when it, or rather, HE, first came into her life). The sadness she felt, even when she was in the middle of a crowd, was too much for one person to experience in a lifetime. Her light was beyond the brightest of her time. She was only here for a brief moment, brilliantly talented years before her time. She will forever be preserved among the greats- the ones who paved the way for later generations, blazing through our hearts and spiritually imprinting with our souls.

Almost a national debut performance for Joplin, she and 'Big Brother' hit it out if the park. Even Mama Cass couldn't keep her mouth shut.

They had already done their set earlier but the cameras weren't there yet. So... they actually had her & the band come back on to do this song. Going into the festival she was relatively unknown coming out she was the talk of the town so to speak. She blew them away!!!

Personally I know everybody goes crazy over this performance but in my opinion her best live performance was little girl blue live on the original Tom Jones Show❤❤❤ she also sang a duet with Tom called raise your hand which is fire❤❤❤ I watch a lot of reactions and I've been following you a long time but I don't remember if you've ever done a young Tom Jones song❤❤❤ sorry I'm high as a mother fucker just because and the other night when I heard that Bethlehem was canceling their Christmas celebrations due to the conflict in that area honestly it broke my heart because it's so symbolic😢😢😢😢😢 so what I did was put on my two Janis Joplin go to songs of work me Lord which was appropriate and little girl blue live on Tom Jones and it always makes me cry so I had a good cry but I am still sad about the situation in Bethlehem😢😢😢

This was the 1967 Monterrey Pop Festival. It was at this event that Janis got signed to her first recording contract. The legend Clive Davis signed her. The lady in the audience was Cass Eliot of the Mama's and Papa's who also played at this festival. Actually the line up was legendary. I wish that I could have been there but I was at the Navy boot camp at the time. Any how, besides Janis, and the Mama's and Papa's, the lineup also included Otis Redding, Jefferson Airplane, Canned Heat, The Who, Booker T and the MGs, The Byrds, Johnny Rivers, The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix and Simon and Garfunkel.

Summertime is my absolute favorite, especially the audio recording where they capture all those overtones in her voice perfectly harmonizing with herself through all the rasp. It's just mind-blowing. Plus it's a George Gershwin song and he wrote quality stuff. But they do they're absolutely own take on it that I love.

First off... Love you and your reactions !! as a side note. Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company (relative "Unknowns" from San Francisco) played the first day of Monterey, to rave reviews. The cinematographer, D.A. Pennebacker, was late to arrive and the first day was not recorded on film, so the promoters (this year the promoters were John and Michelle Phillips. "half" of the very popular group, "The Mama's and the Papa's". (That's why "Mama" Cass Elliot was featured in the recording) invited Janis back on the last day to perform "Ball & Chain" again, to be filmed. Her backing group feared Janis would be signed leaving them to fend for themselves. The promoters also informed a bunch of "record labels", that this sensational women was going to perform again on the last day, so about 8 record companies offered her a contract, and she signed with Clive Davis from Colombia Records, contingent that her band be signed with her. The rest, as they say... "Is history" !!

For your own amusement listen to the audio recording of this performance sometime. This is a great video and all but it also is limited. They cut all the guitar solos (the most obvious at the 3:18 mark of this video) and a lot of Janis scatting and being Janis. It's out there just a youtube search away.
