Jay, at 63, in the early 2000's, sang this song on a PBS oldies show, nailed that high note, putting on the audience that he wasn't sure of he could hit the note every time, and NAILED it everytime! Jay DID have singing lessons, his mother wanted him to sing opera, he wanted to sing pop, so he kind of combined them, and that was really cool! BTW to mention Autotune in the same sentence as if autotune is the standard to measure these great singer, is ridiculous. THEY ARE the auto tune with their God given talent that set the standard for real singing without autotune, worked hard at it.

Jay Black was born David Blatt in Astoria, Queens, New York. As a child he moved to the Brooklyn, NY neighborhood of Borough Park, where, at Temple Beth El, he sang in the choir of Cantor Moshe Koussevitsky. A Cantor is one who is trained in the style of an opera singer, who leads the congregation in the sabbath and high holiday services. Anyone who sings in the choir receives similar vocal training from the Cantor, so Jay Black had the training of a Cantor, which is why he was able to reach such high registers. I saw Jay Black, at the age of 70, at a concert in the year 2007, and he was still able to reach the same vocal registers as on the original recordings.

Rest in peace, Jay Black, November 2, 1938 - October 22, 2022. Jay was a former choir boy at Cantor Moshe Koussevitzky and later at Temple Beth-El in Borough Park, Brooklyn, NY. Another former choir boy and fine singer was David Bowie. Jay Black preferred to sing live. My mother and friends debated whether or not Jay was singing live. Just so perfect. Jay began using button down collar shirts to show people he was singing live. What a marvelous voice! What a gift it was growing up at that time to see all those great artists perform live.

This was a great band from the 60's-70's. The lead singer Jay Black had a very powerful voice. Some of their hits were "She Cried", "Come A Little Bit Closer", "Only In America" etc. In 1969, they recorded an album of their favorite oldies called "Sands Of Time", which included the hit "This Magic Moment" (The Drifters). They also had a hit with "Walkin' In The Rain" (The Ronettes).

Jay (David Blatt) was one of the greatest singers ever, yes he was classically trained. This was a masterpiece I agree, kudos to all involved, job well done. WALKING IN THE RAIN is another of my favorites, a cover by the Ronettes. This Magic Moment, Come a little bit Closer , very good also. I appreciate yr knowledge in music. I grew up in the 60s definitely my favorite decade for music.

an interesting note- Jay rewrote this song from the original "script', the record company and producer did not want to record this because they just didn't like it...... and it stayed in the "closet" for a long time until by chance happened and they recorded it.

I am glad that I have discovered you as a reactor just as you for Jay and The Americans! My favorite song from them is their cover of the Broadway hit "Some Enchanted Evening." I love singing along with Jay Black in this song. I was a soprano all through my choir days (4th grade to graduation) and I love belting those notes with him, haha. Now, I hope to do my own cover album someday and their version of "Some Enchanted Evening" might be on the short list! Plus, "South Pacific" was my Senior Class Play!

He has more than that one Jay was known simply into music industry as the"VOICE".They did great songs like "Come a Little Bit Closer,Walking in the rain,Only in America, Let's lock the door and throw away the key and many more Considered by some as the Best Lead Male Vocalist of the Rock and Roll era He performed this song for PBS in 2001 and it's just as good I think probably even better. He brought the house down in 2011 PBS had him to come back to their studios and they recorded every song he ever done for a music library by him. In 2011 he holds one note for 40 seconds That was at the age of 73 sounded Jessica's good or better than the video you just played

Jay Traynor's vocal performance is no doubt one of the greatest ever.
@Oldiesmann3 ай бұрын
Jay Traynor didn't stick with the group very long. He sang on "She Cried" but left later in 1962 after the two followup singles failed to do very well. This was Jay Black (real name David Blatt), who replaced Traynor and sang on the rest of the band's hits.

Let's get another thing clear: AM Radio was all w ehad back then and they demanded to keep songs short for more advertising time...if your song went over 2 min 40 sec they didn't like it, would Not play your record. So all songs were tailored to that frame work for years. Then the Beatles showed up and slowly changed that, with others who followed. So when reactors say geethat song is so short, I laugh. Often the say they wanted to hear more...there's an old old show business saying..."Always leave them wanting more."

If you’d like to hear a beautiful example of what a human voice can do, check out Great Gig In The Sky (Pink Floyd) from the album Dark Side of the Moon (not live as it often takes 2 vocalists to handle it live). The album version was done in 2 takes. Just a heads up, if you do this one people will begin to encourage you to do the entire album in order.

What DIDN'T they have in the water in the 60s and 70s is probably a more accurate question. Idk. I was born towards the end of the 60s when they were smoking in hospitals and giving babies a little brandy or something to get them to sleep. If you survived the hospital stay for the first 7 days of your life, then you were ready for the world.😬😬

Auto tune and EDM “music” (so-called) has ruined - or at least suppressed - real talent! There are very few young, truly talented artists today who have resisted using it, thank goodness! To name some - Angelina Jordan, Dimash Kudaibergen, Lucy Thomas, Amira Willighagen, Laura Bretan, & Aurora. These, among some others, are the young newcomers worth listening to!
