Jay Black AKA David Blatt is unbelievable. Grew up listening to him, still don’t know how he breathes while he’s singing. He holds those notes forever!

Jay Black was a trained classical singer, such a beautiful voice. One of the greatest singers ever! He did a fantastic cover of Walking in the Rain by the Shirelles. Plus other great songs. Sadly he passed last October. RIP Jay!

Jay was trained as a (Jewish) cantor, exactly the same training as an opera singer. Exercises are done to strengthen the voice, hold the breath longer, and so on, to hold notes longer, training to see where to breathe so the breath does not run out, languages, recognition of written notes, so singing can come off a page and be note perfect, with perfect pitch.

I now listened til the end. Cara Mia, by "Jay & The Americans" is an iconic song, and group, for all of us, NY'ers. Since yer an LA girl, I will help you know a bit more, with all do respect. Jay Black passed last year, in Brooklyn, NY. So many people miss him. Jay & the Americans played live, at the Helmsley Palace, in NYC, for John Gotti Jr wedding. It was a huge party, not unlike the bonanno-profacci wedding, of August 18, 1956, which, at the time was the biggest party on earth, also in NYC. 3000 guests. BONANNO-Profacci wedding may have been the inspiration for Gotti Jr wedding. By FAR, the main attraction was Jay Black, and the Americans. RIP JAY BLACK! The Voice!

They were still touring a few years back, saw them at the state fair here, were pretty good (with Jay #3, who sounded like Jay #1), the two original members told a story about how they met / helped get Donald Fagen and Walter Becker (Steely Dan) connected with the music industry, and played "Reelin' In The Years".

Great reaction! In the time of doo-wop (another favorite genre of mine) there was also some guys who could really sing. Jay Black was one of them, with his nickname "The Voice". This was a great song, with, as he called it "The Note". Saw him perform a couple times in his later years and he could still bang it out while others had started to show their age. A great story teller as well. Thanks for posting this, keep 'em coming!

I think you have Jay Black (singer) confused with Jay North (actor).
@davidpanetta64007 ай бұрын
Jay Black was a grown man when Dennis The Menace was on tv. The kid who played Dennis Mitchell on Dennis The Menace was Jay North. His career ended in the early 70s. The only child stars who had a long career was Jackie Cooper, Robert Blake, Jodie Foster, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jackie Coogan, and Dean Stockwell who recently passed away. Jackie Coogan was a child star whose parents "stole" all his money. His lawyer sued his parents and, it was then, when the Coogan Law went into effect. The parents of any child star are only allowed a certain percentage of their child's earnings.

You think was good here? He was. But he was extraordinary singing this song in 2011 at age 72 on a PBS special. In the 1960s Frank Sinatra told him something to the effect "Great song kid, but you'll be expected to do it throughout your career. Whadda ya gonna do when your up in years?" By the way, when singing you'll notice his clear diction. But his speaking voice is like a N.Y. gangster. N.Y. is where he's from. No offence to New Yorkers. You're too young to know this, but Jim Nabors had a distinctive voice as Gomer Pyle. But when he sang, wow what a transformation!
