This song lyric/poem was written by humorist Shel Silverstein. Johnny did a great job with it. This performance was a big hit record. The prisoners at San Quentin seemed to get a real kick out of it. Notice that San Quentin (like most U.S. prisons) was segregated -- thus the all-white audience.

I don’t know how, but the video you’re watching has jumped a verse in the song. After the first verse, that ends “he went and named me Sue”, the next (2nd) verse should be: “Well, he must have thought it was quite a joke and it got a lot of laughs from a’ lots of folks… Seems I had to fight my whole life through. Some gal would giggle and I’d get red And some guy’d laugh and I’d bust his head, I tell ya life ain’t easy for A Boy Named Sue”.

Back in the day, story telling was huge…and if you could play guitar and sing your story…well, you were on your way to great things. People loved a good story and if you could make them laugh as well, you had it made! Johnny was an entertainer, who was well known Before t.v. Times were simpler then, his audiences were listening to radio in the country, in prisons, they could relate to or had lived his stories. He performed through al mediums, live, radio, television, movies, talk shows then videos, during all the years between. And always being the class act he was. RIP John, we miss you! ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

Great storytelling!!! The images appear in the mind as if watching a movie, ya know? It was a very big deal for him to perform at San Quinton and Cash worked hard to make it a reality. Another wonderful live and younger one of his was The Man In Black which he performed at a college during the Vietnam War era. I truly believe that you would appreciate it! My Momma introduced me to his music when I was young. I love all styles of music but I must admit that I'm a bit picky when it comes to country because I have such respect for the older ones, Cash, Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn to name a few. Pure! From the heart ❤ Thank you so much for sharing young man! 😽💋🎶

This song was actually a poem written by Sid Silverstein, which Johnny Cash put to music. Sid Silverstein is a famous American poet who wrote goofy poems, who passed in 1999. Johnny Cash songs usually tell a story--silly, or sad, or deep, or thought provoking.
