The original is about heroin addiction. I think Johnny's cover is about thinking back on his life and how it has changed over time, including his own addictions and regrets. This was made not long before his wife's death (she's the lady in the video). He passed not long after her.

And Cash had a big drug/alcohol addiction himself so it makes it even more powerful

For me, this video embodies the power of legacy. All the flashbacks were of him in his younger years, cataloguing his progress to very nearly the end. All the good, all the bad - it’s all reflected in where we end up. Peace …

This song was originally written & performed by "Nine Inch Nails". It was written about drugs & depression. But Johnny Cash's version is considered the best. His version is more about regret for past mistakes in life & realizing material things & fame mean nothing in the end. When the video was filmed in February 2003, Cash was 71 years old & had serious health problems. His frailty is clearly evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12 & his wife, June Carter Cash, who is shown gazing at her husband in two sequences of the video, had died on May 15 of the same year.

To me the song is about Johnny's regrets. He sees his younger self as a totally different person.

@@autumnpalmer4468 Johnny sang *this* version, and what he absolutely wasn't doing was singing about Trent Reznor's addiction. This version has everything to do with Johnny Cash.

Trent wrote this song about addiction and it was good but the incomparable Johnny cash took it to a different level and trent said the song was his now. Johnny died not long after this video, and he admitted to I think his daughter before this was his goodbye. This was about a man at the end of his life, looking back at his long career since the 50s, multiple awards and platinum records, but also drug addiction and using up ppl and changing who he was to fit the image his labels and public wanted and losing himself. The line at the end if wishing he could start over and keep himself. Meaning keep true to Who he was, A country boy. It struck a chord because we all have to face death someday and everyone does go away because that final journey we have to go alone. So don't burn why your bridges or sell your soul but be true to who you are. Fame is fleeting but you can't put a price on integrity and your soul.

Everyone can connect with this song because we’ve all experienced pain and loss and regret in our lives and Johnny can put it in words better than anyone. It doesn’t matter how much stuff you have at the end of your life especially when you’re old and your friends and family have died and you’re sick, none of that stuff makes you feel good. Only your relationships with your friends family and God is important at that point.

I love that this was a Nine Inch Nails song, but it is so perfect for Cash that even the writer considers it his now.

Rick Rubin produced this track. He suggested the song to Cash as a possible song to cover, and Cash didn’t respond the first time. So Rubin suggested it again because he really thought the lyrics were great for Cash to cover. Also noteworthy from a production standpoint is how the music distorts towards the end as the piano keeps striking to create a powerful feeling that you’re being overpowered by the sound.

I know it’s a Nine Inch Nail song, but after this, it became Johnny’s. I remember when the video came out and my husband and I balled our eye out, we love him. Country literally kicked him out, because no one would work with him so he went to Ruben in LA and made great albums (including this), for the last years of his life.

I like the original just fine, but Johnny makes this one his OWN! I think Herr REznor would probably agree... You should for sure do more of Cash's stuff... I recommend "The man in black", a live clip from '71.... it explains a lot.... Danke Almost at 6 g subs, keep them coming, mein Freund

The absolutely most emotional song in country is The Father My Son and The Holy Ghose-watch the opry live version of you can, Craig wrote the song after his 19 year old son drowned in a tubing accident. You cannot sing a song with emotion like he has in it and it not be true, no other singer could ever show that much emotion
