To all that commented on my comment, I did cut things a bit short by mentioning just "Blue". With Joni were do you start and where end when defining her creative genius? For the record in my humble opinion Clouds and Ladies of the Canyon are also masterpieces. However, I believe in "Blue", Joni opened up so much she laid herself bare, the scars, the blemishes, the beauty all of it was laid wide open. I believe in "Blue" she shares more of herself than every before..

This song means more to be now at 63 years old than it did when I first heard it at 17 years old in the 70s. Then there's the movie Love Actually where Joni sings this in the movie at her older age with the deep raspy voice from year's of smoking and the song’s rousing embodiment of loss, heartbreak and reflection come crashing into the frame as Thompson delivers a devastating acting masterclass. This song is timeless ❤️ Brings me to tears everytime 😪

Her voice is VERY different now, and not just because of age, but also because she has spent a number of years recovering from a burst aneurysm in her brain. She had to learn how to speak, walk, and sing all over again. Joni started out in Saskatoon, Canada. The city is depicted on this album cover. The Red Lilly being the provincial flower. I went to the same high school that Joni did, although 30 years later. She stopped in one day, while I was in high school, met with some students. Dropped off an autographed photo of herself for the foyer. I had no clue who she was. Or the influence she has had. I kick myself every time I hear one of her songs that I didn’t get an autograph.

Probably one of the most profound songs ever written.. in it's structure and words, one can interpret their OWN life/situation, "hear" and "feel" it differently every time, and it fits every era and age! :D I absolutely LOVED this album and song when it came out, and it has had a life-long impact on me! :D (wasn't until much later that I learned how much of "life" Joni had indeed experienced prior to writing this landmark song! :D) I continue to LOVE this "young Joni" version, the hints of her Canadian pronunciations and guitar playing! :D But for sheer mind-blowing EMOTION of this song, check out Joni's LIVE performance of it at the Newport Folk Festival July 2022, that event her first time singing in public since before her nearly-fatal brain aneurysm the spring of 2015. Seeing her whole "being" feeling and expressing every word of the lyrics, her vocal timing/delivery sublime, her then-78 year old voice lower in pitch but filled with the wisdom of a life deeply lived.. her eyes closed and head back... you REALLY need to see/hear that performance.. but be ready with tissues! :D (her LIVE performance at the Gorge June 10, 2023 is excellent as well.. but doesn't provide quite the same level/intensity of gut-punching/heart-wrenching and mind-blowing emotion as the Newport performance.. probably because that SURPRISE Newport show hit HER so strongly "in the feels", being the first time in front of an audience in so many years! :D) I agree Carole King is also a MASTER songwriter, piano player and singer, and she and Joni were living in the same neighborhood for a few years, and provided backing vocals on each other's albums at one point.. :D I wouldn't want to live in a world without EITHER of their music! :D (I'm not that familiar with Kate Bush, but liked what I've heard)

She did a remake of this song with a full orchestra. It’s beautiful.

There is a version where she sings this as as an older soul 50 years later. It hits different.

Listen to the later version she did with an orchestra background - used on "Love, Actually," heartbreaking beautiful.....

Her most recognized song is "Big Yellow Taxi" that peaked at #24 in 1970. "Counting Crows" covered Taxi and turned it into gold status peaking at #4 in 2002.

I remember Amy Grant covered it too. Hers was pretty good also.

Joni is a musical genius. Such a deep catalog. Her lyrics are poetry -- and often raw emotion. You guys like storytelling... try "The Last Time I Saw Richard"... "Carey" for some bopping fun... "River" for gorgeous melancholy (nobody does melancholy like Joni)... and "Blue" for sheer musical perfection. I could go on... She should have the next six months blocked out for Female Friday!

Joni Mitchell, one of the greats from the folk genre in the Woodstock era. Amber; you are a hippie, flower child at heart.

From The Kennedy Center website: "While Joni Mitchell’s early music is often categorized as “folk,” her sound draws as much from jazz, classical, and rock, and often encompasses bespoke tunings and song structures that defy categorization." Joni Mitchell herself has often shied away from the folk label and considers her interests and music more rooted in jazz.

One guitar a voice and a great song. We had rockin' stuff too, but we knew how to listen - no cell phones. That's all we needed back in the day, listening to our poets as we explored life together, as they expressed our shared experiences. We had no internet; this was our medium, how we communicated our experiences, hopes and dreams and aspirations. We still have music, but to old dude me it seems we've lost a lot. Sorry, for sounding like my father.

Thanks for this reaction from a fantastic female (Canadian, no less!) and it ain't even "Female Friday". Joni was in her early 20's when she wrote this, if I'm not mistaken. It's a song that hits differently at different stages in one's life. Jay and Amber, I'd be really curious to see your reactions to more of Joni's extensive catalog, especially when she moves into more experimental and jazzy sounds with albums like _Don Juan's Reckless Daughter_ , _Mingus_ , _Hejira_ , and _The Hissing of Summer Lawns_ . (Has Jay ever heard of the late Jaco Pastorius? He'll absolutely dig that guy's bass-playing on some of Joni's albums.)

Thank you! I've been requesting for months but I know how hard it must be to get to all the requests. Joni is definitely a poet. Right up there with Dylan.

How can anyone do it any better? And to realize she was so young when she wrote this song of wisdom. And then to watch her sing it again decades later as an old woman, when she's truly seen life from both sides of age, and as if the younger Joni wrote it for the older Joni to sing and complete towards the end of her life. I have no words...

Woohoo! Looking forward to this rabbit hole, and song. She groovy and smart and classy. Like y'all. Like most of her songs, it is poetic and pregnant with meaning. Life-changing songs. "Circle Game" is another classic that will cleaveth to your bones. With her music I would start with the lyrics, and then move to the music. She's as good as Bob Dylan in the poetry department, though he plays a better cowboy.

@@fayesouthall6604 Miles of Aisles live version is the one I know best. It is a timeless classic for all time, if ever there was one. "Times of Your Life" by Paul Anka was an earlier similar song on the cycles of life. Kodak used it well.
