My dad raised me on Judas Priest. I was 9 when I heard Painkiller on MTV Headbanger's Ball. Sometimes I think people should start with an easier Priest song (I think a few might exist), but then again might as well jump straight into it! Priest is that group you want to get into listening to. My favorite from them is "Some Heads Are Gonna Roll". Judas Priest are, as they say in one of their songs, METAL GODS! You will never be the same after their catalog.

Yes, this was early Judas Priest and this is a banger ! Always enjoy your reactions Staxx! Don’t know if you remember I am the one who kept asking you to do battery from Metallica from the 89 Seattle concert and you did that and I appreciate it now I would really like if you would do a reaction to Eddie Van Halen‘s eruption guitar solo from the 1986 live without Annette concert You will be pleasantly surprised and in aww of Eddie! NOT early Judas Priest this is Title track from their 12th studio release in 1990. Their first album was 1974. This is A LOT heavier than anything they did before this. Lead singer is now 72 and they still tour, last studio album was in 2016, their 19th.

Judas Priest was the single loudest concert I've ever attended. I mean we couldn't even speak to each other in the car on the way home. My ears were still ringing for like 3 days after. It was a really good show though. Probably their biggest mainstream hit (the 1 that got the most radio play) was "You've Got Another Thing Comin'". It's a little more 'chill' (by heavy metal standards) than "Painkiller".

Judas Priest in the 1970's were the first band to embrace the term 'heavy metal' for their music (Most bands did not like that term) ... They set the standards for metal music in the 70's and were ready to conquer the world by 1980 when their 6th album 'British Steel' finally went gold (half million copies) in the US... They had the dual lead guitar attack of Glenn Tipton (1st solo on 'Painkiller') and K.K. Downing (ending guitar solo) ... the piercing high vocals of Rob Halford... Bassist Ian Hill rounded out the band. Some more Priest songs to check out - 'Breaking the law'... "You've got another thing coming'... 'The Hellion/ Electric Eye'... 'Turbo lover' ... 'Freewheel burning' ... 'Living after midnight' ... 'Ram it down' ... 'Beyond the realms of death'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥 Priest's drummer since 1990 is Scott Travis (who played 'Painkiller') ...(the late) Dave Holland played drums from 1980 to 1989... Les Binks (drums) was in the band from 1977 to1979 and did their iconic live album in '79 - 'Unleashed in the East'. Besides the music Judas Priest delivered... they also had a huge impact on the image of metal bands. Singer Rob Halford is gay and wanted to express himself onstage... So, Halford visited an S&M shop in 1978 and started dressing in black leather outfits w/ metal studs... The other members of Priest loved the image and started dressing like him. Halford also started bringing a bullwhip onstage and would end Priest's concerts by riding a Harley motorbike onstage... In the 80's, most heavy metal bands copied Judas Priest's leather-and-studs image... Musically, Judas Priest made a huge impact and inspired metal bands like Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Sepultura, Pantera, Exodus, Metal Church, etc. Initially, Judas Priest was formed as a local rock band in Birmingham, England when K.K. Downing (guitar) and Ian Hill (bass) joined w/ Al Atkins (vocals) in 1971... Atkins left the band in 1973 and another local singer Rob Halford joined on vocals (his sister Sue Halford was dating bassist Ian Hill at the time)... Priest was signed in 1974 to a small UK label Gull Records and opted to add a second guitarist... Glenn Tipton (guitar) was asked to join in '74 and he was impressed w/ Judas Priest's potential... Tipton eventually became the band leader and key composer w/ K.K. Downing... However, their first 2 albums ('Rocka Rolla' in 1974 and 'Sad wings of destiny' in 1976) failed commercially... Priest had a more traditional 70's sound and image at the time. They were on the verge of breaking up by 1977 when an American label CBS Records offered them a contract and brought Judas Priest to tour the USA for the first time. Priest released a string of albums and toured constantly in Europe and N. America... they played Japan for the first time in 1979 and recorded a live album there -'Unleashed in the East'... In 1980, their big break came when their 6th album 'British Steel' went gold... w/ major hit singles - 'Breaking the law'... and 'Living after midnight'... Their 8th album in 1982 'Screaming for vengeance' sold platinum (1 million copies) in the US, making Judas Priest the biggest heavy metal band in the world for a brief while as they toured arenas worldwide and their 80's records were increasingly more aggressive than their early records. In 1989, Judas Priest were sued for allegedly inspiring a grisly double-s++cide in Nevada... the parents of 2 boys blamed Priest alleging that their 1978 cover song 'Better by you, better than me' had a subliminal message ('Do it') which caused the tragedy... In their 1990 trial, Judas Priest were able to prove that they never put that alleged 'command' in the song; that perception was purely accidental and were exonerated. Judas Priest released their angriest album 'Painkiller' in 1990 and toured into 1991. Unfortunately, vocalist Rob Halford announced in 1992 that he was leaving Judas Priest for a solo career... In 1997, Judas Priest returned w/ new vocalist Tim 'Ripper' Owens but the 2 albums recorded w/ him ('Jugulator' in 1997 and 'Demolition' in 2001) sold poorly... Rob Halford's solo career also failed commercially w/ his bands - Fight (1992 to 1995)... 2wo (1996 to 1998) and Halford (1999 to 2003) In 2004, Judas Priest reunited w/ Rob Halford on vocals and released their comeback album 'Angel of retribution' in 2005... But after their 2008 album 'Nostradamus'... founding guitarist K.K. Downing left Judas Priest in 2010 citing a rift w/ guitarist Glenn Tipton. In 2019, K.K. Downing formed the band K.K.'s Priest w/ vocalist Tim 'Ripper' Owens and has released 2 albums since. Richie Faulkner (guitar) replaced K.K. Downing in 2011 and made his debut on the 2014 album 'Redeemer of Souls'... followed by 'Firepower' in 2018... Glenn Tipton (guitar) announced in 2018 that he was retiring from touring due to his battle w/ Parkinson's disease; their producer Andy Sneap became their touring guitarist w/ Tipton still active in the studio. Judas Priest's latest album 'Invincible shield' was released in 2024.

This was my first Judas Priest song born in the 90's. Just picked the CD from my dad's shelf and that thought "oh that's a cool bike this knight has in the cover". That turned into confusion and indescribable awe in my 7 year old brains in less than 10 seconds. 20+ years later and the whole Painkiller album is still in daily play.

Laf this reaction just suddenly reminded me of one of my friends from summer camp back around the time this song came out-a Black girl who was teased mercilessly by the other Black kids at camp because she didn’t like hip hop or rap, and wore metal t-shirts instead! She was awesome; wish we could have kept in touch, but we lived too far apart, especially back in the day when long distance phone calls were expensive!

If you want to hear a stunning guitar solo that fuses melody and furious speed then try out Rock Bottom (live) by UFO from the album "Strangers in the Night". This album has been deemed by many as the greatest live rock album partly I would argue because it has so many cleverly melodic tracks e.g. "Back on the Street", "I'm a Loser" and especially "Love to Love".

Great reaction, been waiting for this one! Don't get me wrong, Priest has plenty killer tracks, but 'Painkiller' is the one that will blow you away. That's the nature of the reaction channel, I suppose - you sometimes get the best track first. I'm still recommending you check out black metal - not particularly because I think you'll like it, or it'll get a lot of views lol: but because it's a special direction that metal went, and I think it's valuable for people to hear it. It's my favourite genre anyway. Mayhem, Darkthrone, Emperor, and that's just for an intro. Bless Stax! Stay well brother
