In their pomp Led Zeppelin were a collection of 4 of the finest musicians in their fields of any generation. People will argue this point and it is only a widely held opinion. HOWEVER what made them the greatest band to grace this earth was that together they were soooo much more than the sum of their parts. Their innovative musicality is undeniable, no two of their songs are remotely alike yet you only need to hear a couple bars of a Zeppelin song to know it is them. I feel privileged to have enjoyed them since the beginning.

I don’t understand why so many people prefer their live over their studio. Yes, if you were lucky enough to see them live, that is an amazing experience. But their live stuff was never recorded as good as the studio stuff. A major part of what made Led Zepplin so great was the magic of Page as a producer. I have everything that has ever been produced on vinyl by Lee Zeppelin, and I do enjoy the live stuff, it just isn’t as technology good as the studio stuff.

Robert Plant, the singer, was so amazing in Led Zeppelin and his voice became the signature of their work. The guitarist is Jimmie Paige. He is arguably the best guitarist in rock. He changed so much in guitar in rock during his time with Zeppelin. Drummer John Bonham is the best drummer in rock ever. No one holds a candle to his work. He alone changed how drums were played and recorded. He brought the drums out from a weak background into the forefront and made people listen and respect the drums. He sadly died in 1980 from booze and Zeppelin broke up saying he could not be replaced and Zep was not the same without him.

So true! Easy to forget after a song like this, but he--like ALL of them--was marked by having exquisitely good TASTE. "What is and what should never be" leaps to mind as a "soft drumming" example of his. Oh, damn, i assumed u were talking about Bonham the drummer, lol! Right, Robert Plant, then! Same deal, of course. They were ALL so versatile and had SUCH great taste, the feel for phrasing, whether music or vocals. "That's the Way" is a superb Plant "soft" song.

I was lucky enough to see them live twice, the first time at the beginning of their career when they were promoting the first album. I have the poster for the 1969 Bath Blues Festival, that I went to on my wall, and they weren't even top of the bill (that honour went to Ten Years After). Welcome to THE rock gods! The second biggest group in music history, after The Beatles! All 4 members are leading candidates for the title of GOAT on their particular instrument/s! Their debut album went top 10 in the UK, the US and all over the World. All (8) of their subsequent studio albums went to number 1 in both the UK, the US and all over the World. The one exception being 'Led Zeppelin IV' which 'only' reached number 2 in the US. As that album stayed in the charts for years, becoming their biggest selling US album and one of the biggest selling albums, worldwide, of all-time, I don't think they were too bothered! Even their live double album went to number 1 all over the World! They were legendary live performers, so if you think the vocals, guitaring and drumming were great here, you haven't seen or heard anything yet! They were to the 1970s what The Beatles were to the 1960s. They wwere an album band who didn't really do singles. Their record company released a handful of singles in other countries but they never released a single in their home country of the UK, where they had more control. Their catalogue is huge and hardly contains a single bad song, with half being bona fide classics! They just produced masterpiece after masterpiece! Easily one of the most innovative bands in history, they covered many genres and were trailblazers in many areas. Their influence is vast , with possibly only the Beatles being more influential. They also happen to be the most sampled group of all-time, so you may have heard snippets of their music, without realising it. Although not heavy metal themselves and although they hate it when people mistakenly label them as metal, they are, together with Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, called the 'Godfathers of Heavy Metal', as they laid much of the foundations for metal and their influence on that emerging genre was vast! They're one of the genuine, true giants of popular music and they still outsell 99.9% of today's artists! To see another side of them, I recommend checking out their performance of 'Since I've Been Loving You', live at Madison Square Garden in 1973. It's one of the greatest live performances of all-time! Haha! This is great. I thought everybody knew this song and Robert Plant for sure. Growing up around New Orleans we had WRNO, The Rock of New Orleans and even though I was an '80's girl, they played Led Zeppelin so much that I knew EVERY song. I was too young to see Zeppelin before they broke up but I did see Robert Plant the summer of "88 in New Orleans. It was awesome.

GENUINE ADVICE: React to the ENTIRE discography, studio albums first, in chronological order. Then do the Live performances. You'll love it and get a lot of followers In fact, I just SUBBED in order to get more zeppelin. I do not recommend you just jump around doing tracks from different albums in non chronological order

They are immortal like Mozart and Beethoven . All four members contributed and equally made Led Zeppelin iconic with that patented sound . Yet your observation for the drumming is spot on . . John Bonham set the template for future hard rock drumming . Unfortunately John died in 1980 and as one fan said “ He took Led Zeppelin with him “ Yes he was irreplaceable . The surviving members Robert Plant , Jimmy Page , and John Paul Jones were set for life and they did well on their own with many projects .

The drummer, John Bonham, died in 1980, he still draws a worldwide crowd as people from all over the globe travel to his grave to pay their respects. His ashes are interred in a tiny and quiet churchyard in Worcestershire, near the family farm.

I saw them live in 1970. John's son, Jason Bonham, has followed in his father's footsteps and is an amazing drummer.

@@alecfed That must have been amazing! Yes, I've seen Jason perform, many years ago when he had a curly perm! He is very good but has massive shoes to fill. I live not too far from the Bonham estate and also Robert Plant, who I have seen out walking his dogs.

John Bonham was a force to be reckoned with on drums. When you listen to this on 🎧 the back and forth from left to right is amazing. I felt the same as you when the album came out.

As for being 'loaded', I don't think they were (until Page got a "Rain" problem later. See also "Just a Box of Rain" (Grateful Dead) and "Fixing a Hole" (Beatles)). It's just their natural states of mind to write and play like this. Amazing,.isn't it?

If you liked John Bonham's drumming here, you NEED to hear them do When The Levee Breaks -- their take on a late-1920s blues classic -- the original of which is also on KZbin.

John Bohnam the drummer for Led Zeppelin is a Rock drummer God and is up there with best like Ginger Baker, Keith Moon and Neal Peart “The Professor”. All gone to soon but not forgotten. All four of these men were superb drummers and if you like great drummers listen to all four of them. Though if I was to suggest one to listen to next it would be Neal Peart with his band mates Rush playing Tom Sawyer. Next I would suggest Keith Moon with The Who” in BaBa O’Reiley. Then Ginger Baker with Cream playing “Toad”.
